St. Joe versus Penn at the Palestra this past week was a near sellout if that counts between two "middling teams". Noted. But I'm sure that stands as an outlier for both teams. The only Big 5 team with any significant and consistent ticket sales is Villanova, the rest is a crap shoot. And rivalries, Big 5 or not, matter alot less when the teams stink. I have to give SJU credit here, their alumns always show up at Hagan. Looks like every home game this year has been at least at 85% capacity and i've been to at least 1 non-conf game each year there against crap teams and its been pretty close to full each time. Agreed that ours, temple, penn and drexel support waivers substantially depending on record.

Going to a game at Hawk Hill is a much better night out than going to 20th & Olney.
Hawk Hill has Larry’s Steaks or Landmark Americana across the street to meet up with friends pre/post game. The game becomes more of a reason to get together than at La Salle.
Game day at La Salle is, Park, walk to game, go to game, go home.

Email Text below...
Dear Explorers,
I am writing today to address some inaccurate and speculative comments regarding our Athletics programs, which are circulating on social media.
Our strategic plan, Momentum 2022, is explicit that La Salle “will commit to establishing an Athletics program that is right-sized, a model of academic excellence for student-athletes who are students first, and that strengthens a proud La Salle tradition of winning and succeeding in NCAA regional and national competitions." To do this, the strategic plan calls for "a close examination of La Salle’s premier sports, Men’s and Women’s Division I Basketball, with a view to ensuring that our approach to these sports aligns with strategic priorities.”
To that end, the Board of Trustees established an Ad Hoc Committee on Athletics last fall, charging a broad-based group of faculty, staff, administrators, alumni and trustees with overseeing a comprehensive review of Athletics, assisted by Inter Collegiate Athletic Consulting. The Committee will prepare data-driven recommendations for the Board of Trustees to consider in late spring or early summer.
I cannot stress enough that we are at the earliest stage of this process. Absolutely no recommendations have been made - or will be made - at this stage.
We have a long and storied history of Athletics at La Salle, and that is not going to change. Our goal is to ensure that we position our programs for success, and deliver the best possible student experience, including athletes and non-athletes.
Explorers are Never Lost!
Sincerely,
Colleen
Colleen M. Hanycz, Ph.D. President

Sorry fellas but this email ain't cutting it for me. 1. What exactly is inaccurate and speculative? Same thing in response to Art Auction 2. Was the Ad Hoc Committee publicized before this email? 3. Of course our "long and storied history of Athletics at La Salle is not going to change" because history cannot be altered but what about our future? 4. 2.5 business days to get this out?

Sorry fellas but this email ain't cutting it for me. 1. What exactly is inaccurate and speculative? Same thing in response to Art Auction 2. Was the Ad Hoc Committee publicized before this email? 3. Of course our "long and storied history of Athletics at La Salle is not going to change" because history cannot be altered but what about our future? 4. 2.5 business days to get this out? Stop. Just please stop. The President continues to do a great job. La Salle like all organizations continually reviews where they are positioned. Should she send a press release out every time she and the others that run the place are thinking about something. You see why they don't? The only mistake occurred when someone involved in a focus group meeting spread "fake news". Honestly, she must get exhausted having to deal with some of our alumni. Are they figuring out what sports we should have and how we should be positioned and where we should spend our money? I hope they are. Please stop with the speculation on this topic. I can speak from my discussions with the President and the university board members that I have discussed the topic with, there is nothing but support for the men's basketball team. Spreading of false info just hurts the university. Re: the art auction, I see that as nothing but a smart decision on where to use our assets. Not everyone is going to like it but I am sure most people don't really give a hoot about the tiny percentage of the collection that is being sold. Sure if the paper quotes an art history prof or the head of an art museum association, I am confident I know what they'll say before even reading the article. Do members of this board really think we should keep those few pieces of art in the museum that nobody really uses or use the 5-7 mil for the betterment of our university and students? Why did she send something out on that? Because the paper was nice enough to print a one sided article without the full story. When you make real decisions, unfortunately there are always some that don't like them. That is why previous heads of the university often declined from making many decisions and why we stand where we do today. The strides this President has made in the short time she has been here are actually incredible. Most notably increasing enrollment and fundraising drastically and moving our financial position in the right direction. I can only hope we can keep her because those smart enough to see what she actually is doing from afar will surely come knocking. Only then should you be concerned.

I think brotherteliow asks a good question - What exactly is inaccurate?

The administration should be exploring multiple options. I hope one of the options is how to make us competitive while staying D1. If option 2 is we go D3 in everything except basketball then I hope LaSalle puts resources towards that to make it competitive. At this point I have become apathetic to LaSalle athletics. While I would want to stay D1 in everything I could live with downgrading everything but BBall IF the administration is going to put the necessary resources into it so we can compete in all phases.(facilities, recruiting etc..)

Let's stop talking like this is happening. It isn't. I have confirmation of that.

I agree the message is extremely vague. Especially if youre not in touch with La Salle athletics as most on this board are. A few classmates text'd into a group chat, that I'm on, indicating this. This is a bad look from our University and President.

What was the "fake news"? Did you speak with anyone in the faculty meeting last Friday who heard the presentation by ICA and could refute it? I think brotherteliow asks a good question - What exactly is inaccurate? Um, how about that little D3 rumor that grew pretty quickly? That same rumor that you mentioned the Inquirer's staff was following up on? Maybe that. Taking a wild stab at it, but our little place called Explorertown also has a member that runs a somewhat crappy Facebook page too - Restore our Tradition - or whatever. And it ended up there. And on Twitter. And on the A10 forum. In few hours, Explorertown turned the basketball program into a D3 MAAC-Patriot-Colonial team. We're lucky the media realized the story was dead on arrival. In short, we created a mess - call it what it is. We also have a right to do so also - no university affiliation - but let's not act like it didn't start right here. This was ground zero. So what was inaccurate? I can and have refuted the D3 rumor from the beginning - it was just so off-base & I knew it was going to incorrectly inflame our already dwindling and fragile fanbase. But I was effectively told I can't be right because La Salle must be wrong, can't be trusted, and must be up to no-good. Well, the D3 rumor was proved to be dead wrong, the University issued a statement, yet we're still hemming-and-hawing over details, including the D3 rumor that we just can't let die. Can't please everyone, even after a statement. And just because we have a right to speak freely doesn't mean we shouldn't try to respect our alma mater, at times, too. We might not be affiliated, but I don't think we want to burn that bridge, either. Until then, here's a recap in case we lose our spot: Step 1. Get butt-hurt over a D3 rumor. Step 2. Rumor gets squashed. Step 3. Complain about no statement. Step 4. Read statement. Step 5. Complain about the statement. Step 6. Start talking about D3 rumor again. Step 7. Pontificate about the injustice surrounding La Salle's decision to do things with publicly disclosing their every action to Explorertown.

I understand what you are saying BUT the statement was very vague and I read it as LaSalle will explore all options and do what’s best for LaSalle. It did not say the rumors are false and WE WILL BE STAYING D1.

Were you at the faculty meeting or did you talk to anyone at it where that was said? If you re-read the first post, I was stating what was said there and told to me my two people present. It may have been said in passing or cited as an option, but it was said. Fake news would've been saying it if it was never mentioned in the meeting. Everyone who's told me that was never said was not actually at the meeting, so I'm left with what two people I know were at the meeting heard. If it wasn't an option, the consultants shouldn't even have mentioned it, whether in passing or not, to the faculty, where people would walk out of the room thinking it's being considered and discussed.

On a positive note .... at least people still care enough to get upset at things? Someone might have said this already but I think it’s also a good thing the school brought in a firm to discuss athletics - shows they care and aren’t sitting idle.

You really think somebody from the board started Restore Our Tradition on Facebook? I'm sure there are members of both groups as I'm one of them, I know Hykos used to be... But saying that somebody here started it is a stretch no? Those guys think we are tame supporters of G, and the University thinks we are too harsh or negative. This board can't win. This is social media in today's world. This meeting was bound to get out. Even if the D3 thing was said in passing, the the dropping to a low major, or a low mid major is something that a few influencial people on the inside want, and some of you want it as well. THAT'S NOT A POSITIVE THING FOR OUR ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT. Look at all of the schools that have moved up conferences. Wichita State, Butler, VCU, Xavier, Utah, Temple, Davidson, Mason, Memphis, Creighton...every non power school that's made a Final Four in the last 20 years save Gonzaga has tried to improve their standing in the college basketball landscape... And these are teams that have already made it to the biggest stage in the sport. UConn won a National Title after moving down to the American, but the Big East football schools were basically forced to move to that conference. My point is that no matter how this is spun, sliced, or packaged, a conference move doesn't move us up the food chain, quite the opposite. This wasn't refuted by yesterday's email. While this issue should be put to bed or tabled for a couple of years, it isn't exactly erroneous either.

Those guys are knobs. I had a run in with them a few months ago during a kerfuffle on this board that I asked them politely not to amplify and they just attacked me and the board. So if the guy running that thing IS on this board- you're a knob.

That e-mail sounds like the same, old La Salle....pretty much saying "It's none of your business and we're going to do what we're going to do." No surprise. That's why we (the alumni) have the reputation of being apathetic. How much can we care when it seems we're regularly told to butt out?

How is that your takeaway? Both the fact that there even was an email and that it explicitly says "absolutely no recommendations have been made" is approaching the polar opposite of "none of your business".

Probably because you don't hire a consultant to assess a situation and say "here's the response we want to get from you"?

Nobody is saying that you request the response. What people don't want is for a hired consulting firm to spend any time/money looking into the possibility of dropping two divisions.

What if dropping two divisions is objectively the best thing for the university but not for the fraction that really care about basketball?

What if dropping two divisions is objectively the best thing for the university but not for the fraction that really care about basketball? This isn't an argument worth having. What about the 300+ D1 athletes at the school. Come on. What about all of the former athletes that don't want to see their histories moved down to that level.
