Two reasons why this loss hurts:
1) we lost potentially another critical tiebreaker for the Brooklyn bye
2) we now may need at least 9-3 over the next 12 games to stay off the bubble

This loss is going to make it extremely difficult. Can it happen? Yes. But there is little, to no, room for error now. I just don't think we are consistent enough to do it though.
We HAVE to beat GW twice (which will not be easy - we very well can lose down there this weekend), Fordham, Duquesne, and Rhode Island. And we have to go 2-2 against St. Joe's, Temple, St. Louis and St. Bonaventure. That gets you to 7-2 in the last nine.
Then we have to win a round in the A-10. If we hit 22-9 when all is said and done - we have a shot. Anything less, it's NIT again.

Going 7-2 in the past nine is all but impossible. I think if we go 6-3 in the A-10 remaining schedule and then pick up at least one game in the tournament, we will be damn close, the only reason being the Butler and VCU wins. But that's a long shot at best. Best case scenario is six regular season wins and pick up two in the tournament. Not going to be easy but, like always, we've done this to ourselves.

I agree with you that 7-2 will be extremely difficult, which is why this game was so, so important. Also agree with you that we've done this to ourselves (see CCSU and not pulling this one out today).

Not time to panic. UMass is 54 RPI right now and may break into the top 50. I don't suspect this will move us from IN to BUBBLE. I think we are still IN.

If our name was Temple, St. Joe's, Xavier, St. Louis, Dayton, Richmond or UMass, I would agree in a second. But we aren't, and we have to overcome a lot of negative (or non-existent) perception surrounding our name. We're going to need more than just the bare minimum to stay alive; more than other teams need to get in. Right now, I think we're back on the outside looking in, albeit barely.

That was my point about soccer getting a 15 seed despite their top25 win against WVU and an undefeated 11-0-1 run thru the A10 schedule. MBB will deal with the same bias. It's ridiculous, but you know if we get 22 wins we might be sent home. 23 wins? we'd be a 14 seed in California.
