Since it's obvious that the program won't get better with 3-star (or lower) rated players, what are you (or what is the school) doing to make La Salle look good to prospective players in order to get better recruits?

Thru the Duquesne game, opponents have scored 1472 points to our 1447; a margin of 25 points or 1.2 points per game. During that same 21 game period, LaSalle players have missed 132 FREE throws or 6.3 a game. Why hasn't a serious and successful effort been made to improve team free throw shooting? A small improvement would have won quite a few games.

What are the most important changes the program must make in order to be a consistent winner? And what hurdles are higher: perception or reality?
Thank you, Del

Why does this team have inconsistency on finding or staying with the hot hand or that guy who scored 2-3 basket in a row to help with these scoring droughts?

Here are a few questions:
How is Jack Clark's recovery progressing? Does he currently participate in practices or training? Have his Doctors given him a date when he can play?

do you really think they're not addressing this problem at every practice? IF they are addressing it, its not working. If its not working, why have they not tried something different? At one point Dr. G said that he never tried to correct a player's shooting mechanics in season because he felt it did more harm than good. I think that his thinking was that the muscle memory was so engrained by the time the player got to college there was no point in trying to change it. The other possibility was that he tried yelling and cursing and found that didn't change anything so he just left it alone.

Ask Coach Howard if he is allowed to bring in Elena DelleDonne to teach foul shooting....and while she is at it ...she can swing by the Sixer's facility and work with Ben Simmons. Now, MisterD, am I being serious?

As the coach of mid-major 18-24 year olds? Guys come into the NBA without a jump shot, i.e. Kawhi, so if professionals at the top of their game can develop and change their bad habits in their mid 20's, than an 18 year old that has yet to have top rate coaching can develop. Besides Rodney Green, Steve Weingarden, and MSJ, I struggle to come up with a player that came to 20th and Olney and couldn't shoot, and left with a decent jump shot. 3 players in about 15 years. Maybe that mindset was a microcosm of his player development issues.

During that same 21 game period, LaSalle players have missed 132 FREE throws or 6.3 a game. Why hasn't a serious and successful effort been made to improve team free throw shooting? A small improvement would have won quite a few games. Interesting. La Salle is #286 in FT% (.662). If we were average (.705) that would be 15 more made FT's or .71 pts per game. If we were in the top 1/6 we would be shooting .748 or 32 more made FT's. That's 1.5 pts per game. So FT shooting is a problem. Let's look at some stats where we are WORSE that #286. Offense We are #325 in attempting shots near the basket ( layups, dunks and tip ins). We are #327 in making those near basket shots. Defense We are #304 in free throw attempts per 100 possessions. ( We foul too much) We are #346 in points per steal ( opponents quickly convert when they steal). We are #295 in Mid-range opponent attempts We are #288 in allowing opponents to make mid-range shots. So we have more problems than FT%. FT shooting is just more obvious. Anyone see something in these stats? OT I wish this staff could somehow recruit a "poor man's version" of a Marcus Santos- Silva or Hasahn French. Both bring a physical and mental toughness. Their skills aren't bad either.

Free throws are a 'gimme' in the game of hoops. It should be easier than other shots, where you are moving, often off-balance or there may be a defender on you, etc. For a free throw, you stand stationary with no defender. You can relax and set up your shot. The height of basket and the distance to the basket is the same in every gym you play in and you can practice it by yourself after or before regular practice. You can go to the gym by yourself. There are shot coaches who help with this. Even YouTube videos. With all the $$$ spent on coaches on the La Salle bench, this 'gimme' should not be as bad as it is.

It could be attributable to fatigue arising from: the higher level of intensity in defending that Ash demands; or the higher level of skills on display in the A10 from top to bottom. It also could be calling out for a different mental approach and rhythm to take shots at the line. I don't see a lot of confidence in our guys' faces when they get to the line. Jerrell Wright had a similar problem that was reversed in season with a mental focus on a word or concept before taking a shot. That change led him to be a beast in the Sweet 16 run, and his clutch foul shooting was the difference in many important games. Perhaps Ash could tap Pappy for an answer or reach out to G (or Del could suggest these ideas to Ash) as a means to improvement. Finally, if fatigue contributes to poor foul shooting, a common practice drill is to practice FTs after intense sprint work. Since we miss FT shots consistently through the game, I don't think physical fatigue is the issue; instead IMO a need for a different mental approach or rhythm set up is the answer. The fix for this problem could vary by player, where one needs a mental concept for confidence but another needs to fix the problem by changing to a more pronounced pre-shot knee bend, exhale/inhale process or dribble routine; some guys don't dribble and some too much, but a change to a one dribble or three dribble routine could make a difference. A new positive mental approach or pre-shot rhythm is not like changing a shooting mechanic, so this should not be hard to implement during the season IMO.

OT I wish this staff could somehow recruit a "poor man's version" of a Marcus Santos- Silva or Hasahn French. Both bring a physical and mental toughness. Their skills aren't bad either. Part of this is Ed drawing double or triple teams, but the biggest part of this is a failure to push the ball aggressively up court for transition opportunities when the opponent's D is not set. This happens off of a defensive rebound and really happens a lot when we are slow at breaking the 3/4 court press teams seem to constantly throw at us. Compare our play to URI and it is vastly different. At least one guy jets out off a defensive rebound and a lot of effort is made to pass the ball up to make an easy finish opportunity. In a "claw it out" defensive game, those easy finishes are why URI only has one loss. They are not that great executing on the first shot in a half court set, but they do win an awful lot. We dribble way too much, off a rebound and especially in the press setting off a make, where we rarely advance the ball by passing over the press to create gimmie opportunities. This delay often means we give up 7-9 extra seconds on the shot clock and this contributes to our scoring droughts, as well.
