Smart! Brings local Catholic leadership to the table, with connections to Philadelphia-area donors. Checks critical boxes for me.

Seems like a good interim choice. I expect a new arena July 2.

"We sought a candidate with senior administrative experience, a deep knowledge of Catholic education in Philadelphia, an understanding of our university, and a firm commitment to the Lasallian mission—all of which Tim brings to this role."
Colleen met one out of four. They are adjusting or the interim criteria is a much tougher standard.

Can he change the culture at La Salle? That is a big question. The university is filled with good people but we need to elevate the school with some different thinking which if often difficult for new leaders to break through.
Does the interim tag prevent this? We shall see.
I don't need a new arena July 2nd but is he going to keep this in deep secrecy like it has always been? Will he be more transparent with the university's plans? It is far easier to get alumni and others to help when they understand what their money is being used for and know what the school is doing and trying to accomplish.
I am hopeful but skeptical at the same time.

Good Qs but the BoT says interim only so I’d bet most of what you want won’t happen since the BoT is what it is
If he can prep for a turnaround with some hard choices that’s about the most I can see being beneficial. The last search took over two years. That tells you a lot here imo

I asked this in the Colleen is leaving thread - Can I ask what seems like an obvious question that no one is talking about? Is there any movement on finding Colleen's replacement? Someone mentioned we may have an interim next year (school calendar wise anyway), and I find that unacceptable. I know finding a new President is a big deal, but she announced she was leaving on Jan. 11. Is there a search committee? Have there been interviews? I know there have been names mentioned in this thread, but I don't feel like re-reading 11 pages to find these answers. So it took nearly 5 months to find people for the search committee? As 23won pointed out, the last search took 2 years. If it took 5 months to pick the right people for the search committee, can we set the over/under at 2 years for us finding a new president? I'll take the over, which would be disgraceful IMO.

He can change the culture but he can’t change the fact that throughout La Salle’s history wealthy alums gives to their grad schools (Wharton, etc) in lieu of La Salle and the fact that when your have a school that caters to Pell Grant student and first to go to college you will naturally struggle to fundraise.. The money base is not deep.. You do not have trust fund babies like Nova and Penn

Is taking 5 months to name an interim and announcing the search committee names the norm? I don't know, I'm curious, but it seems a month and a half or so longer than it should take. Not trying to be combative, just frustrated at the pace. And again, I get how important the hire is, I just don't think it should take as long as it has in the past. I would think the Board would have a list of names saved somewhere to ask to be the interim, and a separate list for possible search committee names. Just as an AD would have a list of names for a new MBB/WBB coach if those positions were to open up. *end rant*

Two things not being mentioned jumped out at me in the email from Matthews:
"I am pleased to announce that Executive Vice President Tim O’Shaughnessy, ’85, has agreed to assume the responsibilities of Interim President of La Salle University, effective June 1. I have asked Tim to start in this role ahead of Dr. Hanycz’s formal departure, allowing her the time to relocate and to enjoy deserved downtime before she begins her new role on July 1. Dr. Hanycz has expressed her willingness to assist Tim as he takes up his new role, a gesture for which the Board is appreciative."
Translation: We want her out of here right away even though she isn't officially done until July 1. He's currently on the Exec Committee, and it appears they want him calling the shots starting June 1.
"Brother James Gaffney, FSC, the former President of Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill., and a former La Salle Trustee with 30 years of service to our University, has agreed to serve as Senior Advisor to the Interim President."
Translation: We need to get back to having a Christian Brothers influence that has been missing in the administrative decision making.

I'm happy to have Christian Brothers in the fold, but was also happy when we moved past them having to be the leaders of the school. Why were you happy that the school moved past the Christian Brothers as leaders of the school? I see parallels here to Malvern Prep. A few years ago their board brought in a hotshot progressive "popular" choice to be Head of School - a non-Augustinian. Wasn't a local guy, and maybe didn't understand fully the history or charism of the Augustinians in taking over his position. He changed a lot at the school...maybe too much...and alienated some faculty (a long-time faculty member who actually writes the AP Calculus exams left after the guy's blog post about "teaching old teachers new tricks" referring to him) ... and some alums. He lasted, I think, 5 or 6 years, and is gone. There are still some lawsuits going on from some things he did and some star hires he brought in. With his departure, the Board put out a very similar message to what ours put out about what they were looking for in the next Head of School. They brought back in an Augustinian and the school is now back on the right path. Donations ae up. There are plans alums and parents are bought into, and I can say it is thriving again in a way it wasn't under the hotshot. Don't be so quick to move past the Christian Brothers as leaders of La Salle. It is their charism which has to permeate through everything and every decision, and it is the common thread that runs through all our experiences there and brings people back "home". There is a comfort for many in that charism...a familiarity that many seek in a place like La Salle.

Why were you happy that the school moved past the Christian Brothers as leaders of the school? For me its the same reason I cringed when I saw 8 of the NY Rangers 12 general managers have been former Rangers players. Whenever you restrict a candidate pool for non-operating reasons, your odds of picking the best candidate are inherently lower. (We can agree or disagree if there's a benefit to having a brother run the school. I don't see how there is unless they come with an equal managerial background and that's bonus points or if you can prove a direct link to fundraising/recruiting.)

I got the response I expected. For starters, I don't think there is a comparison with a 35k per year elite all-boys high school in Malvern. Not going to respond to that.
If you think that the path the school was going on for the three decades prior (maybe 2.5 decades) to hiring Colleen were that great, why did she have to start in such a fundraising hole? Endowment didn't drop from an acceptable number to a less-than-acceptable number. It was always really low. The difference is now is that you have someone who was hired to do the job vs. someone that was appointed to do the job. You can't just whitewash decades of possible bad decisions on a number of fronts.
I've had a lot of good interactions with Brothers. Bro. John Kane was great for me the entire time I was there and he's seemingly doing a great job running Calvert Hall high school (17k tuition). But those jobs are different than this one and, in my opinion at least, unless you are Bro James Gaffney and have been president of a school for decades, nothing sets you up to be a successful president at La Salle.
And this is not me saying I want Bro James to be the next president...much different experience/hurdles at Lewis University.

The parallels were in Malvern bringing in a non-Augustinian and La Salle bringing in a non-Christian Brother, in the tenures lasting about the same length of time, and the board messages being quite similar about what they were looking for in a replacement. You should be able to see and acknowledge those parallels even if the profiles of the schools have differences, there are also similarities. You should consider the benefit of more involvement of the Christian Brothers in the leadership of the school, and how that can influence donations and mobilization of alumni.

I don't think elite, single-gender high schools have any problems enticing wealthy families to send their kids there. I went to an elite high school, paid between $7500-$8000 a year to do so 20 years ago. That same school is charging $26,000 a year to attend now so in that case I would have been way out (I was way out at the time but people made sacrifices for me). There's a wait list at La Salle High that circles Cheltenham, PA and I'm sure Malvern's is just as long. They don't have problems with finances. On to your final point, where were the large donations and mobilization under Bro. Michael? You're a guy with access to data and charts. Show me St. Joe's endowment from 2000 -> 2014 next to La Salle's. Show me the improvements on campus. Show me the growing enrollment YoY. I don't think it's there. So for all of the people who criticized hiring a Canadian president that was previously the head of an all-women college without an athletics program but then yearn for great leadership of decades of FSC brothers...I want to see the data.

I didn't mention enrollment anywhere. I mentioned fundraising and engagement, and the presence of a Christian Brother in leadership. I think what you are saying is THAT PARTICULAR Christian Brother did not advance the school (like maybe...a different Christian Brother named Brother Pat did). That doesn't mean throw out all CBs from consideration. I also never said to automatically put one in. We want the best candidate, but to summarily dismiss Christian Brothers leadership makes no sense. Maybe there is an alternate leadership structure instead of the traditional "President" construct that ensures a place for Christian Brothers leadership as well as a true "CEO" of the University that could be a lay person (and that seems to be the model in the interim). And I recognize the challenges of this without a large pool of Brothers upon which to draw, but it had felt like the "Christian Brothers" part of La Salle has been on the backburner for the past few years, and I'm hopeful that changes.

The pool for Christian Brothers is shrinking, quickly. Guess I'm just looking for someone more forward thinking.

I just feel bad that Brother Patrick Ellis didn't have a protege. You never want to see a President move on without having someone who can take over at least most of the key roles. I'd push for JellyBean to be President if it meant he could put the school in such a great position that the groundbreaking for Lionel Simmons Arena started by October 1 this year... but would still like to see a Christian Brother as the President who could communicate well to the students and alum.

Sorry: Christian Brother as president Bro. McGinnis oversaw the renovation of the Holroyd Center, the expansion of South Campus, the initiation of Founder's Hall, and helped bring a grocery store into the area when there wasn't one close for residents to use. Not saying it was a perfect 15-year run nor the best fiscally managed one, but there was growth, expansion, and an increased positive presence in the local community.

And I liked Brother Mike, I just think his trajectory as a leader was in the wrong direction. You are welcome to use the link I provided and assess whether his 15 year term was fruitful or not from a data perspective. The numbers I provided did show 3 years of his administration and the donations were the highest during his time with that data, and there were two $200K plus revenue years with expenses well below revenue. Endowment also grew 22% during those 3 years in the tables I shared to be right near the all-time high.
