Doo-rett, Michael Brooks, and lionel Simmons. Not many can match that. We had Durrett in 70....Brooks in 80....and Simmons in 90.....I had come to expect a savior every 10 years but the wait now seems endless

Billy Hahn is a super underrated coach. Got Explorers to the semis in ‘02 and lost to Jameer’s team in ‘03. He deserved to be let go, but a 2004-05 roster with Neal...who scored 1000 points at two schools, Steve Smith, Jermaine Thomas and freshman Darnell Harris would have been an A10 contender and probably a tournament team that year or next. That potential tournament appearance reshapes the next 15 years. i'm sorry. i couldn't not comment on this. you do realize hahn's career head coaching record is 79-99. there is one reason la salle made the a10 semis in 2002 and his name is rasual butler. hahn was a lousy coach. and i won't even comment on what type of person he was. I don't think we have enough data to tell what type of coach he was. One could argue La Salle was better under the couple years of him than the last 5-7 with Speedy based upon results but you're right, that might be Butler based. Either way, the 04-05 and 05-06 teams would have been stacked.

Maybe its just me, but even talking about those teams in terms of basketball seems gross. Like Penn State wondering if Sandusky staying on as DC could have led to a better bowl game or two.

Neal/Smith combo was 1st (and last) time we had 2 NBA players in same class since Larry Cannon, Bernie Williams and Fatty Taylor, I believe. I don't think Neal played winning basketball, though. He made the NBA because he had an elite skill, but I don't think he did the little things you need to do to win. Still, Smith/Harris/Thomas/Neal would have been a pretty potent top 4

The 03-04 team quit on the season, as they lost like the last 8 games in a row. JT had Graves disease, and they were tweaking his medicine to see if they could get him right. It wasn't a good season for him. Cleaves had a major regression from his freshmen and sophomore years, he wouldn't pass Gary Neal the basketball. Gary could shoot from anywhere inside of half court, and would if he wanted. He didn't have a great handle, and he was less interested in playing defense than DJ Peterson was in shooting the basketball. It was amazing that he was able to finish up strong at Towson and work his way to a productive NBA career.
David Bell sucked at everything, and ended up transferring to ECU that summer. MSJ was strictly a banger down low, he hadn't developed a perimeter game until his junior year. Sean Neal played sparingly, Flo Larkai often hurt, Fadipe had stone hands. Steve Smith was starting to emerge as one of the best up and coming players in the A10.
So if June 24, 2004 happens where they all pass out in the townhouses, we have a bunch of juniors, 1 senior, Neal and MSJ as sophomores, Cunningham, Diaz, and Harris joining the Charmin soft redshirt freshmen Roman Narmbaye. If the team hadn't quit down the stretch of the 03-04 season, I would've felt decent about the future. Alot of shot making ability on that team.

That was a walk down memory lane.

Or maybe they rape a different girl a different day. Can we please stop with the "one big whoops that could have been solved by lack of opportunity" like its having an air conditioner fall on your head in NYC? They committed a horrific crime against another human, I don't care about their jumpers and how many they could have made later if she or they had decided to hit Wendy's instead.

You'll never hear me vouch as a character reference for Neal or Cleaves. We can talk about how the program would've been different if the events didn't occur. We can separate their abilities as basketball players from their character. Stlexplorer asked about the program before he arrived on campus.
They had their day in court and were found not guilty. Now that doesn't always equal innocence, but they had their day in court. How people view them is something everyone has to decide on their own.

Gary Neal married the daughter of the basketball head coach of Boyertown High whom he met while at La Salle.
