The best way to make a small fortune is to start with a fortune.

"I was given a small loan from my parents, about $750K initially and then another $1MM when things got off the ground plus another $500K from friends of my dad who believed in the project, all of which I had every intention of paying back with interest ..."

Not really President's agenda but more University related.
La Salle has 37 members of the Board of Trustees.
Amazon has 11 members of their Board of Directors. Apple has 7. Microsoft has 12.
The world of Academia loves to have big boards which doesn't surprised me. Harvard has 33. Yale has 17. Princeton says they can have anywhere from 23-40.

Annual commitment to a minimum figure and capital projects from Board members. Corporations get $$$ from shareholders/debt holders, not Board members... I understand what you are implying but it is not great example

I understand what you are implying but it is not great example I thought 37 members of La Salle's BOT was a huge number. Compared the three largest Corporations by market cap and the three most "prestigious" Universities. Surprised that La Salle had more members than Apple, Amazon and Microsoft combined. I understand your point about the two being apples and oranges. Well taken. Your comments about schools getting an annual commitment from donors is also well taken.

Yes are you familiar with the school’s Charter.. The CBs get mandatory representation.. Actually adds to argument that the school has a larger board to raise money from since the CBs don’t give $$$

Maybe, just maybe , the time has come for the entire American system of higher education to stop and look at itself in the mirror.. Something is wrong. Lower attendance , high tuitions, ridiculous student loan payments, etc. IMO- the Federal Government must’ve create a committe , to find ways of saving this very important use of our nation’s best brain system. I don’t have the answers- but the future of our Nation’s best young minds is in jeopardy

Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth show the way ... once again.
By way of recapping recent past history : Approx. 15 years ago, the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth in Northeast Phila., who owned and operated Nazareth Hospital, Holy Family University and Nazareth Academy, due to ( among other things ) declining vocations to the sisterhood and the fact that most of their nuns were elderly, opted to sell their crown jewel Nazareth Hospital for a large sum of money ( $75 million ? ) to a local consortium of Catholic Hospitals. The proceeds were intended ultimately to fund nursing care for the nuns of the Order as they retired.
Meanwhile the beautiful 150 acre Thiokol Chemical headquarters campus at the confluence of I-95 and Route 313 in Newtown, Bucks County had been languishing for sale on the market for several years. Being suddenly flush with cash and looking for a place to invest some of this money until it was otherwise needed, the good Sisters purchased the Thiokol property, quickly had it subdivided, and sold about half of the land to aerospace defense manufacturer Lockheed Martin's Satellite Engineering Division, for more money than the good Sisters had paid for the entire 150 acre Thiokol tract a year or two before. The Sisters then used the proceeds of the land sale to Lockheed Martin to build-out their Holy Family University Newtown campus on their remaining 79 acres. To say that this bold and decisive action by the Sisters of Nazareth stunned the local real estate community, and the other universities and corporations who had considered buying the Thiokol property at the time but had hesitated too long, would be an understatement.
Fast forward : In today's Phila. Inquirer Business Section ( " Briefcase " on page A-10 ), it is reported that Holy Family University has entered into a partnership with developer NewCourtland Senior Services, whereby NewCourtland is acquiring the 32 acre former Liddonfield public housing site from PHA for the sum of $5.5 million in order to construct on the 12 acre West side tract senior housing and a health and community center, with the remaining 20 acres ( East side tract ) immediately adjacent to the HFU campus to be developed as athletic fields for Holy Family University, with no capital contribution from the good Sisters, other than that, in return, HFU has committed to PHA to donate $1 million in future college scholarships to needy local area residents.

Sister Francesca Onley, CSFN, PhD : The true visionary leader and astute businesswoman ( ' brains ' ) behind all of the above. Was still thinking outside of the box ( and taking names ) as Holy Family President until 2014 at age 81. Always available to provide sage advice and counsel to her successors ( ' onley ' when asked to do so ) up until her death. At one point was running Nazareth Hospital, Nazareth Academy H.S. and Holy Family University like well-oiled machines. Masterful fundraiser -- never shy or hesitant about cajoling ( ' arm twisting ' ? ) major donations for her capital Projects from prominent wealthy Catholic lay benefactors. May she R.I.P. The school did a great job moving the graduations to the Linc and it seemed to generate a lot of positive media over the weekend. Congrats to all of the graduates!

The cost of the education no longer justifies the investment in it at many universities. American University in DC charges over $70k per year!!!

Glad to see that Jeffrey Lurie and Howie Roseman dropped their initial PSL requirement for family and friends of the graduates to attend. Howie has nothing to do with the business end of things. Don Smolenski is President.
