My only question is will Ash get a call? Good question, but I lean towards "shut up, no, he's our coach, shut up".

Fun Fact: I went 3-0 coaching against his brother Paul (former Penn player) a couple of years ago when I coached our CYO team.

Maybe it'll stop the caravan of Philly HS players to Happy Valley.

Would be really weird to hire a 66-year-old Phil Martelli.

Phil is better than Ferry. He doesn’t have leverage being an assistant and all so they could do a one year offer and negotiate from there. If a better one comes along with the coaching carousel then PSU switches horses. If Phil does well he forces a 4 year deal and retires on his own terms.

Except find me an example of a college coach on a one year deal. Kind of makes it weird for recruiting.

If you follow college hoops Phil does most of the media like podcasts for Michigan. He makes sense. How many former national coach of the year winners become an assistant? It shows he has a passion. If an interim wins he has a shot
Amaker ins't leaving Harvard for PSU. His wife is a professor at Harvard. He would leave for the right job but PSU isn't that job
Avery Johnson got canned at Alabama and has no ties to PSU or any track record of success. That idea makes no sense.
Philly is 3 hrs from PSU. The Brett Brown one makes no sense. Does he have a desire to coach college or can he be recycled in the NBA?
Crispin is outside the box but he is an alum and a college head coach. He would at least get an interview.
I have also seen Andy Toole's name thrown out there. Robert Morris is switching conferences so it would be a good move for him.

Good, but winnable conference (unlike Pitt in the ACC which is beyond stupid IMO). All the money in the world. Fantastic facilities. Close enough to Philly/NY/DC to grab recruits.

With all due respect, I think you are the only person in America to call PSU a "great job." BJC has enough seats, sure. But it's a super sterile oversized arena with no personality. Penn State has had such a historically insignificant MBB program, it is irrelevant to the student body. Football, Wrestling(!!!), WBB, and Volleyball all draw more than MBB and have more buzz on campus. In the last 28 years, they have had 3 winning records in conference. Yes, it's close enough to NYC/Philly/DC to draw recruits. But there are also 15 programs with more allure and history that are closer to any of those places. Why would a Philly kid go 3 hours away to get beat up every year in conference and not make an ncaa tournament? There are quite a few rumors I've heard of impermissible benefits that drew some of the Roman kids to PSU, even if those are false, selling State College to a philly kid is not easy.

With all due respect, I didn't make them out to be Duke. But they won the '18 NIT. They were ranked ninth in the AP poll last year and were certainly going to the tournament if it wasn't canceled. Chambers has gotten kids from Philly, even ones that they didn't pay (and I think Tony Carr was paid). Phil Martelli, if he became the head coach, would do better than Chambers there. Ashley Howard on Penn State's sideline would clean up.
Do they draw like other Big 10 schools? No, but if you're going to build a program it is a good place to start. And that was my point. It is a good job for someone to come and build because there are no barriers to doing so like you'll find at a ton of other schools. So as far as available jobs go for people like Tommy Amaker, Penn State is a fantastic job.

I'm more in the camp of Exploring15 on these points and will add a few. They don't have "All the money in the world" for basketball. For decades, they have allocated all the big football $$$ among Title IX sports and related facilities. Their womens' facilities are among the best in the country. However MBB has historically stunk and lagged in getting their fair share of the pie. That's why they hired Chambers on the cheap in the beginning and stuck with him. He was far cheaper than a big name hire. Many alums I know have called out for years for a splash MBB coach hire, and they have rightly made the case that there is great opportunity for big revenue share for NCAA points that would justify the move. But the AD has shot that down for years. For this and other reasons, I could see a cheap Martelli hire as a band aid. Even if he wouldn't agree to a one year deal (fair point) they could do a 2-3 year deal with plenty of cause termination rights and manage the payout so the net loss would be less than what they would have paid Chambers on a pro forma basis. And sources claim Chambers resigned in lieu of going through a for cause fight so they apparently did not need to make a parting payment. Net net, PSU is playing with house money on this and Phil is well positioned as the Philly pipeline guy/ X and O guy/ National Coach of year cred / has Big 10 experience cred that this is more than plausible. If they keep Ferry and they don't make the tourney (pretty good odds) alums will go nuts, so IMO they need to go elsewhere

I don't see them hiring someone like Phil because right now the roster is pretty depleted and the pipeline is sparse. You need someone that will recruit like CRAZY. Someone like Ryan Ayers would probably be a cheap guy that could get things going and have ridiculous energy recruiting. I also disagree that Penn State would be "fantastic" for Amaker. He has a great gig at Harvard which I'm sure is paying well because it is endowed and alums have stepped up to keep him there. Look at guys with a lot of success at Ivys, it rarely translates to P5 schools. Donahue flopped at BC (who I would argue is a pretty similar program in relation to their conference that PSU is in) Dunphy did pretty well at Temple, but Temple already was well positioned in conference and in terms of the image of the program being at the forefront of the school. To build a program, you want some kind of tradition or history or well-known/successful alums in that sport. PSU doesnt have any of that. The best program for Penn State to try to copy is Iowa. Recruit the hell out of the middle of PA, NY, Ohio and get 4 year guys that will grow together to compete in 4 years and build a pipeline like that. Trying to get city guys to go to the middle of nowhere isn't a particularly easy sell when there are many more city schools with better teams and more allure/familiarity/comfort.

Forget the Iowa model. Hire Mc Caffrey
He’s probably like getting 12 hours closer to Philly and family

If Shaka Smart has a rough yr at Texas I could see a preemptive strike where he tries and gets the PSU to restart his clock so to speak. He is from Ohio so he would be closer to home

Baker Dunleavy hasn't won yet in 3 years at Quinnipiac. Chris Mooney was already on the hot seat in Richmond, doubt Penn State goes for him. Some possible names I have seen that make some sense and some that I think make sense.
If they wanted to really pay up (which they probably don't because theyd rather spend mens athletic money on football) Mike Rhoades (VCU,from central PA) Shaka Smart (assuming he gets fired from Texas) Travis Ford (SLU)
If they will go for a cheaper options John Becker (Vermont HC) Andy Toole (RMU) Ryan Ayers( Was with ND, son of former Sixers HC, Randy Ayers)

Why do schools pay coaches who in essence are leaving for cause. Wichita is paying him over 7 million to leave when they could just fire him and if he chooses to sue so be it. What does Marshall have on the school that they are willing to pay him. As more incidents like this occur how does the NCAA make the argument that athletes shouldn't be paid. They must have the money if Wichita can pay Marshall 1.3 million a year for the next 6 years to just go away. What a message to the entire Wichita State community.

I agree that it is a bad precedent, but they do have an extremely wealthy donor in Charles Koch. Meanwhile Kevin Ollie was dismissed with cause and got $0, because it was a minor NCAA violation (even though it was really performance).

Giveansk1. I understand that they have the money, I just think it would be better to let Koch pay their legal fees. It will be interesting to see what LSU does with Ogeron now that the scandals in his football program are coming out.

He had some insane contract that renewed automatically at $3.5M a year plus perks unless they could show cause, and some ridiculous buyout if they couldn't. I'm guessing they just figured easier to pay him off over 6 years than litigate this in a lump sum and have it drag out...and possibly have their own dirty laundry aired in court since they enabled his behavior for years.
I mean... Marshall getting kicked out of an exhibition game in 2016 says a lot about his demeanor. Also...wasn't his wife kicked out of an NCAA game for cursing at Kentucky players or something?
