I feel pretty stupid even starting this discussion, but since we don't have a game for 5 days and there's been some discussion on it recently, I figured I would bring it up.
Should we keep the "karma" feature, which is the props/diss thing, or disable it? I never gave it much thought when we were starting this board up, and I'll admit I kind of like the idea of being able to basically give some one a point up or down on a post they make.
But there's a few people clearly being horse's asses with it. A few guys have Reps in the -20's or so who in my mind are some of our better posters. It's like someone is dissing them as often as they can (which is once an hour). There are a few guys with really bad "reps" that I actually agree with, but that's just a personal opinion. No one has a Rep above like 6, meaning people are using the "diss" a lot more often than the "props."
Again I feel silly even spending this much time talking about this, but I will leave it to the board to decide. I'm not able to modify how often people can vote, or tell who is voting which way on people, so it's basically the current system, or getting rid of it entirely.

I'm running a negative rep and I'm not losing one minute's sleep over it. In fact it makes me chuckle.
Whatever the board decides is fine with me. I'll post my opinions regardless.

Alternatively, I could change it so that everyone starts at 100 or some other number. That way, maybe everyone would use it for normal reasons and not silliness.

I'm not sure who I pissed off to warrant my negative 10 rating that I just discovered, but I don't really care either. I've never propped or dissed anyone and not sure why I would.
Sorry for my poor rating - I feel like la salle hoops circa 2003 with an RPI of 185 and everyone shouting to throw us out of the league

I take great pride in my personal disses. Just keep em coming for no apparent reason, trolls. However, the fact that the entire board is (netting) below zero has caused me to realize that we all look like losers. (Speak for yourself!)
I myself have been promoting people rather regularly, particularly good loyal La Salle people like Neumann and Explorer88 who for some reason must be actually sort of unpopular with the rest of the crowd, I guess because they dare to have an opinion or disagree with someone else and aren't afraid to vent. I rarely diss anyone unless it is to pull back some cred.
Another board that uses a similar diss feature requires you to give a reason, also signed and dated, which is all transferred to the poster's public profile page, as well as the post which received the points. This encourages users to be accountable, reasonable, and not to duplicate diss. There is also a cap on how many times you can rep or diss the same person, and that cap is on the order of two per month. That board recently got rid of negative rep, which is a shame because sometimes you have to tell people that you're dissatisfied with them.
But if someone wants to log in every day just to diss me, I'm glad that incentive is there for you and that you have nothing better to say or do. Fine by me. Just don't diss EVERYONE and their mother, remember what they say, karma is a bitch and it goes around.

We're going to update to 5.0 of the boards software. We'll see what is in that.

Cal, I think it's pretty obvious who is responsible for dissing you. I'm just surprised the number isn't higher. In fact, I'd be willing to bet the primary "disser" for everyone is the same person.

It really is the stupidest feature on this board. In fact it is totally worthless.

Really, they should go. They're dumb and add no value. And maybe a certain dummy would show up less if he didn't have a cool blue button to click every hour.

See, I think they do serve some kind of value, but not the way they are currently being used. But I'll leave the thread up for the rest of the day so more people can weigh in, although now the consensus seems to be that they should go. Or maybe I should just ban the guy we all know is causing this anyway.

All I know is that when the thread about props and disses is the hottest thread on here it's got to be the bye week!

I'm sort of indifferent to it; didn't know what my rep was until I looked because of this thread. I think the only way the rep feature has value is if you can see what post earned the props/diss. Otherwise, it doesn't say anything about how people are reacting to your comments.

My street rep of 2 proves that I am totally irrelevant. I was hoping to pump my number with my annual keepers/goners college coaching status thread (March).
I say keep it for now.
Delaware fired their FB coach (KC Keeler) last month. Maybe the new AD will try to replace Monte Ross.

Keep it. Gives each person individuality and uniqueness. No offence, but it would be hard to differentiate all of you guys if you all had the same "street rep".
