I meant to post this yesterday, but forgot. This is from a mailbag on The Athletic - For 2021, is George Washington a sleeping giant in the A-10? Between a strong incoming sophomore class, a solid transfer combo of James Bishop/Ricky Lindo and a potential of a solid ’21 class, things are looking up. — Ken L. Sleeping giant? That seems a bit strong, considering the Colonials have finished 11th, 13th and 11th in the league the past three seasons and haven’t placed higher than fourth since 2014. That said, Jamion Christian is an impressive young coach, and this team does have a lot of good, young players. An upper-half finish in the A-10 in 2021 is certainly possible. But chew on this: According to the latest U.S. Department of Education figures, which were collected in 2017-18, here’s how GW compares to some of its league peers in men’s basketball expenditures: • Dayton: $7.4 million • Saint Louis: $7.4 million • VCU: $6.1 million • Saint Joseph’s: $6.2 million • Richmond: $4.8 million • Rhode Island: $4.8 million • George Washington: $3.6 million It’s hard to be a giant when your spending is dwarfed by the teams you need to beat. A small, private institution which has been having enrollment and financial issues is going to be a bigger spender than state schools like VCU and RI as well as a rich, private school like Richmond?

I've wondered this. I think we have the most varsity sports of any A10 school, and I've often wondered if some should be cut to focus budget on other areas. Even Stanford with their multi-billion dollar endowment dropped some sports in the wake of Covid.

Even Stanford with their multi-billion dollar endowment dropped some sports in the wake of Covid. And no one ever questions those endowments. Meanwhile .... ..heck the piddling interest could keep people's jobs.
