It's amazing to me that people on here don't "believe" the data that's being publicly reported and sourced from La Salle's own filings to the Department of Education. Maybe there is a second set of books being kept in the recesses of the Art Museum that will be discovered if we hold the Staff of Ra in just the right position at sunset.

Or maybe the data isn't inclusive of all costs of the program.

Yeah, Jensen fucked up. Baseball's Operating (Game Day) expenses are $249K. Basketball's Operating (Game Day) expenses are listed at $1.4MM, versus Total basketball expenses of $5.1MM. Its not an all-inclusive number. ope.ed.gov/athletics/#/institution/details(No direct link but you can work your way through to La Salle.)

Yes...clearly you have insight beyond what has been reported and disclosed to the Department of Education based on your gut feeling.

Still crying about Portnoy hahahaha The baseball team that wants so badly to be saved brought in a guy that killed the university publicly on his well-trafficked social media feeds and then the same baseball team doesn't believe that the administration is being fair and upfront with them about how to save the baseball team. Can't have it both ways. And I don't blame the kids for trying, but you can't also blame people in the administration for being upset that they went the Portnoy route. So the admin should hold a grudge against the kids for trying to do everything they can to save the program? The admin (current and past) failed these kids.

Methinks it will be interesting to see how much of the costs savings from the elimination of these seven sports -- at least in the short term -- is initially " reallocated " to the men's and women's basketball teams budgets in order to achieve / accelerate " lift-off ", under the calculus that a dramatic improvement in La Salle's A-10 Conference MBB and WBB rankings status will generate enough additional income (e.g., TV revenue, A-10 "units", NCAA "units", ticket sales and team merchandise sales ) for the Athletics Dept. to more than make-up / restore any temporary deficits of ( and possibly substantially enlarge ) the team budgets of all of the remaining men's and women's non-revenue sports ( a/k/a " a rising tide lifts all boats " strategy ). View Attachment La Salle Administration, AD and BOT pursuing a " rising tide lifts all boats " strategy ?

Bradshaw was told to hire the best coaches he could find and went out and hired a phenomenal coach in Miller. Miller put together a 5-year plan, had 3 nationally ranked recruiting classes, and in year 4 of his 5 year plan has has taken the program from worst in league to the top of the league.
Seems we have another coach about to enter his 4th year at 20th and Olney. I wonder if he can do the same.

Am I the only person who's thinking there might not have ever been a number that could have been raised to save the program because they want to redevelop the baseball field site?

No I bet there was a number. I just don’t think they were close to reaching it. Maybe they have plans for the spot but if someone cut a big check they’d keep the team.

I'll start here with my thoughts (with 20-year-old numbers). When Brennan was there, roughly around the 1999-2000 or 2000-01 school year, he flipped all teams budgets to strictly donations, so whatever you raised, that was your budget for the year. Obviously that didn't included coaches salaries and scholarship money. Definitely don't know if this is still the case, others might be able to answer that. When Brennan got there, the Athletic Department budget was a mess from Mullen and everything was paid through the university budget, to my recollection.
So the outgoing money for baseball, and most teams, would be - 1) games day staff. Who does the scoring for the baseball team, and do they still have a PA guy? I did both jobs when I worked there, and as part of the SID office, didn't get paid any extra. Table staff for soccer/FH/Volleyball would include an announcer and scorekeeper. Back then it was in the $25-50 range per game for those teams. Basketball table staff was in the $75-85 range per person (scorebook, 2 stat people, announcer, time out coordinator for TV games, might be missing 1 or 2 there). 2) officials. again going from 20-year-old numbers, most Olympic type sports, the officials were in $75-100 range per game, maybe top end of $150. (for baseball purposes, that's 3 umps). Not sure what the per diem/travel expenses set ups were, but most Olympic sport officials were within a 3-4 hour drive. Basketball was another animal. We had a December game in like 1998 where all 3 refs made over $1100 for the game, cause they all flew in from Florida (Speedy was pissed about this). They are scheduled thru the league so you had no say in this, but I've heard the bball pay has flattened to a single number per game, instead of getting per deim/travel/game rate. Meaning, you might make $700 1 game, then $900 the next depending on travel costs. That number is probably in the $1500 range now, and I'm sure I could be light on that number. 3) field/court pregame maintenance. All these would be University employees, so I don't believe there is extra pay there. Also, aren't all the fields turf now? So, outside of prepping the dirt around the bases/mound/home plate, what other work is done before every game? The SID staff sets up a the table staff stuff. And if there is a tarp, that is/was the teams job to put on/take off. 4) coaches salaries. If baseball is paying 2 guys, what is that salary? $75-100,00 combined? maybe less than that. Excluding basketball, I'd have to believe the track coach would be the next highest paid, because, technically, he is the head coach of 6 teams. 5) scholarships. I believe baseball has an NCAA max of 11 1/2 or 12 1/2 scholarships. Think back in the day, they had 10 1/2 or 2 less than the max. Usually 1 or 2 players had full rides, the rest was sprinkled around the team. Not sure what the scholarship numbers for the other teams. 6) travel. The last few years baseball has done 1 or 2 long weekends in North or South Carolina. Softball has gone to the midwest for tourneys. A quick scan of the other teams schedules, outside of league play, the biggest trips I saw were West Virginia, Virginia and North Carolina.
What did I miss?

Not sure what the scholarship numbers for the other teams. 11.7 is the NCAA limit - and that's for a fully funded team which I doubt any of the teams at La Salle are for scholarships other than the headcount sport ones likk basketball and volleyball. This year's baseball roster (after transfers) is 31, so even if we assume they are fully funded, that means La Salle is still receiving tuition revenue from the equivalent of 19.3 players (plus room and board) - conservatively $800K. In years' past they had more (38 on roster a couple of years ago), so conservatively $1.1M in revenue for the 26.3 equivalent of players.

A question for you Glitter... Is the number for tuition and room and board taking into account that the athletic programs for most of our sports stack athletic and academic scholarships? From my understanding a lot of the athletes who are on teams that are not fully funded get academic money to make it more appealing for them to come here. Or is this by calculating the full cost with no help at all? Just a question to try to gain a better understanding.

I took a guess at $42K per unfunded player. $32.5K for tuition plus $15.2K for room and board...and I figured maybe ~2/3 lived in on campus housing to get from 47.7K to 42K. Didn't account for academic aid in it at all in that. (Federal aid and loans taken out to attend are accounted for because the school receives that revenue). If we assume everyone on the roster also received a $10K academic merit award, that still puts this year's team at ~$620K of revenue (and the 38-man roster from 2019 at ~$840K) for La Salle.

I'd like to think that if the baseball team was making money, they'd keep the baseball team. Or it's a Title IX casualty. I have absolutely no data to back this up, but my guess is that finding walk-on players on the men's side is easier than the women. I still lean to the former though.

Has anyone considered that rather than eliminate baseball, they should expand the roster to 90? If you run the simple numbers above, the University would be looking at ballpark (pun!) revenue of $2MM.
