Who can resist a chance to revisit some of Martelli's creepish behavior, 10 years later? I remember my reaction to Martelli's Billy Packer comments at the time; paraphrasing Phil, "how dare a member of the media express an opinion that I disagree with?" I guess there are some shades of Coach K's recent anti-A10 rant in there, but to me there's a major difference when it comes from a paid commentator versus a coach. Not living in Phila anymore, I didn't hear that Tyrone Barley was in prison. What shocks me the most about that, is one of the SJ assholes who used to flame the old La Salle boards used "tyronebarley" as his username. He's probably Tyrone's [willing] prison bitch now. nypost.com/2014/03/20/ncaa-tourney-brings-out-worst-in-enablers/

"Division I basketball, like Division I football, remains predicated on fraud — financial, academic and social, the last in the form of the expensive, relentless recruitment of young, minimally educated and predominantly poor kids — many of them young criminals or soon to reveal themselves as such — to empower our colleges to win ballgames."
Mushnick is a massive piece of shit, but that's low even for him.

I don't know. Honestly in a story about Billy Packer and Phil Martelli, written by Phil Muchnick, Martelli is BY FAR the most likeable of the 3. Phil Muchnick is a racist cantankerous old clown shouting at the wind.

But .. but .. he [ostentatiously] used Scott Skiles as his example of a college hoops criminal!

Mushnick's trash.
Martelli should send Billy Packer a thank you card every year. Packer was a really great villain against the underdog. That gave Martelli so much goodwill and the like, especially locally.

Every Mushnick column ever reminds me of the old Simpsons newspaper article with a picture of GrandPa Simpson and the headline "Old Man Yells at Cloud"
I tried to post the picture, but I'm terrible.

Mushnick, Martelli and Packer all in the same thread! It sounds like the beginning of one of those 1950's ethnic jokes. A Jewish sportswriter,an Italian basketball coach, and a Polish announcer are sitting in a bar and__________________________________________________________________________.

Speaking of criminals... Gary Neal was pissed he was forced to ride the pine in Milwaukee. His narcissism showed and even the lowly Bucks traded him away to the Charlotte Bobcats... Neal was so overjoyed at this that he admitted not even bothering to turn in his stuff to the Bucks before leaving town. Hope Charlotte sends him down to the Development League where he can whine all he wants.

Did a lot of driving today and heard Mark Packer (Bill's son) who is a host on Sirius Radio with Tom Brennan (former Nova asst. and Vermont HC). MP gave huge props to the A10. Evidently Brennan and Packer have been huge fans of the A10. They had GW's Mike Lonegran on today and Lonegran was promoting the A10 all over the place. They mentioned the six bids this year and ML made sure to say that La Salle making the Sweet 16 last year was tremendous for the league.
Packer went on to say that the league is 8-9 deep this year. That St. Bonnies and La Salle are tough teams and really rough to play at their places. The A10 will be a strong league.
Contrast that to Fran Fraschilla who said the NBE is in a tenuous spot. The need GREAT recruiting. The switch to Fox was tough because he said he's a basketball nut and couldn't find games.
Finally a personal note, I heard a lot of basketball talk this tournament and one thing really struck me. I heard Archie Miller interviewed three separate times and the UD Athletic Director once. I believe they mentioned the A10 once and that was " the league we play in." That's a shame especially when you contrast that to Lonegran's exuberance.

To hear the Dayton people say it, they've been to the Elite 8 10 times in the last 12 seasons. That's ok though, great run for them and hopefully they recognize the chance that the A10 could conceivably surpass the Big East if the trajectories remain the same. Plus, we all know the media loved to gobble up new trends and stories, the fall of the Big East would be tremendous theatre.
