Jellybean seems to think the school is well aware of the negative attention out facilities are getting nationally but that the wheels were creeping along slowly even before that. To me, bringing in Jim Gulick was a sign there was a serious move being made for securing major funds. After success like this and hopefully similar success next year, the school cannot afford to take a step back as a result of circumstances completely within their control Hoops or anyone else......please tell me just what Jim Gullick has done to warrant praise and or hope something will get done? Frankly I have been very unimpressed with him. I don't believe the school has an urgency to get something done. I have been hearing this for a few years and nothing has happened. Until I see it happen I just don't believe it. Naturally I second this. Heck his primary interest was to become the school's track coach not this

Towson's arena cool pictures of the current construction Gary Neal, third from left, joined Towson University officials Tuesday in breaking ground on the school's new $62 million arena. Without the caption it would've been tricky to figure which guy was Gary...

I can't speak to Gulick's achievements. To me it was more the fact that they created a position specifically to fundraise for athletics as a major step. In the past, the position seemed to have additional responsibilities not related to fundraising whereas it now seems to be the only function.

Is the position soley for raising funds for an arena or is it tied to other aspects of the department? That makes a big difference. Either way, after 2 years or so we can't see one shred of evidence anything has changed with regard to the facility. To me that is all that matters.

I can see your larger point regarding a renovation/new construction not seemingly being any closer to fruition. However, I don't know that it's fair to say nothing has changed with regard to the current facility. The scoreboards are really classy, and in general I've noticed newer banners, posters, and photos around the Arena that give it a nice look. I think our blue and gold branding really shows well on TV, albeit in a lame gym.

Rosey, you are correct. I was only considering the physical structure.

In a proper environment the perpheral branding things the school has done really would sell well on TV. Like I said, I ahve no knowledge of the man's achievements or lack thereof I can only speculate that creating a position in the athletic department that is specifically as a fundraiser is a step in the right direction. I don't remember when he came on baord but I thought he was around for the Science Center funding, but I could be wrong.
The money they raised for that building would make for the perfect facility for basketball.

Here's the thing that I don't get. If the business school is next up for fundraising, then what is this guy really doing over in the Athletic Dept? You're looking at a good 7 years at least before they'd pull the trigger on groundbreaking for a new areana if they're doing the biz school next. I can see maybe 3 years from now turning him loose to find some donors for the arena, but who would donate now for something an easy 7 years away? Could it be that he's scaring up funds for a renovation of Gola instead?

He is not Terry Travis or Brian Elderton, the head leaders charged with fundraising money for the university and/or "priority projects".

Jim Gulick has been in this job for 1 year and 3 months. I have no idea what kind of job he's been doing.
And neither does anyone else on here.
But I do know that there has been at worst a fairly significant increase in donations to the athletic department. Those words came right out of the mouth of someone from the athletic department in the recent past.
Has Gulick made progress in landing any big-money donors yet? Maybe he has or maybe he hasn't, but I assume that can be a long, drawn-out process. And again, no one here knows this information either.
Better yet, the guy sits in the first few rows of W3 for every game, willing to talk to anyone who will listen. Before people start ripping him, why not strike up a conversation with him and ask how things are going. I assume much of what he works on is confidential, but he would probably be willing to give anyone who cares a general update on the progress they're making.

I did talk to him at the auction and he never asked my name or anything about me. Maybe it is me, but I think he should have at least engaged me enough to ask that.

the law firm of Katz and Greenburg need to STFU, and focus more on the games instead of the facilities. It is what it is. Its a small school, small enrollment in an urban neighborhood attended by a fair share of commuters. We don't have deep pockets, and we're not a state institution. We can't build a Dean Dome at the drop of a dime. When the Gola is packed and rockin like it was against Butler, it looks like any other Small College facility. We just need to keep playing competitive basketball and conitnue to pile up the wins. Anybody ever been to the Carrier Dome? One of the ugliest venues for college bball. But nobody notices because the place is always packed, the team wins, and they have a huge following. Otherwise, it a hell hole.

This facilities discussion is just ruining any good feeling I was having from the last week. It's depressing and not worth bringing up.
It came up organically in my opinion, and it contained to the one thread. All the national stories this week have mentioned the arena, which gives ammo to the fact that its not just us malcontents on this message board who are harping on it.

We don't have deep pockets, and we're not a state institution. I think alumni pockets are deeper than we give them credit for. I think they just need to be approached in a thoughtful and positive way; a winning tournament caliber team also helps.

Boring might have been the wrong word. What I meant to say is that the Liacouris Center has no personality. It's bland. There's no atmosphere. I like Gola and the intimate small time feel. To force an analogy: I love my condo but we have a kid now and the condo just doesn't cut it any more.
