Interesting comments made by Coach G at the postgame interview. He indicated that this was the first week that Tyreek was reporting that he was pain free. As mentioned elsewhere Ty's summer training regimen given his injury may have been counterproductive per the coach. However, pain did not account for his performance issues today.
After giving a classy complimentary appraisal of Villanova, he reported somberly that we have regressed. He did not explain why but that he thinks a number of things account for this.

We have regressed.
Garland has so many flaws but at least he wants to score. What other guard on our team wants to score?
How many D-1 teams have this many guards that don't want to score the ball?
G needs to re-evaluate things.

Hate to say this but I'm more confused after watching that post game video. He actually gave faint praise to Zack for getting 5 rebounds. He averages 9. I love Steve but he had a terrible game. 2 points, 0 blocks and 3 turnovers. Not much of a defensive factor.
I thought that G praised our guys for all the hard work they put in during the same 8 months that Nova did? Nova got better and we regressed. G then clouds the situation by saying that each guard has a number of issues but won't say what they are. That's okay I think we know what they are. We figured it out after Manhattan game.
G needs to look at his team. Re-evaluate what he is trying to do both offensively and defensively. Maybe the dribble drive doesn't work with this group? We are being taken advantage of in this switching man to man defense?
11 Second half turnovers and ZERO assists.

"Regressed for multiple reasons" - G Time for a boatload of follow up questions about that statement. Those were not asked apparently.

Sam in a slump. DJ in a slump. Tyrone not running the offense efficiently. People pressed on Duren tonight and he wasn't having it.

Last year except for the loss to Cent Cont they started about better then anyone thought. Winning becomes infectious. Unfortunately losing is infectious as well. Again if you look at the stats for our guards last year and the year before as compared to this year you really come away scratching your head. The loss of Ramone was big but not this big as it relates to skills. I think he was the emotional heart and soul of this team and that is missing. Duren and Lewis being hurt does not help as I am sure it really limits their practice time.

I don't think anyone should feel any worse about this team than they did yesterday. They lost by 20 to the number 10 team in the nation. If we played number 10 today, but it was let's say UCLA instead of Villanova, I don't think anyone would have expected much today. I said at the beginning of the game thread I didn't really get any sense today would be a win, or all that close.
I'm still rather down on them, but today was what it was. They were outclassed. Like I said, I think the lack of games (which is bizarre by the way, can anyone remember a previous schedule with such huge gaps in games except for the week of finals?)is leading us to overreact to today. I'm more worried about how they looked in the first 9 games than how they looked today. If they went in to today 7-2 or so like we'd hoped, they exact same performance today would have been easier to swallow.

If they went in to today 7-2 or so like we'd hoped, they exact same performance today would have been easier to swallow. Exactly, this lose hit me like a ton of bricks today. I expected us play our best not necessarily win but at least play them tough. Since when do we turnover the ball like the way we did today. Our guards I just don't understand what there doing right now. Lewis, Peterson and Mills all had open looks today and didn't take the shot. Garland is that guy to drive to the basket, he shouldn't be shooting threes. He creates distractions when he drives to the basket allowing him to either dish it to wright or an open guard at the permitter. The offense should function better than it is. I honestly don't think our defense is that bad it is our offense. Nova averages 81 or 83 ppg, we held them to 73. It is frustrating to say the least. We should be using our speed and were not. If we get a good stop don't worry too much about setting it up drive to the damn basket if you feel the lane is open. Duren did that at least twice today. He could easily have drove to the basket after a turnover but instead retracted and tried to set up a play. We should be playing better, IMO. Perhaps something will change. We still have a lot of the season to go. Sometimes heroes don't rise until they hit rock bottom. Today, they have hit rock bottom. If we can go on a big winning streak until we play Temple that will be huge for us. I honestly can say my excitement for game day is dwindling FAST. I still have faith. LETS TURN THIS THING AROUND.

Duren's foot - great that he was "pain-free" this week, but he was noticeably slow...not sure I'm buying that. Or Duren is playing hesitant and taking it easy right now so that it doesn't flare up. Could just be a mental thing right now...hopefully, he is pain free and returns to form. be a shame to struggle so much his senior year after a really good 3 years prior. Lewis' hand - definitely affects his shot but I don't believe any of us really saw him as an offensive threat from the perimeter DJ slump - he's been in a "slump" since early last year...I'm not buying the slump excuse anymore. Garland definitely isn't the most efficient player, but he doesn't run the offense; that's Duren's job. Garland has struggled from the field but as Explorer88 said, he's really the only guard who WANTS to score.

Off a foot injury, you'd expect a guy to be both tentative and a bit out of shape, no?

MisterD - If Duren is pain-free, I'm not faulting him for being tentative. In fact, I'm not coming down on Duren at all. What I'm saying is that he looks noticeably slower (especially last night)...you can't deny that. Saying he's pain-free is kind of tough to believe though because an injury like that typically doesn't just go away after a week or two. If it did, great...but I don't believe that's entirely true in this case, that's all. What I'm hoping for is that this doesn't continue to hamper him because he's enjoyed a really good college career to this point and coming off a Sweet 16 appearance.

Since this is the first thread I am reading since Friday and watching the game am venting here. I have asked this question before, WHY are we not emphasizing and using the 3 point shot as the cornerstone of our offense anymore?? It was the foundation of our offense the last two years. Okay, I know we were 1 for 13 but the fact that we have not been making them is, it seems to me, a function of the fact that it seems to have been completely deemphasized in our offense. In light of the past success with it, why has G gone to the "go inside" style we are playing now. Why mess with success?? With the style we are playing now, I wonder if the current transfers would still have come? This team has been out of sync since game 1 and I think it has to do with this.

Mookie, I mentioned this elsewhere about personal experience, but if he has the fascia injury and not the condition faciitis, it can just go away. He could be out of shape from not running as much and tentative which would explain away the slowness without meaning he's still hurt. Not saying that's the case, but its not implausible at all.

I think we need to stop crying in our beer, fix what we can and move forward with the best coaching plan based on the talent we have today.
I have no problems with what G said post-game. Nova has higher level recruits across the board, have used superior strength and conditioning over the last year and had multiple height/speed strength mismatches against us. If they beat Kansas with Wiggins and company (and they have superior national talent) on a neutral court, why would we be surprised that we would get smoked at the Pavilion?

A few final thoughts. I think we should rest Duren until league play begins. Keep him on a bike, keep him in conditioning, but eliminate the pounding for this very difficult to treat plantar fascitis condition.
I'd play Lewis at point heavily against Penn, Miami and Wagner. If he is our primary 1 for next year, give him the time now. He's had injuries, but he seems to have the foot speed and athleticism. I think he just needs the time playing to get back in rhythm after the red shirt year. Give him the rock and go with it.
We need Lewis getting more minutes. We also need DJ getting less minutes. I love him for being a great glue guy, but honestly he should not be seeing more than 22 minutes a game. BTW, Nova goes 9 deep and we can go 8 deep and their main players averaged 22-24 minutes yesterday. Just saying.
I also think G needs to red-light Garland's 3s and make him slash and finish or take mid range shots off the dribble. He is not a shooter and should not be forcing 3s.

Like I said, I'm hoping he's able to bounce back and finish strong.

The team is shooting 28% from 3...when they shoot 3s, that's when teams go on big runs. With JW down low, the team should be utilizing him more and more but still be balanced. However, the guard play is not allowing for that...

Some questions: 1. Should Tyreek and Tyrone and all of the Explorers' players been under the supervision of the coaching staff via athletic trainers during the off-season? If so, shouldn't Duren have been shut down for a month in May when he was hurt? Isn't it the coaching staff that needs to monitor these guys? 2. Why haven't we seen marked improvement in outside shooting from Garland, DJP and Mills? 3. Why didn't G medically red-shirt Duren and activate Stukes at the start of the season? 4. What value do the assistant coaches add to the team? Why is Harris Adler still on the staff? 5. Did Ramon really bring that much to the team that our coaching staff is really lower division 1/high division 2 level?
Somehow Nova is where we expected to be.

FWIW: For the season last year we shot 37.7% in 3 point shooting. Excluding Galloway's shots the percentqage drops to 36.0%. Still think G started the year off with a strong desire to go inside more and this has hurt this team from day 1. (BTW:I don't see where disagreeing with a coach's philosophy should be considered "bashing".

Maybe I missed it and too lazy to look, but did someone say it's bashing if you're disagreeing with the coach's philosophy? Last season, this team hit the open 3...they were able to hit jumpers consistently. For whatever reason, they're just not hitting those open 3. By no means do I believe the team is as bad as the shooting numbers would suggest, but until they figure it out I do believe they need to rely on JW. I guess the questions are: * how do you get out of this season-long shooting slump? * do you shoot your way out of it and risk shooting yourself out of games? * do you reduce the number of 3s taken until the team is out of the slump? The answer all depends on your philosophy. If you think it's better to shoot yourself out of the funk then go for it. I don't think there's really a right or wrong answer...

Pretty soon the Jerrell option will dry up if we can't make shot from the perimeter. As I indicated earlier, teams will start smothering Jerrell because we have no outside threat. We have to hope our guards find the range and Tyreek can get healthier.

It's all Harris Adler's fault obviously.

I hear you but our guards could't even get the ball to him in the post when Nova pressured them on the perimeter. Our guards were completely overmatched by Nova. We won't see much better going forward. When we play teams not as good as Nova on the perimeter they will focus on doulbe teaming and triple teaming Jerrell until our guards make them pay for that. Not sure when and if that will come.

Last year they averaged 19.8 three point shots per game including Ramone and 14.8 excluding Ramone. The shooting percentages were 37.7% adn 35.3% respectively. This year they are at 16.9 shots per game but only averaging 27.8%. This was 29.5% before yesterdays 1-13. In the prior season the had 19.2 shots pre game. Duren at 47%, Mills at 42% and Petersen at 45% Go figure.
