Tommorrow is Senior Day for Shaggy, Saul and Moustapha. I want to thank them for their contributions to the University and the MBB program.
Moustapha unfortunately had knee problems. It was a shame we didn't get to see what he could do on the floor. I will say it was refreshing to see him hit a couple of 10 foot jumpers. It's been a long time since I saw a big man with a mid-range jumper. Just goes to show what a big man who can hit an outside shot can do to open up the offense.
Thank you Saul for your contributions. In this thread I won't get into him too deep. Rather, I do want to go deeper into Shaggy.
Shaggy was a late signee. 88 always says that you have to be very lucky to get a contributor in the Spring. I think Rutgers at the time was his other main offer. Keep in mind, Rutgers then is not the Rutgers now. He wasn't a P5 recruit. He was potentially a good pick up for a high mid-major program. He had the reputation as a scorer and not a shooter. He was a mustang. Needed to settle down and harness that energy. Had that Brooklyn playground mentality. He was and still is streaky.
Shaggy takes a lot of heat here and in the stands. Some deserved. Some (IMO) undeserved. Case in point, people were all over him for the last shot in the home game with SLU. I was told by two people who know far more than me, that the play out of the time out was for another player. That player was not in the right position. So the ball went to a second player who let's say didn't feel comfortable taking the shot and winds up passing to Shaggy. Shaggy is 30 feet from the basket with about 3 seconds on the clock. He has to shoot right away. Why? So he makes a difficult shot or gives the #1 Offensive rebounder in the country a chance for a buzzer beater bucket. The shot doesn't go in and there is no offensive rebound. Then what? Shaggy gets ripped for taking a bad shot.
Look he's inconsistent. He's streaky. He has a lot of holes in his game. That's why he's at La Salle folks. He also hustles his ass off. I don't know how many charges that he has taken in his career.Maybe 40? I thought Rohan Brown took a lot but Shaggy has to have twice that amount. It always made me scratch my head when I heard somewhere that last season Ed Croswell led the team in charges? WTH?
Okay so bear with me because this week we've had a lot of stats thrown around. I will join the discussion. There are two areas Shaggy and to a degree Saul get criticism as Seniors. One is bad shots ( I assume from beyond the arc) and two is turnovers. I will leave Saul to others and throw some stats out there on just Shaggy. I will use just the entire season but compare him to just A10 players who play at least 40% of the minutes in a game for their team. This info comes from Kenpom as of Thursday night.
Turnover% National Ave is 19%
Senior Yr. #46 out of 85. 16.1% 8th lowest Sr in A10.
Junior Yr. #39 out of 86. 16.7% 9th lowest JR.
Soph year #43 out of 90. 16.7% 10th lowest So.
Fr year was not included since he only played in a few A10 games.
3 pt% leaders National Ave is 33.3%
Senior Yr. #23 out of 59. 35.0% 3rd best Sr. in A10.
Junior Yr. #19 out of 55. 34.8% 8th best Jr.
Soph year #49 out of 60. 29.1% 12th best So,
Fr year was not included since he only played in a few A10 games.
Two other stats were interesting when I was looking at that site.
Fouls Drawn. Major issue for this team is getting to the line and we'll see below that we foul too much.
Senior Yr. #15 out of 85. 4.5/gm 4th best Sr.in A10.
Junior Yr. #26 out of 86. 3.9/gm 10th best Jr.
Soph year #27 out of 90. 3.9/gm 4th best So.
Fouls Committed per 40.
Senior Yr. #21 out of 85. 2.28/gm 5th best Sr.in A10.
( Beatty #68,Kenney #73,Hikim #81 and Croswell #83 out of 85) MAJOR ISSUE
Junior Yr. #40 out of 81. 3.11/gm 14th best Jr.
( Croswell #67, Carter #69, Beatty #71 and Kimbrough#80 out of 80).
Soph year #40 out of 90 2.80/gm 12th best So.
( Washington #87 out of 90 next worst was Phiri at #49...BTW G's last season).
So what does this say? IMO, Shaggy is an average mid-major player.
Lastly, Shaggy is 46 points shy of the 1000 point club at La Salle. I would love to see him get that after all his struggles off the court. If not then so be it. Congrats again to Shaggy, Saul and Moustapha. Good luck and stay connected to the University and the program.
