Recruit harder. G Needs players who can win in this system. And players who can overcome any coaching deficiencies Offensive system needs to go. Every team we faced runs a better offense than we do. Tough to watch dribble-dribble-dribble stand around and then force a shot offense. If there ever was a season that illustrated bad offense, it's this one. Long scoring droughts.

As a La Salle fan of nearing 20 years, there is nothing unique about this teams ability to go into a drought. Hallmark of most every team I've ever known.

But let's not make players like Ramon out as if they grow on trees. He was a special kid, and that's why he was getting tons of media attention last March.

So do we just give G and the team a pass this year for all they accomplished last year? I cannot go back to another 8 years of under performance and bad coaching. Next year G will have two talented big men. This does not happen very often at LaSalle. This season is over. Let's see how G coaches and prepares them and the others for next season. If he takes JW out with two fouls then he really just doesn't get it. I remember when Lionel was here. He only came out when he needed a rest. We just cannot win with JW on the bench. PERIOD. I would also play Rohan a lot more. He needs the minutes and the experience.

Just watched my DVR'd first few minutes of the Hawks game. The first foul on JW was on a shot so bricked that neither Halil or Wright could time it. Unnecessary and incorrect foul called on JW - and it went out of bounds off of Jerrell anyway. Then JW gets a nice offensive rebound of a Zack miss. He takes it up with a non-called Halil foul, gets it back and takes it up again with 3 Hawk bodies all over him physically impeding him. No call. THIS IS WHEN G SHOULD HAVE TAKEN A TECHNICAL IMO. They go down to the other end of the court and RR drives too far under the basket with a foul called on JW with no actual foul - just JW doing a good job of holding his space. So these two calls and a non call actually determine the tone of the game in the first few minutes. If this happens again with no T taken by G to protect Jerrell, that means that he is accepting a bias against JW and we are headed for a sub .500 season.
( BTW I GUARANTEE that JW would have been whistled if he were in Halil's place on the first non-call & most certainly the second. As a matter of fact, the refs would have called two fouls on JW in the same sequence - lol, I guess).

I hate the concept that a bench technical is going to drastically change things. It pumps up your players, okay, but isn't going to change the zebras.
And good calls or bad calls, we've been on both sides of it. Every team in the A10 plays with the same slop, and there's no microscope focused solely on us.

Technical fouls when you're getting jobbed is one thing, but just taking one to protect a player will not work. Jerrell will always be picked on, and it is his style (brute force) that makes that true.

I have oftentimes seen games where higher profile coaches get on officials to "watch this or watch that" (often mentioned by broadcasters) - only to see a certain call made shortly thereafter. If G said anything after JW was hammered, it had ZERO effect. Maybe you guys are right and I'm wrong.

I think his style has changed some after last year, but I don't think he's ever been too shy from getting the in refs' ear just because he's not doing a Bob Knight impression. Think I'll be in the minority with that take, though.

Think I'll be in the minority with that take, though. Nope. I've noticed it as well, the problem is that he isn't "high-profile" and doesn't have the years of working the same refs that some other coaches have. Shaka Smart will always get the calls. Brad Stevens always got the calls. The refs know Martelli, he can get the calls. Giannini isn't at that level yet, and he might not be. It isn''t his fault, it is just my observation of how referees treat him.

I've watched the two JW followups after rebounding Zack's miss 4 times in slow motion. First, Jerrell hustled like hell to even get the rebound. As he's gathering himself to go up Halil is standing behind him with his arms extended over Jerrell and not straight up. When JW does go up, Halil hacks him on the elbow area. JW KEEPS HUSTLING FOR THE 2ND REBOUND, goes up again and Halil hacks him on the forearm. Halil's hands are NOWHERE NEAR THE BALL the whole sequence. Not to mention the other two Hawks crowding him as well.
This is NOT how great effort is rewarded. If it was Halil or Roberts, they'd have gone to the line. As Roberts did on a poor call on JW's second foul. JMHO.

Human element of the game. If we're splitting hairs over blown calls, you know there's something drastically wrong with the way we're playing. Good teams take the referees out of the game.

Good point but I have been saying for a long time the rule makers was biased towards guards. A guard can get a touch foul 25 feet from the basket and big guys get hammered under the basket. Another play that bothers me is when the offensive guy jumps into the defensive player on a drive or shot near the basket. Only once this year have I seen a ref call an offensive foul and that was not even in a La Salle game.

Only once this year have I seen a ref call an offensive foul and that was not even in a La Salle game. That's like the classic "desperation three with the shot clock expiring, no chance it'll drop, so I'll jump forward into the defender, do an arial version of the MC Hammer shuffle, and draw a total horseshit foul" play. Tyrone did it versus VCU. But we should know as well as anyone that good bigs are nowhere as valuable as good guards. Guards rule NCAA basketball, plain and simple.

So these two calls and a non call actually determine the tone of the game in the first few minutes. Exactly the point of my rant on the officiating in the game thread. The entire game was impacted by two horrendous calls and some non-calls on the other end in the first five minutes of the game. It is not splitting hairs. Kanecevic and Roberts combine to play 70 minutes, with at least 30 of them on the court together. Jerrell and Steve play a combined 51 minutes with roughly 18 minutes of them together. Those 12 minutes La Salle pretty much played 1 against 2 up front (sorry, Rohan tries, but he's no match for either of those two when they get the ball down low). Those were the 12 minutes when St Joe's went on 9-2 and 7-0 runs that allowed them to keep La Salle just enough at bay to hold on at the end.

Total superstitious gut talk here...I said it then and now, G should have let the boys watch the banner hanging at the Manhattan game. They earned it and would have reinforced confidence. Bad luck not to.

Are we going back to when every post is about how G is a nice guy and can't coach? There is enough games left that the anger and disappointment can just build and build. G had the students, fans, city, and even the country VERY interested in the program. Most of our games were on TV. We could not have laid a bigger egg. Just completely blew the chance to elevate our program. In fact we took a huge step backwards. Very sad.

Hey, I am as disappointed as anyone. But, saying that the season is a step backward is a bit strong. Certainly, this season does not advance the program, but the real test is next year. Any program can have a down year. A good program bounces back. We will have more depth next year. Hopefully, big senior seasons from Z and JW. Need offensive improvement from KL, RB and DJP. Will have scoring potential with Shuler, Price and Roberts, and AS should be a capable player. It is vital that we make the NIT next season and hopefully the Dance. It will depend on how soon the new players can mesh.Lets stay hopeful.Hell, I think we are going to win out the regular season and get to finals in Brooklyn and go to NIT this year. Lets Go Explorers.

Screamer. You are way more positive then me. I don't want to set myself up for more disappointment. This team is bad. I think JW took another step towards becoming dominant and Zack has improved. TD has been solid but it all drops off from there. I think G should come right out at the end of the season and say HE EXPECTS to get back to the post season next year. These kids follow his lead. We needs more talent to overcome our coaching deficiencies.

"Because I like our players personally and because we have so many players back, I'm shocked beyond words at the different type of team we've become," head coach Dr. John Giannini said.

Is that an actual G quote? Because if so, that's pretty much exactly my sentiment, although not one you'd like to have the Head Coach have to voice in late February.
Still, well said.

Is that an actual G quote? Sadly. Because if so, that's pretty much exactly my sentiment, although not one you'd like to have the Head Coach have to voice in late February. Kinda my reasoning for why I'm having a hard time criticizing Giannini too much. Last few post-game talks have confirmed that this team is uncoachable or not responding to what's being said. Pretty rough to hear him say it, but I'm taking it as a last ditch effort to get the team's ear by calling them out in a public venue.

Not sure why G has been so negative in public. Its either his way of trying to motivate or its because he is human, he is upset and has trouble keeping it in. If the former, its ill conceived and not working; if its the latter, he needs to work on his emotions and his public speaking during he off season. He was great in last years NCAA. Always said the right thing-even after Wichita State. He is bright and can do it.

It's not only G but Kale rips Garland on the SJU broadcast. Check out the archived broadcast from 1:57 to 1:59. He called him a "momentum killer", "the same guy","things haven't panned out for him the last two years at La Salle.", "can't score at will...(long pause)...but still trying too." Pretty rough stuff from a paid employee of the University.
Last night, Kale and Harris Adler pointed out Garland's two missed FT's and his missed amount at a steal which resulted in a Dayton basket. Yet nothing about the Dayton 20-4 run to end the first half.
Looks like the spin has begun for who is to blame for this season.

Blaming Garland would be a disgrace and I agree that will be the spin for this year. Would be nice to hear the captain say he is going down with the ship.
Still not sure what happened this year, very down

Blaming TG is wrong. Yes, he could have played better. But almost everybody could have played or coached better.(passes to TD3 and Z) I like Ty because he is passionate and he tries. Maybe he should have been used differently. But, please cannot get into the blame game. Last year we won as a team and this year we have struggled as a team. But still some things to play for-like to finish over.500 and win some games in Brooklyn.

That's really surprising if he's being singled out by people inside to program. If there's any "blame Garland", its pointing at fans who thought he could just step in for Galloway, not the kid himself for not being Galloway. That's pretty shitty, if accurate.

Do we go into next season with zero expectations? I know I was expecting a lot from this team this year. I thought NCAA's for sure. Everyone back except Ramon but plus Zack. Well this season is over. I was wrong. I guess we all were because even the people who knew we were going to have a drop off could not have predicted this mess of a season. So I guess my question is what is your expectation for next season? We are adding five new players but losing 3 starters.

So I guess my question is what is your expectation for next season? We are adding five new players but losing 3 starters. Well with just a few games left and us definitely not going anywhere this year, I'll talk about next year now. As far as expectations go, I think the ceiling next year would be .550 AT BEST. You have two freshman PG's coming into the program that are not named Duren. Although one of them has practiced with the team, we have no idea how he'll play as a starter. Big question marks at the most important position on the team. The other new players are unknown as well. Yes, two of them have college experience, but we don't know how they'll do next year. Do we have any consistent 3 point shooters next year? That's unknown. And for the team to play well, you'll need at least two shooters that can hit at a rate of 38% or better from 3. If we don't have that, we'll be similar to this year's team with less experience. Finally, there's also the issue of chemistry. Will the team mesh? Will everyone play unselfish? Will someone step up next year and lead the team? All are big unknowns and that's why I think .500 is the best we can hope for. Anything above that and I'll be very happy (and surprised). Honestly, I think it will be a few seasons before we're a top 5 team in the conference again.
