Bill Raftery (class of '64) and Verne Lundquist are calling 4 games tomorrow in Buffalo.
1215PM Ohio State/Dayton (CBS) 245 PM Syracuse/Western Michigan (CBS) 655 PM UConn/St. Joe's (TBS) 925 PM Nova/Milwaukee (TBS)
I enjoy their work but together they are a combined 145 years old. Will they make it through the day?

Getting to listen to Raftery will be the only enjoyable thing about having to watch UCONN play St. Joe's.
That and the fact that one of them will lose.

I don't get the somewhat consistent UCONN hate? is there some connection that I am not aware of?

Calhoun was always a very hateable guy. And they sort of stole Hilton Armstrong.

As Raftery & Lundquist survived (& did a good job) yesterday's Dayton-Syracuse game they are good for a few more years.

Verne and Raft are the absolute best. I think they're the best broadcasting duo in college basketball, in a walk, and maybe even more than that. They're the only ones who come off like they enjoy what they're watching. They have so much fun and they make watching March Madness that much more enjoyable. College hoops is the most fun American sport -- it's a really imperfect game (and capable of being brutal to watch) but has the best atmosphere and it the only truly national sporting event. Nowhere else can a small Catholic school in Philly play a commuter school in Idaho, Kansas' traditional agriculture college/football school, the bastion of the Old South preppy culture before losing out to a state school for kids who largely stayed around a small city in Kansas.
Raft and Vern get that and really make it special. They also make you realize that the people playing these games are still kids, and it should be fun.
There are so many miserable, wretched folks who do college basketball. Doug Gottleib is an absolute total creep. He rips these teenagers (many playing in front of a national audience for the first time) mercilessly. Doesn't he remember how he couldn't shoot a thing for his life (when he wasn't busy stealing credit cards)?
But Raft and Vern rule. Gus Johnson should be calling games, too. He was born for March Madness. But alas now he's going to cover soccer, where there are like three or four exciting moments a game. Not fair.

Assuming Vern and Raft will be doing a Regional next week. Hopefully it's the East Regional at the Garden.

Verne and Raft are the absolute best. Agree on Raft but for play-by-play gotta give the nod to Brent, past 70 but still the best in the business at scoping out hot chicks in the stands...

On that note, the crew that called Dayton-Cuse made Archie Miller's wife the star of that telecast.
