Inq reported that he has a good relationship with Coach Ash decommitted from SJU. Got it. We knew that I think.

Thought he came off OK in this interview and didn't really burn a bridge. Spoke from the heart and answered the questions. Only time he got really choked up was when Angelo played the clip from Jay.

if I recall correctly Ang asked about the Jay quote and Phil digressed to talk about the support he got from Coach K. When I heard it I couldn’t figure out if he was bragging about the K support or was so verklempt that he couldn’t speak to the Jay quote. If you look at the transcript you think he’s a jerk but when you hear him it doesn’t come out that way. Way too much emotion here and trauma to judge the guy. I hope he gets a job with a team that plays SJU on a regular basis.
I also just noticed the SJU AD bio - she was a labor lawyer before going to ND. That and the absence of Don D should have been writing in the wall for Phil. It sucks that his players got hurt but I am sure there were a number of meetings where she built a record to dismiss him without too much legal backlash. IMO she blew the human element of how to handle it and SJU will feel the fallout for years especially if she makes a bad hire. “Basketball is a strategic asset of SJU.” That is when you can break out the Popcorn and watch the fireworks.
Could be a barn burner.

" ripped my heart out "
" caused my family irreparable harm "
" what its felt like, Angelo, I've attended my own funeral "
" is now a place I worked, not a way of life anymore "
" has left me with a wound I fear will never heal "

How exactly was Jill supposed to handle this? Unless Phil was going to announce a final year similar to Dunphy and ride off into the sunset, what was the proper send-off? It was never going to be easy to replace a coach of 25 years. She made a quick, clean break, the school can focus on its next hire before the upsets start happening and guys become hot names. Phil can decide what's next for him, coaching or media, he can regroup. He can come back to campus next season or in a couple of years and get recognized, have the court named after him, etc It's been a tough year for Phil, no denying that. As a La Salle guy, I couldn't stand him. But I will recognize that he did alot of charity work and I appreciate the Coaches vs Cancer work. I got the impression that he was close with Jay and Fran, not necessarily G.... But I could be completely wrong there. By the AD not making this about politics and having "her guy" a priority over a man that's led the program for 34 years. By not firing him in just 5 days after the A10 tournament and having a total of zero discussions with him beforehand. La Salle gave Giannini two weeks and had MULTIPLE discussions with him. They didn't want to burn a bridge with G because of who he was to La Salle and who he is as a person. By not firing the guy a month after losing his father. By not even exploring the option of taking a similar approach to Temple allowing him the have one final season and transition the program to another coach whether that was someone on his staff or elsewhere. By not even mentioning any of his charitable work in your press release which was 3 DAMN PARAGRAPHS. The list goes on and on... This is absurd. Temple lost a year giving Fran a year-long standing ovation. His dad died, yea, but that doesn't mean Saint Joe's is going to set themselves back giving him a month extra to grieve before firing him. What nonsense. 5 days after the season ended is perfect, when else are they doing to do it? After their guy signs somewhere else and recruits don't get the message from the new coach in time? Great idea. Bodensteiner would be very smart to hire someone with philly roots. No one has really had success in this city without them. Thankfully, she can hire one of "her" guys in Ingelsby or the ND assistant Ayers. Both went through ND while she was there, both grew up and played high school ball here. Ingelsby has a head start building area ties as a DI coach and recruiter in Delaware, but it's not as if he lit the world on fire down there.

All those quotes are about how he personally feels. He said "It ripped my heart out" ... It being the firing when asked by Angelo about the execution of it. Not St. Joe's ripped my heart out, or Bodensteiner ripped my heart out. None of those quotes represent a bridge burning to me.

Not sure how Temple lost a year. Temple made the NCAA tournament this season, hired the guy they wanted and didn't lose players or recruits. The transition has seemed to be pretty seamless. I'm not gonna hash this out anymore. It's over with and in a couple weeks SJU should have their next coach. I will continue to loathe them even more than I already did.

Temple went 0-2 in the postseason with a talented team because they were compelled to give one of the worst postseason coaches of all time (that's not an exaggeration; guy's won 5 meaningful post season games in the last 10 years, 3-17 in the tournament) a lame duck year. No recruits were going anywhere with McKie taking over. Martelli has no business anywhere near this team after what he did with this year's group. Now they'll probably have a year with Brown, Kimble, and Bynum and a coach that might be able to get something out of them.

Ironically, the Gospel reading at Mass today was the Parable of the Fig Tree...where the landowner wanted to cut down a fig tree in his vineyard after three years of no fruit, but the man who cared for the vineyard convinced the landowner he could care for the tree for one more year and it would bear fruit, and if not, then cut it down.
I think the argument against Phil was 3 years of no post-season, correct? I wonder if Bodensteiner was at Mass today and made the connection.

Temple went 0-2 in the postseason with a talented team They're not that talented outside of Alston. Lol, Quentin Rose has NBA aspirations and Nate Pierre-Louis was hands down the best backcourt defender in the league, on top of averaging over 13 points and almost 6 boards standing at 6'4. JP Moorman led the team in 3 point percentage. Alston wasn't even close to the most talented player on the roster this year, he was responsible, clutch, a good ball distributor, and everything went through him. But we can talk about how talented the roster is outside of Alston in November. Your fan base has a reputation for high basketball IQ, so I find this comment exceptionally surprising. Something I'd expect to see on the SJU board.

Glitter good homily stufff. Am in Chicago this weekend. Th homily is different but the Old Testament was about Jews complaining about being thirsty after leaving Egypt and God instructing Moses how to tap the nearby rock to make the faithful drink God’s riches. I guess Bodensteiner was absent that Day at ND when that Bible study was covered

He makes highlight reel plays on a regular basis and has had scouts on him since the beginning of his sophomore year. He has issues, his attitude and level of effort being among them, but talent isn't one.

But when you or I say it, we're not seeking out the media coverage - tv, radio, print. Maybe a single quote, but you don't air out all of the dirty laundry, not in a public fashion. It's a bad look that is avoided 99.9% of firings because common sense prevails.

I thought that article was awful. Not Pulitzer material but at least it held my interest. Every once in a while somebody will say something that will make you think. Last Wednesday at 525AM on the WIP crossover show Al Morganti said to Big Daddy Graham (regarding the firing of Phil M.): Philadelphia isn't a college basketball town anymore." Graham agreed. I am thinking they were right even though Villanova had won 2 out of the last 3 NCAA titles. Hard to believe, Harry.

But there is and always will be a fervent high school basketball scene and a Big 5 palestra game against evenly matched SJU/La Salle teams is unbeatable IMO.

I think this is partly due to the lack of student enthusiasm at the games other than on Villanova's campus. Game Day at the Palestra against Temple was a pretty big deal a few years ago and lots of students there driving the enthusiasm, but in general, student attendance at the area colleges is down, and people haven't grown up caring about these local rivalries all that much. There is barely media coverage anymore on the evening news of the city teams.
