Not to give away my age, but in the early-to-mid-60s several young fellow-basketball-junkie friends of mine and I would drive from Northeast Philly to the Fern Rock SEPTA Station and take the Broad Street subway to attend several of the Charles Baker Summer League games, which at that time were being played in the basement gym at Bright Hope Baptist Church at 12th & Oxford, Sts, adjacent to the Temple University campus. Mutual love and respect for the game of basketball was the mortar that bonded everyone in attendance those nights. All of these years later, I still vividly recall watching in awe the athleticism and magical moves of such star players as Wali Jones, George Leftwich, Frank " Watusi " Card, " Tee " Parham, Hal Lear, Lewis Lloyd, Guy Rodgers, Bill " Pickles " Kennedy, Bruce Drysdale, Ray " Chink " Scott, Billy Melchionni, Billy Cunningham, Bill Bradley and ( on one fortunate occasion ) Earl " the Pearl " Monroe ( a/k/a " Black Jesus " ), among many others.

Look at that shithole gym The crazy thing is that we played in that gym more then we played in the Palestra and Civic Center. From the 10th grade until 1998.
