We play hard. Penn is obviously superior. But not in anyway an impressive performance by us. We sure helped them win with finding a lotta ways to beat our-self.

Young team, we will have to endure the growing pains, try to be patient. with that said, we cant rebound the ball, too many turnovers and too much one on one play. This may be due to the glaring lack of outside shooters.

On a more positive note, Hakim can play. Its going to be fun watching him develop.

We really need shooters and with our size we really need to rebound. It’s gross how bad we are at rebounding. Puts a terrible taste in my mouth that st joe’s is up against UConn and we look like the same team from three years ago. It’s an overreaction but still.

I also remember someone saying Spencer was a “knockdown shooter” in the preseason

Ash looking like Brett Brown there letting a huge run happen without taking a TO Was one of the key moments in the game...it went from 7pts down to 10 and then 13

Sometimes you just have to see how the youth will react to a run. Do they fold? Do they fight back? Tonight we folded, but fought back later in the game cutting a 19 pt deficit to 8 late in the second half. This team will be frustrating at times, they will get better.

Very disappointed in our coaching staff. Totally sensible reaction.

The team is very limited shooting and scoring the ball....Deas has to play, and he has to take shots, and we have to learn to be okay with it.
Unless everyone is ok with scoring under 50 points a game.

Unless everyone is ok with scoring under 50 points a game. Well thats why Deas is coming off the bench to give them a offensive boost..because you have such a defensive starting group in Saul Beatty Scott...if they get game 1 scoring from starting 4 and Deas and Hikim play that way like today...this team is going to be good...Ash has to find the right group and sub patterns

I watched for most of the 1st half. The team looked tired, lacked energy and disinterested. As was I, so I turned it off at halftime. When a team allows 16 offensive rebounds, they are going to lose. Plain and simple. Doesn't matter how many scorers you have on your team. Need to come back and play a whole lot better, and with more intensity on Saturday. A win to get us to 2-1 would be nice, but I don't see it happening.

Not a lot of juice in the program. I really thought Ash was going to be the guy to get the buzz back.

No juice indeed. Also, the Penn band made a few rollouts...which were typed and somehow printed using what I imagine is the worlds largest printer.

No students are going to go to games until we are literally making the tournament. That’s a fact. Unless we land a high profile transfer like quinerly last year, there will be no buzz. It’s sad but true. Once they start actually winning games, whether it’s next year or the year after, we can talk about bussing kids to the palestra but until then it’s not worth it

It has been done before and was successful. We didn't make the tournament in those years. The problem isn't just last night. There is not a buzz at all with the program. We are not exciting, much less very good. No identity still with this program. I was hopeful Ash would create that but has not right now.

Sky is falling early in Explorertown. We're talking about the coach bringing "buzz" and he's playing with half of Giannini's guys.

He won't get all of his players until 4 full years. We should not need to wait that long for a picture of what the program is to become. I am not asking for an NCAA appearance or fire Ash. I haven't seen much improvement and we have no real efficient scorers in this program. Not one player can still break down his man score the ball. It just feels very blah right now. Just my opinion and I understand not everyone share the same opinion.

Additional thoughts from watching at the Palestra
1) Offense was run completely opposite (too much one man iso plays, players being too bunched up and congested) of what brought success in the Iona game (crisp, quick passing, good spacing, creating the good perimeter looks and getting to the lane with good passing for easy finishes).
2) Players are not boxing out on the D boards or being smart with positioning to get an O board. On one play we had five guys in the lane with one Penn Guy and Penn got the rebound.
3) We gave up a big early second half lead and Ash resorted to (imo kept in too long) a lineup that got us back in the game but ran out of gas. I can guess that Ash was sending a message to Beatty, Spencer and Phiri by doing this, but he had a shot to get us back in the game by rotating fresh players in and wearing Penn down and he missed that opportunity. If I am right here, I think Ash needs to think more about getting the W and saving the messaging for practice and the film room.
4) Would like to see more subbing like the first half of the Iona game and guys coming in and playing like it's the last three minutes they will play in the game. Iona - gutsy and passionate play; Penn - disinterested and passive. C'mon, it's the freakin Palestra - get jacked up and play that way!
5) Ayinde and Deas kept this game from being an ugly blowout; those two playing with Ray showed some extended flashes of really nice play. Would like to see them in some form of core regular play.
6) We had a shot to flip the game at the 3:51 mark when we played great D, stymied Penn and got a steal, only to have a ref make a really bad late non-call on Ayinde boxing brodeur in the lane way away from the ball. We need to bounce back and be resilient after a bad call. We kinda gave up at that point. We could have been gassed but we need to learn from that, dig deeper, and/or rotate players more frequently.

We should probably fire Ash Howard so we can hire another coach that you'll be unhappy with.
He's doing fine. Everything is okay. The program's projections aren't any different today than they were yesterday.

If we made the top 25, people would whine that better coaching/recruits would have us in the top 15.

Free Donnie Carr t shirt jersey to first 250 students on Saturday. That will hopefully bring some students out, although he played at La Salle before half of the current student population was born.
I think Howard is still trying to figure out who plays best with each other. Will be interesting to see who plays the most towards the end of the year. Team will look alot different next year without Deas and Phiri.

I went to every home game. The school is doing whatever they can to get kids to go to games and nothing works. I’m not bashing anything, I’m just saying what’s going to change this situation quickly would be making the tournament or landing some major recruit. Kids aren’t just going to wake up one day injected with this major school spirit.

Also just to clarify: I’m a major supporter of ash and his crew of coaches. They’re what this school needs. I’m simply saying if anyone is expecting a vcu-like atmosphere you need to wait a little
