I think it would be a good thing for community relations, but one practical issue: I'm assuming the pool isn't exactly a safe pool for kids, there's not a "shallow" end or anything like you'd see in a public pool.

Villanova does this - charges $25 per year to residents of Radnor Township who want to use the pool or other facilities when they aren't in use by teams or University activities. It might not be practical to do it at La Salle though. www1.villanova.edu/villanova/unit/wildcard/radnor.htmlWhy is it up to La Salle though to provide a safe space for city residents to swim when the one close to campus was shut down due to violence? Don't peoples taxes pay for that already? Maybe the city should figure out what do to and not have someone leave it upon La Salle's facilities and staff to be a neighbor charity. Who pays for the increased upkeep and security needed on campus now for that? Let Temple do it...they are state-funded and not a private institution. Also...the article author is a La Salle alum, but the headline spells it "LaSalle". For that reason alone this shouldn't happen

Agreed. And it seems like a serious potential liability issue for the school. But I actually do like this type of thinking. I feel like schools should generally let people use their fields, courts, etc. There might be some extra upkeep required, but they're usually just sitting there vacant. Like you said, it would make the school more a part of the community.

If you're really well-off, and your neighbor doesn't have as much, and they want to use your lawn to play wiffle ball (we'll take the pool out of it for the moment due to safety issues), and you say No, just because "It's MINE!!!" then you're not shit.

It took me way too long to figure out how to attach that photo successfully. Damn this unreliable internet connection that one of my neighbors apparently pays for...

What if a tree branch falls on their head in my yard while I'm not there and they sue....or there is an electrical fire while they are watching my TV?

Do you let your neighbors SHARE YOUR SPOUSE??? If not, you can see why I don't think La Salle should consider allowing the local community more access to their facilities.

So is your stance on this that we shouldn't let the neighborhood use any of the school's facilities just because it's private property and legally we don't have to?
Even putting aside any larger socio-political aspects of it, it would just be a nice thing to do. I understand there could be some complicating factors to sort through, but you seem to just be opposed to it on spec.

I should point out that the specific issue that started all this, the pool, I understand there's a lot more going into that. You'd need lifeguards, probably needing to ensure swimming proficiency, and like I mentioned earlier, a collegiate pool is not the same thing as a community pool in terms of depth (and I'm pretty sure they keep those kinds of pools freezing cold too). But the larger point about facilities, especially outdoor ones, is a different one.

In today's litigious society? Heck, your kid needs a note for just about anything with school. Colleges can't even supervise their own. Give em a ticket to a basketball game!

But the larger point about facilities, especially outdoor ones, is a different one. The reality is, though, they need to charge for use (see Villanova earlier). When I ran a soccer club in Chester County about 10 years ago, we used to have to pay to use the township and school district fields for games and practices. We got a reduced rate as a non-profit, but still had to pay, despite most of the people involved with the club being taxpayers in that district. We also had to furnish proof of insurance as well. Now...I doubt they would kick kids of a field in a pick-up game or if someone is jogging on the track. But who is liable if there is an injury or something happens? Heck...Penn State let kids shower in the athletic facilities and look how that turned out

Considering that one of our own athletes sued the school in the recent past and the University settled for $7.5 Million, one can't be too careful about opening up their facilities to others just because they are vacant... He didn't sue the school because he was no longer capable of suing the school. La Salle "losing" there was a good thing.

Oh wow. Vogt was my home playground/pool growing up, with St. Josaphat's my grade school around the corner. I recall around 1996-97 the 610 WIP vs Philly Mob charity softball game at Vogt. Angelo Cataldi with a La Salle t-shirt on (think he was an adjunct Prof at this time at La Salle), Skinny Joey Merlino with a La Salle cap on. Which leads me to plug Nonno Ugo's on Frankford Ave as a hidden gem Italian bakery. And best wishes for a great La Salle MB season. I feel a 6 seed in the A-10s and it will only get better.
