Proposed NCAA Basketball rule changes

Ran across this today. I'm sure I'll come off as a STAY OFF MY LAWN person...but I don't get some of these.  Specifically:

- Eliminating 1-and-1 free throws and going to double bonus after 5 fouls every 10 minutes
- Eliminating the 10-second backcourt violation
- Giving every held ball to the defense...so no alternating possessions
- Letting a team decline free throws and keep possession with 2 minutes left or in OT

Some others in here like widening the lane from 12 to 16 feet, and giving players 6 fouls instead of 5 (but only 3 per half)...but the ones above seem the most whacky.

The only that I vehemently oppose is removing the 1 and 1. I have always liked that about college basketball.

On the held ball thing- they call too many of them in college. They should throw them up all like in the NBA, and I guarantee you that would also lead to the refs calling them less.

The declining free throws thing would be a fundamental disruption to the way basketball is played. Can’t imagine that happening without years of deliberation about it first.

I hate the held ball. Refs are awful enough without being baited into giving a trailing home team three held balls in a row rather than calling the fouls.

Don’t like. Shoot 2 after 8 fouls instead or keep as is

-they whistle these way too early already; keep as alternating but do jump balls in last 4 minutes of each half

Letting a team decline free throws and keep possession with 2 minutes left or in OT. No, that rewards the elite teams

I don't know if you misunderstood me or your just being a jerk, but I would keep college basketball rules exactly as they are today, with the exception of the held ball. I tend to be a purist in most sports, I eschew most of these gimmick rules being put into sports today. I could write for an hour on this. However, the NBA has it right with the jump ball. Get rid of the possession arrow.

How about capping the number of 3pt attempts to 20 per team, per game? After the 20th attempt from 3, the made shots from 3 only count as two. Might add a bit more strategy/coaching to the game.

thats very weird. but oddly fascinating.  I don't think I'd actually like it in a game, at least when I think about it in a game. But I do love the idea.  So much coaching. If you're down 12, you dont just chuck up 3s, you have to be deliberate about it.  It would keep games a lot closer I think too.  

This has my mind all tangled up. But I think I kind of like it- but cannot decide.

I played both. PIG was usually played when everyone playing was lousy shooters as Horse could take all day otherwise.

I don't like any of the proposed changes. It sounds like you'd need a secret decoder ring to figure out what rule applied when. "Let's see.....it's Tuesday, there's a full moon, and the caterpillar's have thick, black hair this year, so that means.....jump ball."

It's the same way they're trying to ruin baseball; 7-inning doubleheaders, start extra innings with a runner on second, a relief pitcher must face 3 batters....etc.

It's people with too much time on their hands that have nothing better to do than come up with unnecessary rule changes.

Agreed... if Bud Selig's legacy is the 94 strike and steroid era, than this jerkoff Manfred will have the legacy of fundamentally changing the game of baseball. Just like the jerkoff Goodell has severely changed NFL football. Don't preach player safety, we're gonna shorten OT, we're trying to eliminate kickoffs and onside kicks, and then give me Thursday night football and lengthen the fucking regular season. It's not going to stay a 17 game season, because of the unbalanced home and away games. The 17 game schedule will be a bridge to an 18 game schedule. That's what Goodell wanted all along, he didn't give 2 shits about the players' health.

Unless the NFL expands rosters to 80-90 players, basically college sized rosters, all this lip service about player health and safety is BULLSHIT. I'm the most old-school 37 year old around, and long for the football of the 90's, but don't preach health and safety and blindside the players with the bullshit. Don't talk out of both sides of your mouth.

Kind of interesting that you guys brought baseball into this, since the NFL, NCAA, MLB, NHL and NBA all seem to have forgotten where their draw comes from. Across the Atlantic, the giants of soccer did their own massively dumb thing which will so aggressively alienate fans in what should have been such an obvious way that it almost seems like intentional sabotage. I mention this because almost all of these changes are superficial at best and malicious at worst. It's like someone up top had to justify their salary by making up a bunch of arbitrary rule changes. The more NCAA basketball becomes like NBA basketball, or worse, international basketball, the worse it will be. Does the NBA even have a traveling rule anymore?

I would, however, be 100% in favor of real jump balls. If you wanna get real spicy, 4 points for shots made from beyond half court.

My impression is that, as far as baseball is concerned, they're trying to appeal to the "short-attention-span" crowd, the casual fan, that won't be there tomorrow - but will buy the trendy tee-shirts, go for the side-show atmosphere in the stadium away from the game.  They're not necessarily forgetting where they came from, they figure the hardcore baseball fan will be there no matter what - which may be worse....it could be an implied "we've got your dollars already, we don't care about you" message.

I actually agree with everything here. In particular, "Jerkoff Manfred" and expanding the NFL rosters to 80-90 players. I get irritated watching an NFL receiver limp off with an injury, and hearing the announcers state that the team "is down to their last receiver". Why??? Expand the game day rosters. No reason not to. Except payroll of course.

Not all rule changes are gimmicks. I don't like most of the "new" baseball rules mostly because I think they're ineffective at solving the problems they're trying to solve, which that the games are too long and too slow paced (which are not necessarily the same thing), but the things they could ACTUALLY do to speed up the game, they're unwilling to do- namely cutting a few commercials, or legitimately enforcing guys to stay in the box, and for pitchers to pitch quickly. I personally don't like the DH either, but at this point, with it having been around for 50 years and existing in literally every league on earth except the NL and one of the Japanese leagues, I think it's time to bite the bullet and make it universal.

For a rule change that unequivocally made the game better, the Force Out rule in the NFL was dumb and eliminating it helped. If you make a catch in the air and a guy forces you out of bounds before you can get your feet in- it shouldn't be a catch.

The DH takes strategy out of baseball. It minimizes the importance of bench depth, it takes away the double switch. It takes away the importance of an 8 hole hitter turning the line up over. Then the pitchers that take hitting seriously, that can swing it a little bit, they lose out.
