Help me understand what Del has done for Big 5 basketball in the last three years. He acted like he had an effect on, and pulled the race card, for the Ash hire ... when we were going to hire him with or without del’s influence. Has he delivered players? Nada
Sometimes... Just saying something is enough...
Just put an idea into the atmosphere and it might actually come into being...
3 years ago there were ZERO (0) Black Head Coaches in the Catholic League, ZERO (0) Black Coaches in the City 6 and ZERO (0) Black Head Coaches at Philly D2 programs...
I pointed this out in a very vocal manner... Several HS and College Athletic Directors told me they had NEVER given this situation any thought... They did NOT realize this was the case... Several asked for names of qualified candidates...
Everyone I suggested was given an interview... That's all you can ask for, an opportunity...
Conwell-Egan HS - BBall
Cardinal O'Hara HS - BBall
West Catholic HS - BBall
Bishop McDevitt HS - BBall Hallahan - WBBall Neumann-Goretti - FBall Roman Catholic - FBall LaSalle University - BBall Temple - BBall
Have ALL hired a Black/Latino Head Coach over the past 3 seasons... Some haven't worked out and some have been Coach of the Year...
That's all you can ask for, an opportunity...
I don't think I'm driving these moves to consider Black candidates.... I do know there were ZERO (0) Black coaches at these institutions 3 years ago (LaSalle Women Hoops a notable exception)
At Ashley's Press conference, the #2 man at LaSalle University, Joe Meade let me know that he read and saw all the content I put out and he thanked me for taking a position... That's enough for me...
More recently... I had a feeling 3 weeks ago... When it was becoming obvious that SJU was gonna hire a losing Patriot League coach over Jameer and JT3 (10 NCAA appearances, Sweet 16 and Final Four)...
I understood that SJU has every right to determine that the losing Patriot League coach was "best" for them...
I figured local families might want to weigh some other options and see what's best for them...
So... I sent this text to Jameer and Jameer, Sr.
Not saying this text caused the outcome we have three weeks later...
But, I am glad I put the idea in the atmosphere!
I'm excited about the Explorers and talked to Christian Ray last night for a few minutes...

If you sent this text before he opened his recruitment there are ethical stuff with recruiting in play. I'd take it down.

If a former National Player of the Year and NBA All Star is making decisions about his son's recruiting based on an unsolicited text from Del, then it's time to stop following basketball and get interesting in curling.

I just had a "feeling"...
I had a "hunch"...
The kid and his Dad would like Jamion... I like Jamion...
Guess what? It worked out...
Love when that happens...

Every local kid offered by SJU for the foreseeable future will also receive other "equal" or better offers from schools where Blacks are considered for leadership positions...
Kids may still choose SJU, but they will know they can go to institutions with a history hiring Black Administrators, Black Athletic Directors, Black Head Coaches... They will know they can go to places where they can do something other than play and recruit other Black kids to play...
I think that is VERY fair...

There's some confusion here... I don't sneak around... If a family wants or needs options, I will find options...
I care exactly the same amount as SJU cares about how I feel...

Soon as you launch the Asian or Women's campaign, I'll be the first to volunteer...
Sooooo.... A school plays basketball for 110 years... Relies heavily on Black players... Never had a Black Head Coach... Does NOT have 1 Black Administrator in the university... Does NOT have one Black administrator in the Athletic Department...
I say... "Hey, you should have at least ONE (1) Black in a leadership position."
You say... "Your focus seems racist and non-inclusive."
I say... Sh!t... I dunno what to say to that...

Historically, there's always been too many Asians and women on the SJU Men's BBall team anyway...
They are waaaaaay overrepresented

Players: 56% Coaches: 23%
There's no legit counter-arguments here.

Players: 56% Coaches: 23% There's no legit counter-arguments here. Correct. If Asian / transgender basketball players/coaches started to mirror those numbers then that would be an issue of concern.

It should be pointed out that the administrator being lobbied to consider people like Jeff Arnold, Bruiser Flint and Jameer Nelson to replace Martelli is a woman who apparently told the first 2 not to bother to apply. Given that these 3 mentioned are all Delco natives I suspect that Del has a relationship with them that goes back to their HS days. It is only natural to try to promote them and others like them. SJU has dented the glass ceiling so give him a break on lobbying for women. Let him focus on people of color for leadership positions.

If you sent this text before he opened his recruitment there are ethical stuff with recruiting in play. I'd take it down. I think we were the guinea pig population for this actual text getting broadcast on 247sports.com/college/saint-josephs at approx. 1:30 this afternoon, six hours after we got to see it. How receptive do you think they're being over there?
I'm not naïve enough to think that these kind of random texts are not commonplace. I just don't understand why posting it publicly does anything other than invite criticism and speculation. It's at the very least a gray area. I've restrained myself from sending my own cousin a shirt while he was being contacted by coaches at another school lest someone interpret it as a recruiting violation.
The specific rule, for the otherwise unacquainted: www.ncaa.org/enforcement/role-boosters
Only institutional staff members are permitted to recruit prospective student-athletes. Generally, NCAA rules prohibit anyone else from contacting (calling, writing or in-person contact) prospects or the prospect’s relatives or guardian for recruiting purposes.
Students are still considered prospects even if they have signed a National Letter of Intent or any other financial aid agreement with a university.

Except... I do it for dozens of schools... I suggest kids consider La Salle, Temple, Maryland, Syracuse, Washington, George Washington, Rider, Binghamton and many, many others...
The NCAA does not govern me... I can say what I want... When i want and how I want...
This is still the USA...
No one can tell me I can't recommend Lincoln and Doug Overton... I did it this past weekend!!
I actually have pictures if you want to see them...
No school or coach directs me to do anything... Parents ask who may be interested... I provide answers based on my understanding of the coach's recruiting patterns in the past...
I've know Jameer Jr since he was a "rumor"... I can say whatever i want to the kid...
NCAA "control" is widespread and growing... But it will never encompass my actions

Being a go between for coaches and players won’t get you in trouble. It will get them in trouble. There are messaging rules. Contacting rules. I appreciate you looking out for kids, but there are rules and you’re right up against them.

Nothing in your response did anything to address or counter my original questions. There’s a lot of words, more hot air and no proof that you caused a player to commit to GW. BTW, GW is not in the Big 5 so regardless of what you may or may not have done it only shows that you have done something to hurt not help the Big 5. If you are in this just to be a good guy and a solid Boy Scout leader just helping kids, great. All you have to do is say in writing (here, on the Hawks board or any other Big 5 board) that you have no direct or indirect current or future financial interest in any of your so called coach introductions/recommendations or player consultations or recommendations. If you can say that, I won’t say a peep about your posts. If you can’t I’m calling BS on you and all you say. As you say, this is America.

People who need to name drop about those with whom they talk and text, generally don't have any influence with those individuals. Notice in the graphic he posted there was no reply back. That's what's so comical...it's like a continual attempt to prove his relevance and worth by playing the same old song...to free message boards of all places.

Meanwhile...St. John's is STILL without a coach, and the program is in shambles (if you listen to Big Mike). Coaching prospects are thinning out. Do they at least give Phil a call to gauge his interest? Joe Mihalick? Dunphy, to see if he can get the program back on track (yeah, I'm aware of the age factor for all three of them). How about...dare I say it...G??? All have experience coaching a small level Catholic U. 3 of them aren't coaching.
