Manhattan College has placed men's basketball coach Steve Masiello on leave while he reviews his degree status at the University of Kentucky, the school announced late Wednesday.
Masiello had reached an agreement in principle to become the new coach at the University of South Florida, but that agreement was then terminated.
"The agreement was pending a verification of credentials," South Florida said in a statement. "Through the verification process it was determined the candidate's credentials could not be substantiated and therefore he did not meet the requirements for the position."

Screw Masiello, what a crappy situation for Manhattan...

This would take a pretty interesting turn if it turns out he did graduate and it wasn't recorded properly, huh?

You can't misrepresent your credentials. I don't think you have to be a college graduate to coach at the college level.
President Truman never went to college but he knew how to close out the big game late in the 4th quarter.

Agree that you shouldn't misrepresent credentials but many colleges have a policy that head coaches must have a college degree. Not sure if that is the case at either Manhattan or S. Fla. but it is the case in many schools. IIRC, La Salle had a similar policy that they changed in order to hire Speedy.

I don't think you have to be a college graduate to coach at the college level. Truthfulness aside, does this make him hypocritical when trying to get students to graduate? I agree that ten credits is a rediculous way to tear apart a budding career, but how do you fairly convince kids to work hard, graduate, and earn their degrees if you haven't yourself?

USF, according to Francesa, has a policy of 6 years experience plus masters or 8 years experience plus undergrad, so that's why they were searching.
Did it come out as 10 credits? I was still willing to give him the benefit of the doubt because, if you don't walk and you aren't a serious student (basketball player and comm major??? (just kidding, guys)), I could see equating "done with four years" to "graduated". Not likely, but not impossible.

I don't think you have to be a college graduate to coach at the college level. I believe it is required for the job at Manhattan as well, which is why he's presently suspended. It would be a great PR move for him and the school if he keeps his job on the condition he completes his degree, which is what I think will end up happening. I doubt the will go so far as to fire him over this. Eddie Jordan was in the same situation last year and is currently finishing his degree at Rutgers. What made that situation so baffling is that Jordan actually attended Rutgers. Pretty amazing that it took a background check for them to find that.

Not that amazing when you consider that older records are not kept in a computer database. Most colleges probably could not provide you with a list of all their graduates prior to 1990 within a few minutes. It would probably take them weeks or even months to go through file cabinets, micro-fiche or scanned images.
