Sorry man, I don't fall for those "baiting" tactics that you try to use on people who disagree with you. I was baiting you to declare you weren't going to take the bait so you did fall for it. Too easy.

I love college basketball, obviously, but football and basketball players are essentially treated like livestock.
I know they get scholarships and that's obviously a big deal. But student-athletes are also limited in their employment opportunities and the like during school, thanks to scumbags at places like Oklahoma who give kids no-show jobs at car dealerships. I worked my ass off during the summers and also had work-study jobs so I had some spending money and to pay for books. These kids can't do that. Basketball players also almost never go home, which was DJ Peterson's listed, public reason for wanting to transfer. They get like one week off the whole year.
The NCAA Tournament is a billion dollar enterprise. The kids who participate in making the allegedly non-profit NCAA all that money do not get anywhere close to their market value. They're also completely limited in their options if things don't work out in terms of sitting out for transfers and the like. I've had jobs where the boss seemed great at first and promised me the world and then he turned out to be a jerk so I left. I've had jobs where the boss left to take a better position and left me stuck with some cretin so I left. I didn't have to sit out at all. Or when my buddies transferred either in or out of school, they didn't sit out.
It stinks how those kids are treated. Absolutely. If anyone on our team was to wear that armband that some football kids are doing, I would applaud them to no end. Good for them.
But what really stinks is that the answers are far from clear. G's right in thinking that the BCS schools would use mid-majors as a free one-year scouting service. I could totally see some kid somewhere packing up his bags and being picked up in front of his dorm by Jim Calhoun or Kelvin Sampson in person. Of course, we could do the same to MAAC and Northeast Conference schools.
College sports are filled with out-and-out garbage people. It's such a murky, terrible industry. It's really hard to justify liking it a lot of times.
The Sweet 16 and that whole two weeks were legitimately two of the best weeks in my life. I got to reconnect with so many of my friends. I also got to watch a lot of other people do the same. La Salle's a really special place to me and it was so awesome to see people everywhere recognize why the people who go to and graduate from 20th and Olney keep it so near to their hearts. The basketball team's success really meant a lot to so many people.
But is that trade-off worth it knowing that Ramon Galloway got zero dollars after playing in three games that made what's essentially his employer (the NCAA) a lot of money?

Is it really so stupid when the NCAA and NFL have such an arrangement? And name one student-athlete that dropped out after a year and started a successful business. We have to turn the colleges back into degree-oriented places and not a 1 year developmental league for future NBA players. Open your minds and think about the long-term future of these kids. Yes it is. Next question please. www.businessinsider.com/most-successful-college-droputs-2013-9?op=1Hey Richard Cranium, no one said it had to be a student athlete starting a sucessful business. In fact, that was the whole point. Why treat student athletes differently than the general student population (please read the comment again. I specifically said a student on an academic scholarship) As for a list of sucessfull drop outs, the attached link lists 19 pretty good ones. Your turn.

All you'd have to do to prevent the feeder system is place limits on the number of transfers in a school can take. Would maintain the same basic recruiting structure without maintaining the current one-sided university loyalty policy.

Its takes such an obsequious soul to argue the NCAA needs more power over athletes for the good of the athletes. For the benefit of us simple folk, it is requested that, henceforth, posters on this basketball messageboard kindly refrain from using sesquipedalian words or references like "obsequious". Your cooperation in this regard going forward will be much appreciated.

I knew obsequious no problem, but sesquipedalian was a new one for me. I had to look it up. You erudite posters are just too much.

The hiring manager had his neighbor's son from Saint Joe's pegged as a disrespectful jackanapes and was therefore reluctant to hire him. The same could be said for his son from Villanova.

Can't wait to get my hands on the sweet 16 banner. My son made a good point to me over the weekend. I hate to complain, but why are they only giving out 2,000 of the replica banners? All 3,400 who show up for the opener should get one. Do you really want to send home 1,400 unhappy customers?
