Hello everyone,
Well, here we are. It's been quite a unique offseason since the road ended that Thursday night in L.A. The school enjoyed a run of media attention, national prominence, and celebrity unlike anything we've seen in decades. (And we may actually be getting a new arena!)
But that's all over now, and as of Saturday, it's back to basketball. We had a huge uptick in registration during March Madness, but very few of those people stuck around. I'm thinking some may pop back up once games are actually being played though. Plus, we're likely to get some new posters just during the normal course of things.
Everything has functioned pretty smoothly here, but I had some thoughts/ideas/questions for everyone.
1. First and foremost, I am starting a new job this coming Monday, which requires me to commute about 2 hours each way daily for the time being, as well as working some nights and weekends. As such, I will probably not be available to do the Game Threads for every game. I will try to at least create them the morning of, or the night before, but may not be able to actively monitor and update them all. I do think they are an important part of the site, so I could definitely use help there. It is especially important to periodically post the time and score. This helps both people lurking who are unable to post, as well as for later viewing. If you missed the game, or were actually at the game, it's helpful to have those "signposts" knowing where you're at in the game on the thread. I usually do them at all Media Timeouts, and then more if it gets close. Something like "3:58 left in the 1st, 28-26 La Salle" is really all you need. As for titles, I always put "Game Thread: v./@ Opponent (MM/DD). Especially when we play a team more than once, it's helpful to have those designations in there for later viewing. IF YOU'RE WILLING TO HELP ME OUT ON THESE, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.
2. Obviously, we've been getting a lot more media coverage lately. The last month or so of the preseason, we created the "Media Links" weekly post to sort of streamline threads. Now that the season is started, most of the coverage will probably be tied to specific games, so I'm not sure how to proceed here. Keep the weekly threads? Or just post threads about games in the game threads, and create new threads for other articles? The main reason for the weekly threads was because every media outlet was doing some kind of preview, and it was getting to be a lot. With that all done with, I'm not sure that's all necessary. Would love some feedback from everyone.
3. With raised expectations comes raised levels of anxiety. I know every game counts, and we all expect a lot from this team, but this is a 4+ month season. We cannot get back to the Sweet 16 this weekend. Please, please, do not overreact. If we lose Saturday, analyzing how that changes the bracketology is probably not healthy. We are going to lose games this year, probably ones we "shouldn't." No one game ends a season.
We also have a tendency to post a million threads after losses. The toxic ones will be deleted immediately. I am also going to keep a tighter reign on the bad-mouthing of players, coaches, etc. "_______is garbage" is a thought that's OK to have, not to post. These are still 19 year old kids. Being upset after a loss is no excuse not to be respectful. Wait until you're composed enough to be articulate. But even the ones offering legitimate points, if it can reasonably go in the Game Thread, keep it in the Game Thread. Not a hard rule, just a suggestion.
I'll stop there, this is getting too long and rigid (TWSS). But I just want to make sure we all keep calm, and are ready for an awesome season, and keep this board running smoothly. THANKS!
