Having a tough day on the Phillies broadcast.
Doing his best By Saam impersonation on Ryan Howard's HR. "That ball is well hit. Does it have enough?" The ball landed in the first row of the UPPER deck.
Then the Marlin's Rojas leaves the game due to the heat and humidity. McCarthy makes a flippant comment that "it's hotter here in Philly than in Venezuela." It would be funny except the camera follows Rojas all the way to the dugout tunnel where Rojas appears to need assistance.
Can old Tommy come through with the hat trick today? Whoops I didn't have to wait long. Pop up in the infield. "Ryan Heywood under it." Tom it's Ryan Howard.

Funniest thing is in his postgame interview, Jeff Francoeur mentioned he heard McCarthy say " Ryan Heywood" and that he (Francoeur) will probably take McCarthy's job.

I have now taken to turning the TV volume off and just watching the game or listening to the radio. Tom is absolutely horrible. Makes me yearn for Andy Musser.

Scott and Larry are so much better. Not even close.
Also I met Andy Musser a few times (he was a friend of a friend). What a great gentlemen.

Tom McCarthy is worse at calling the games than the Phillies are at playing in them. I can't stand anything he says. On that upper-decker Sunday it didn't help that the cameraman botched it too. The team is so bad, but I swear Wheels in the booth by himself all week and with Schmidt on home weekends would be better than McCarthy/Stairs and McCarthy/Davis. It just sucks and it's nearly impossible to watch every night.

So McCarthy has the night off for the Doubleheader. Gregg Murphy does the play-by-play. BORING. Jeb Bush boring. Painful.

All right, everyone knock it off. It was wrong to introduce politics into a thread that had nothing to do with it, and you knew Steve would take the bait.
You're on the "Other Discussion" board, go ahead and start a political thread, I don't care, just keep it civil.

Watching the game this afternoon and old Tommie comes up with another classic. "Line drive....on one hop to the pitcher." Then on the replay knowing he butchered the call and seeing it he says.." that ball took a longer hop than I thought."
Fangraphs has a article today where they rank the local broadcast teams for all MLB. Ours is the worst at #30. Loved the quote, "McCarthy seems more excited shilling for W.B. Mason than the team."
My pet peeve this week is him asking Stairs or Davis, "what should he have done on that play? I think he had time to_______." Second guessing bang bang plays.

I like TMAC, but what do I know. Yeah, in the same boat. Always thought he did a pretty solid job. Especially because coming in behind Harry couldn't have been easy.

I have no choice but to accuse you two of not watching these games.
I don't understand how anyone could like Tom McCarthy. He is consistently annoying and patronizing, and often his calls and descriptions of the action are utter nonsense. His forced attempts at building chemistry with each of his partners is uncomfortable to listen to, regardless of who he's sitting with on any given evening.
Granted, I think Davis and Stairs are awful, too. Davis is so fake on the microphone, and Stairs can barely get a sentence out and is impossible to understand sometimes. I have been longing for the days of Wheeler and Matthews, and I didn't think that was possible several years ago.
Schmidt is pretty decent, but sometimes he rambles and blatantly makes up stories (example: a week or two ago, he tried to claim that Washington intentionally walked Ryan Howard with the bases loaded "back in '07 or '08.")
These broadcasts are brutal. Thank God the games themselves have been excellent.

Maybe he shouldn't have 3 different partners. Bringing Schmidt in whenever you feel like it is terrible.

Yankees do that with Cone and O'Neill and it works out really well.

Yeah, if there's one baseball franchise you want to be like, its definitely not the Yankees.

Phillies TV broadcasts have been awful since Kalas died. Schmidt is the only guy I enjoy listening to because he speaks his mind. It's possible that the bigger problem is whoever is running the broadcasts force the guys to be over the top homers. I listen to away broadcasts whenever I can and almost all are better than the Phillies.

I'll just pretend that Chris Wheeler, the biggest homer of them all, didn't take over for Whitey in 1997, and that Harry never called a game with Wheels. That homer mentality ain't nothing new.

I actually really like the Phillies radio guys and as I get older, I like to flip them on and sit on my deck drinking an IPA.
How far I've come from my row home on Olney Ave.

I think being on the radio is what allows them to be great. Agree somewhat. There is definitely chemistry with the radio team and dysfunctionality with the TV team.

I think being on the radio is what allows them to be great. Totally agree. those two have some great, off-the-wall dialogue. Not sure it would translate to TV, but some of their one-liners are classics.
