After the WC scrimmage, I said I was concerned about FT shooting, offensive boards/2nd chance points for the other team, and turnovers.
Today: - 11/20 FT shooting for 55% (has to get better) - Iona has 18 offensive rebounds for 16 2nd chance points - We had 18 turnovers, giving Iona 14 points off turnovers
Get FTs up to 70%, keep them off the glass, and cut the turnovers by a third and we win by double-digits in regulation. These things are fixable and need to be fixed by the time the conference season rolls around.

On flip side, Iona shot 30% overall and 20% beyond the arc.

Pitched a shutout in extra innings? Rivera like.

Pitched a shutout in extra innings? Rivera like. Both teams were something like 1 for 12 combined in OT. Add in free throws, and it's probably 1 for 25.

On flip side, Iona shot 30% overall and 20% beyond the arc. So outside of the two upperclassmen I mentioned previously, I thought everyone had a ton of defensive bounciness. Really liked the defense.

Impressive TEAM defensive effort. Good communication and accountability among the players.
HORRIBLE free throw shooting needs to improve.
Youth movement is underway and will lead to some inconsistencies this year but dividends pay out over the long term.
I liked the energy and enthusiasm, did not like the complacency they played with early in 2nd half.... which tends to come from youth. On the plus side, it’s good to show the young guys early that everyone they play is good.
Pleasantly surprised with Stone’s contribution, Hikim is going to be a major spark once he learns to make decisions, Kenney is legit but his FT shooting needs to improve - I’m a big fan of C. Ray game and like this nucleus in 4 years.
Not sure how impactful the lesson of blowing the 20 point lead is without losing the game but hopefully they saw the light early.
Should be a fun season.

Really nice win. I knew the halftime lead wasn’t going to last. Iona is a really nice team. They have a lot of new parts but I would be shocked if they do not win the MAAC. Our defense was really nice in the first half but Iona is traditionally one of the highest scoring teams in the country. The key was clamping down enough on defense — loved how they got back on transition and closed out when they could on threes.
Who is the frosh who missed the FT at the end of the game and two more in OT? He was completely gassed — Short rimmed all of those shots. First college game and one with a fast pace will do that to you.
I thought this game was a loss. Shocked it was a pick em spread wise. The young guns are going to be fun.

Also: 20 assists on 26 FGs is a coach’s dream stat. But 18 turnovers has to come down. But they pass the ball around a lot — just like Villanova.
Once the freshman and sophomores get more minutes together we will start to see some really fun offensive sets.

Had at least one or two blocked trying to drive down the lane. Welcome to D1 Hoops.

No one has mentioned the return of the Pep Band. They were small and were not loud, we still had a DJ, and it was still a recording of the fight song at the end and not the band playing, but they were there. Hopefully this, and winning, start an uptick in student involvement and excitement for the program.

The director, Chuck Hallahan, has started reaching out to band alumni but lost contact info for many from a few years ago. If you did not receive a message this week and would like to reconnect (or connect for the first time), his email is hallahanc@lasalle.edu.

Any update on injuries? Spencer turned his ankle at one point yesterday....it seemed pretty bad. And Diagne has been injured for a while.

Thanks for the correction 88. I watched the game on cable up here in CT. Spencer limped off so badly I mentally wrote him off for the rest of the game and didn't notice his return. I just watched Ash's presser and he commented that when Spencer hobbled off the court, he thought he would be out for 6 weeks. I had the same reaction.
