He was 2nd to only Michael Jackson in terms of talent, and he didn't have the skeletons in the closet that Michael had...

Prince and Bowie in the same year has reduced the total cool in America by like 40%. Terrible.

More talented musician than Michael. My favorite solo ever below:

Eric Clapton was once asked something to lines of "What's it like to best guitarist in the world?" His response was classic - "I don't know. Ask Prince."
Might not have actually been the best, but it shows you how much respect he earned from even the most talented of musicians.

Must have watched that solo 12 times today.
Supposedly, the back story to that solo is that he was just left out of Rolling Stone Mag's Top 100 Guitarists of All Time list, and this solo became his middle finger to that awful decision.
He somehow managed to pull enough strings to get in the Harrison tribute show, and rehearsed a very basic solo in comparison to the iconic one he actually played. Harrison's kid was floored, and Tom Petty who's probably the most chill musician of all time was even picking his jaw off the floor.
At the end, he threw the guitar up. I like to believe it's floating in space, circling the earth. And he walks off, not turning around, knowing his mark was made.
His Royal Badness was really, really bad.

Supposedly, the back story to that solo is that he was just left out of Rolling Stone Mag's Top 100 Guitarists of All Time list, and this solo became his middle finger to that awful decision. He was a last minute addition to the song. I still don't know where that guitar went. He just did everything with that instrument so carelessly, almost like it was part of him. No hesitation or thought. The reason he was left off that list was because he was so flamboyant, talented in other ways...looked at as a pop star. Bruce Springsteen was on that list.

Most definitely the odd-ball name on that song. But he made his mark that day, for sure. Insane, insane solo.
