Um...I know. The initial "show of hands" question was as absurd as mine. I forgot to use sarcasm font. Of course people change jobs...even while under contract.

Completely thrilled. As are many alums and faculty.
That being said, we can't ignore the fact that under her tenure (and we can argue the pros and cons of all these):
- enrollment dropped precipitously in the past 3 years...including pre-Covid - homecoming tent was eliminated - homecoming Mass was eliminated - art was sold - sports were cut - salaries and benefits were cut - staff was cut - some alums became disenfranchised with the political posturing - school was closed in the fall when they most needed enrollment (and when a valid reopening plan had been worked on by several people and was in place to keep students and faculty safe...like many schools did that were open) - she sat on the multi-million dollar Glasser gift with no communicated progress or plan for her entire tenure despite hiring multiple consultants and it having an expiration date - the school's credit rating dropped to just above junk bond status
These are facts. You don't have to like them, and are they all entirely her fault...absolutely not...but this is the legacy of her 6 year tenure. The school was not in the best financial shape prior to her joining, but did all these things leave us better off or worse off? I asked on here and didn't get an answer...so I'll ask again. Can you counter these? What are the positives I'm missing that have made La Salle a better place thanks to her leadership and initiatives?
As the theme of this thread is facilities, let's focus on that....there have been multiple consultants hired, but what has the impact to facilities been? What has been executed in the last 6 years?

Absolutely love that points two and three were the elimination of the homecoming tent and mass. And didn’t La Salle see a bump in enrollment after the tuition reset?

And didn’t La Salle see a bump in enrollment after the tuition reset? yes...i've given you those numbers...bump (and then low retention of that bump) and then a decline. Like starting out a mile race at a 100 meter pace and then falling behind.

I really can't think of anything the school has done that would be considered overly political. Unless Press Releases like "racism is bad" have some sort of political context I'm unaware of.

Also, unrelated to La Salle's performance over her tenure but very related to this nonsense about her as a traitor or whatever, there are very obvious non-career reasons she may have wanted to move on from Philadelphia that people probably shouldn't be forgetting. Every kid that transfers or coach that leaves or I guess president that takes the same role at a higher university isn't doing it to personally spite the alumni.

Honestly, I'm willing to concede that maybe she didn't do a good job as President. I honestly don't know enough to form an opinion on that and I don't really think my opinion on it is all that important. But you're also not an objective observer on the matter, and I think that's why this becomes so fucking tedious. You clearly hate this woman, and by extension anything associated with the school in its current state.

I don't get the praise and patting on the back of the BoT for her great work for what has objectively been a disaster of a hire Objectively, by whatever measure you want to use to judge a University President - enrollment, endowment size, financial stability, alumni engagement, faculty support, retention of staff (hired by that President) - is the University any better off than they were 6 years ago? Educate me...what am I missing?

Folks who work in academia have been telling me for more than 20 years that the role of the college president as legacy figurehead is a strategically outdated concept. The academic landscape is shifting faster than ever, so presidents need to be focused on a much tighter agenda. I see similarities here to the modern CEO role, though I'm hesitant to extend that comparison too far without further thought. Whether or not CH executed against such an agenda during her time here is a valid conversation. Whether the BOT appropriately defined that agenda and then hired towards it is also a valid question. (What on earth La Salle's Board of Trustees actually does may be the most valid question of them all). Nonetheless, conflating any of these issues with matters of loyalty is somewhat of a distraction in my opinion. Frankly I would be open to seeing a succession of 5-6 year presidential terms if they were all consistently executing against more tightly defined objectives for the school. Interesting read here. Much of it is specific to state universities, but the themes are relevant: www.aascu.org/MAP/PublicPurpose/2017/Summer/TheErosion.pdf

Further rumination:
In looking over the length of tenure for the past few presidents, I was surprised to note that Burke was president quite a bit longer than I remembered, and McGinniss for less. Not sure what my point is except that perhaps the length of CM's tenure is surprisingly within the historical strike zone for this position.

In all fairness Glitter has not been 100% against Colleen's decisions. You, my friend, were a vocal proponent of selling the Art. Which in the end failed to produce the proceeds forecasted and was frankly an embarrassment all around to the University and the Museum.

There are times I think it was needed financially and other times I think it was being penny-wise and pound-foolish. When you look at in the context of other cuts, and not really anything of substance to show for it...I begin to wonder if the WAY it was done (blindsiding the faculty) was worth it. As a senior executive once told me early in my career...it isn't always what you do, but how you do it that people remember.

What am I missing here that we can point to as a positive of her legacy that left La Salle in a better place after 6 years?

I think she did a good job. I think she rid the school of some administrative dead weight. I think she began the process of changing the way the school thinks from the ‘led by elderly Christian brothers’ way of thinking to a more future focused, 21st century way of thinking. Did she execute all of the plans? No. Did she do everything you want? No. But she took over a school with a big financial problem, in a tough part of the city, without the resources of local competitors and she worked to do the things we all wanted.
I’m going to get personal. I know that you’re on the Alumni board and I know that you have been vocal there as well as here (they know who you are here) about your displeasure. The other side of that conversation is the lack of realistic plans to do what you want and the lack of any realistic ideas to just snap a new arena out of thin air. We aren’t in the bank statements. We aren’t in the detailed enrollment numbers. We don’t know how deep the hole goes. But since we don’t have that dataset, we can be upset or disappointed, but you’ve crossed that line to angry and downright mean at times.
For those of you that remember me on the boards 10 years ago, I was like this with regards to Giannini. Maybe I’ve matured but you’re older than I am and I think the problems facing La Salle’s president are greater than my perception that Giannini couldn’t coach at the A10 level. I know that we have our disagreements on here and quite frankly, I don’t like the way you act on this board. But I just don’t think it’s fair to hold the outgoing president to a standard that may be unreachable and without any actualized plans to fix what makes you so angry.

Nor am I the only one on the Board who voiced displeasure at certain decisions...but not just the WHAT...but the HOW. Reality is...we (and most of the faculty) are around much longer than an administration. Engagement means not just accepting what's happening, but allowing ourselves to question and be critical of it. but you’ve crossed that line to angry and downright mean at times. Not angry at all...more disappointed at where things are. If you think pointing our facts is mean, so be it. I know that we have our disagreements on here and quite frankly, I don’t like the way you act on this board. HAHAHAHAHA. Sorry, I'll save my criticisms for an active female alum like you did previously instead of the paid leader of the school

Can you outline means to your ends beyond "some people should figure out how to do this because they receive salaries"? Its always the same nonsense ... "WE SHOULD HAVE AN ARENA" "WE SHOULD BE A TOP HALF A-10 TEAM" "ENROLLMENT SHOULD ALWAYS BE INCREASING" "OUR ENDOWMENT SHOULD BE A LOT HIGHER" but you never propose how. Its always the same childish "I want this so someone should get me this" and its never "this is the path I think we should take to accomplish".

Its always the same childish "I want this so someone should get me this" and its never "this is the path I think we should take to accomplish". Why is it his job to point out what has to be done? The President has a BOT and her appointed President's Advisory Council which give her input supposedly. I've been around a long time and know quite a few people on both. The common theme is " where's the plan? What has happened since last time we met?" Yes enrollment should be higher. New School of Business had lousy freshmen enrollment last year. Can't sell that education and state of the art building/ On a side note, I believe recently Medical, Dental and Vet Schools all sent out there acceptances. La Salle has a tremendous percentage ( at 95% one time) of acceptances. I personally know of five students who were accepted into one of those three schools. I can not think of ONE time the President has sent out a tweet beating our chest on "look how we are doing such a wonderful job". Meanwhile SJU tells incoming FR that they are guaranteed a job if they get into the Food Marketing Program. I just SMH. My nephew went to SJU and became a doctor. SJU did practically nothing for him in fact tried to get him to change majors. La Salle has a wonderful mentoring program with current grads who are doctors. Yes endowment needs to be higher. How many gifts of over $1 million have come into the school in the last five years? One? Two? Three? We can't be draining the emergency fund which is the purpose of the endowment. Laughed when Dan Joyce sent out that congratulations message thanking everyone for raising over $1 million on the Day of Giving. I hope his department isn't getting full credit for those contributions. How much effort did they put into DOG? That $1 million might be 1/5 or 1/6 of what Advancement raises this year? With Joyce making $250k and a staff of what 10? Speaking of DOG, i have not received an acknowledgment from the school or the two teams that I donated too. I did not give to MBB because I never received a thank you the last time I contributed. So I decided to contribute this year to WSOC and Women Track. Same thing has occurred this year. No thank you received. So next year I'm on to another sport. I have friends who have received thank you messages. WBB note in particular was out in a week. What is also weird is that one friend said they never processed his matching gift form and another friend said they did. Go figure. Those are the big two. I'm sure I'll get roasted for this. So what? I've been around here a long time. Been sucked back in many times when I get annoyed and say "why do I care?" We all care for the school. I know that no one "hates" the President just like no one "hates any present or former coach" unless his name is Billy Hahn.

You're right, people are allowed to yell about what they want without accounting for how/whether it can be done, but that doesn't facilitate any deeper debate or conversation. If you're going to complain about enrollment decreases, I'd think at a minimum you'd start with overall trends of private (religious) universities from 2015, when Dr. Hancyz took over.
As for the endowment, I stay out of this entirely because I have zero idea how a university should fundraise or what kind of base we're fundraising off. I don't know if we're doing a good relative job or a bad relative job or we're right on expectation. I do know everyone seems to be happy every year with the annual day of giving so many our issue is more we don't have the massive donors to supplement the smaller donors. I have no idea, I admit this and I try to stay out.

You're missing the point, Joe. If that person's job is to make us better at X...or at least to present a plan to be better at X...and they don't. Then yes..that person has been an utter failure. Can you objectively say...if this Glasser donation goes to waste...that it wasn't a failure at the highest levels of La Salle?
