And now some context to Phil's demeanor, I just read that his father passed away today. Thoughts and prayers to the Martelli family

Just a bit of "what I did at work today", I'm digging through some old box scores for a piece on this year's city series, and I go back to check out the numbers from Nova's last Big 5 loss before the Penn game, from December 5th, 2012. College basketball reference, displaying the other scores from the big east and Atlantic 10 from that day, show the score from your guys' game, an absolute drubbing of Penn State 82-57. Hoping to find highlights of Penn State getting clobbered at Gola (I assume it was Gola, but I can't find confirmation that it wasn't at the Palestra or something), I head to YouTube. No highlights from that game, but I found Pat Chambers' presser, and he immediately said pretty much the same exact thing Martelli did on Tuesday, that he didn't think La Salle was gonna shoot as well as they did.
Why do coaches think not defending the 3 is a good excuse to get blown out?

I think that was the Palestra and it was the game that a walkon hit a three at the buzzer.
Chambers lost his shit.

Why do coaches think not defending the 3 is a good excuse to get blown out? Martelli said something like Duren would not shoot as well as he did when La Salle beat him. He (Martelli) always does things like that. That's why he is so well liked on this board. I heard Joe Lunardi on the post game wrap up. Two things struck me. First he said "Ashley won't be happy with the defense tonight." I think he was referring to the 3 point shooting. It could not be the fact that the La Salle defense held the Hawks to under 70 in a 14 point loss or that the defense inside the arc was 12-33. Second, he said (I'm paraphrasing) correctly that " La Salle has built their league win total against the league bottom feeders." Hey Joe, I know you try to put La Salle down every time you can but SJU (PA) is a bottom feeder. Martucci the play-by-play guy had a nice compliment I want to point out. He said " the way La Salle has turned it around come March they will be a tough team to play and will knock someone off." One last thing, I was thinking Martelli would blow a gasket when Saul took that 3 point attempt with a few seconds left on the shot clock and the game.

JB we were a bit soft defending the 3 ball. Lorenzo Edwards has a career night and Brown hit a bunch of threes. We were giving up well over 50% from 3 land all night. Edwards was 6-6. Holstein has 3-6 and Funk 2-4. 54% for night from 3

Bottom feeder Richmond beat GMU on Wednesday, and bottom feeder Fordham pounded bottom feeder UMASS as well. Can't take the bottom feeders lightly, and get a W when you can against them. Any team on any night if your not prepared.

Well said 83. Probably two teams will separate from the pack as records go but there is a pretty good chance the rest of the league will beat up itself the rest of the way. 11 wins could get you a double bye this year.

Holstein has 3-6 and Funk 2-4. 54% for night from 3 I know that. It was one of those nights where BOTH teams were red hot from 3. It happens. Ashley didn't say " well we didn't think Edwards would make four more three's than he ever did in his life." BTW, Funk has been in a shooting "funk" for a while. I have no inside knowledge of the game plan but I would bet it was "stop Brown and maybe Clover and let the other try to beat us." The bigger point is sour grapes. An announcer saying the HC won't be happy with the defense where his team held you under 70 and you lost by 14 is just throwing cover for the poor play of HIS team. PS/OT I thought it was outstanding defense that La Salle did not foul. SJU (PA) 3-5 from the line. PS/OT2 Not often you see two Final Four caliber level referees do a game at Gola. Ayers and Gaffney. Not sure they will be there this year. They looked confused most of the night. Not sure of the call. Looking to each other for confirmation.

JB, I agree it was a douchey comment. Probably fair game in a 3 point loss but not a double digit one. Having said that, I looked at the scoreboard throughout the game and Joes were shooting in mid-60 %s from 3 much of the night.
From what I saw I think the D focus was to: faceguard or deny Brown; cover Bynum with a blanket so he couldn't kick it for open 3 looks; and contain Funk from 3. A fair amount of help was lent by other players for those three, meaning Holston and Edwards were left fairly open. Hey, they made shots, but the plan worked and we won. BTW, Clover was left open in the corner most of the night with a defender cheating in the lane for Bynum drives. That worked. Clover had little impact and may have made a late 3 but it was meaningless. BTW, Clover is a BIG dude. Much bigger in person than he appears on TV.

something that's not being talked about much is reduced turnovers. after the slu game, this team was averaging 15.4 turnovers a game. in the last 6 games, they only averaged 11.5. so in addition to the improved defense, our opponents are getting 4 less possessions a game.
that is huge.

The seeds were planted and now we are seeing green shoots ( improved defense, lower turnovers, less fouls, team chemistry, improved play from guys like Beatty and the young big guys).

I noticed this around Christmas and have been keeping tabs on it ever since. It's remarkable how much staying out of foul trouble correlates to La salle winning basketball games. 7-1 when fouling fewer than 20 times, 0-13 when fouling 20 or more times. And that one loss was against GW, which I didn't watch, but i heard you guys had it and it slipped away. Also what that means is that in the last 11 games, you guys have committed under 20 fouls 8 times, as opposed to zero times in the first 10 games. That's an incredible turnaround.

New SJU ad campaign spotted - "Part City. Part Suburbs. All Saint Joseph's."
Sju.edu/flyhigher or atleast high enough to dissociate yourself with the city.

Does this count as them plagiarizing me? If there's one thing kids these days crave, its that authentic suburban experience with a Philadelphia zip code that only City Line Avenue can provide.

The irony is undeniable. St Joe's has become a parody of St Joe's of Penna.

Just a quick note to durenduren and Gnocchi :
It is becoming rather burdensome to click "Like" for each and every one of your posts. I want you to understand that I do it due to the high level of inspiration in creating your avatars. It does not necessarily indicate that I like the quality of the posts themselves. It is just something that I feel I must do in appreciation of the G video and the birdhoue.
So don't get swelled heads about this as I continue to do it. Thank You.
