I heard the Donnie and Chambers "switching spots" was about Donnie having to get re-certified as a coach. Great guy and player, unfortunately didnt work out as a coach here.

Thank you for that information. There is obviously a lot of stuff I didn't know. This is a good place to learn.

No such "re-certification" process
NCAA requires all coaches, assistant coaches, and bench personnel to have a USA Basketball Gold Coach License. This has to get renewed every year and incudes background checks and educational courses they can be required to take when they renew.

I mean mid-year resulting in demotion... in the case of Donnie Carr...

Good list - although some of those guys are in better spots and I doubt La Salle will bid more for assistants. However, keep in mind Dunphy most assuredly knows who he is hiring with maybe some details to work out and maybe the decision to be made between two guys for a spot. That’s how this works - coaches plan this way in advance. When he was approached or put in for the job he already had a list and had already reached out to gage interest before even interviewing

In hindsight Dunph broadcasting the games this year was a plus. I'm sure he knows who in the portal that he wants to stay and who he doesn't want to try and get back. I'm also reasonably certain he has been checking the portal and talking to basketball people he knows about guys in the portal worth pursuing. The next few weeks should be interesting.

We're going to stop talking about a former assistant coach's wife who hasn't been associated with the school for five years. If you want to talk about why, shoot me a PM. Thanks.

i'm sure there are others I missed, but one name to add is former chester and providence guard john linehan. he's been on the staff at georgia the past few years but it appears he hasn't been retained by their new coach.

Yes. Gilyard passed him as an NCAA steals leader, thanks to his extra COVID year. Good candidate.

Throwing out some made up names here: - Al Parris - Tom Noethan - Brian Hornbuckle
All would be exceptionally qualified if they were real people.

Donnie Carr and John Cox have been on the road recruiting during the live period...

Donnie Carr and John Cox have been on the road recruiting during the live period... As you know that’s what happens before no staff is officially hired. If previous staff members haven’t moved on they get put on the road as most contracts run until June 1. And most want to show the new coach they are worthy of being kept on staff. After Turgeon stepped down then all his assistants still stayed on the road recruiting. Even after 2004, La Salle assistants stayed on the road even before G was hired Don’t read the above as “Carr and Cox were out recruiting meaning they will be retained”. They might be. Who knows. But them being on the road, especially with Fran being hired and then the live period starting 4 days later, as proof they are being retained

I don’t get a fuzzy feeling with Carr and Cox recruiting. Dunphy needs a dynamic recruiter on his staff.

Turg stepped down 8 games into the season...
That's a different set of circumstances

Yes it was a different circumstance but they still had assistants out recruiting. It was pretty obvious Manning wasn’t getting the job less a miracle run. I’ve also seen places where season ends, and assistants stay on (head coach retires, gets let go, is moving to a different job) and hit high school events that are still going on

So it’s beneficial for both sides to have the coaches keep going. Keeps the school talking to recruits and keeps the coaches in those recruit’s minds…wherever they might end up.

Why would any program pay Assistant Coaches $250K-$350K to not recruit for 6 months?
Of course they "worked"... They were being paid to work...
Dunphy is in full control of the La Salle program, that's very different from an interim coach...

Yes you want assistants to work. But it also costs money to travel and recruit It’s simple cost benefit analysis- cost to have assistants travel to recruit even though are probably not being retained (one Maryland staffer was retained, the other Manning who went ops to assistant role when Turgeon bounced, Willard is keeping him as ops) vs just paying them what you contractually have to anyway until June 1st

And Dunphy having control four days before the live period starts - EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to change out guys that quick and get them on the road. Much easier to keep Carr and Cox until new guys are settled. Especially if Dunphy is hiring for example (I will just pick a team) a Team Final guy. That Team Final guy can be hired later, let him coach his team and go see other teams play until he is absolutely needed to wear a La Salle polo on the road. And you’ll know this - Mike Rice was known to St Joe’s to replace Brady who took Marist in 2004. However Martelli had Rice finish the summer running Eastern Invitational so a) he could have an extra set of eyes on the road b) Mike could be unlimited in contact with recruits since he wasn’t officially on staff
