So I am not an ardent follower of the team anymore, but I check results weekly. A10s was this week and while La Salle is never going to win a track title, we always were able to finish relatively high as a team.
Is La Salle no longer a distance school? Nobody ran at Distance Night at Penn Relays, an event that usually consisted of a dozen runners easy.
At A10s, La Salle's distance runners did the following:
• 4x800 Won in 7:28. Good run. • 800m went 1-3. Great job. • 1500m. Top finisher was 15th • 3000m Steeple - No runners • 5000m - Fran Feruzzi grabbed 8th • 10000 - Lone runner dropped out
The team scored 33 points. I know there are some track guys on here. What gives? I asked a couple people I ran with but nobody follows much anymore.

I believe that it could be a coaching, recruiting problem. BB has made it clear to all coaches they must win, track should be on notice. Perhaps the terrible, perennial A10 bottom feeder standings over the last several years affects track alum caring. See men’s basketball energy among alums after AH hired.

There are five former alums coaching at either elite high school or ncaa level. Didn’t like the hire from the jump. They were in a bad spot with Ireland leaving but just removing the interim tag was quintessential birdhouse.

I think you can cross off Temple's Eric Mobley from any potential list of candidates in the future.

Congratulations to Grace Mancini who qualified for NCAA Regionals for her time in the 3k Steeplechase. Plus shattering the school record in that race. I believe it was her second or third time running the event in college.

Dumb question, but is there NCAA Units outside of basketball, and I presume football? If so, anyone know how they work?

Dumb question, but is there NCAA Units outside of basketball, and I presume football? If so, anyone know how they work? It is not a dumb question. Basketball is an anomaly, because the revenue generated by TV. The other sports do get participation points but not really based on performance. It is based on how many sports you sponsor. It helps fund academic support and offset travel costs, and to a great extent it seems subsidized by revenue sports because the TV aspect only exists for some power confs like the big ten, or SEC as that gets ESPN money, as well as the national finals in each of the respective sports. www.ncaa.org/about/resources/finances/distributions

On the subject of Men's track, I recently saw a La Salle trivia question indicating that the 1950 track team won La Salle's first national championship. Basketball 1954 and Field Hockey 1980 are the only others I know of, not sure if I missed any.

Hykos, I was surprised to see you list La Salle as having a 1950 National Championship for Track and Field. Best I can find is that La Salle won the 1950 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Outdoor Track Championship (in subsequent years, as well), but not a National Championship. The NCAA lists Southern California (USC) as the 1950 Outdoor Champions. There were no listings for Indoor Champions prior to 1965, so I am presuming there weren't any until that time. In a 01/14/2011 goexplorers.com post about prominent La Salle Athletes of the 1950s, in describing the legendary Jim Tuppeny, the 1950 Track and Field team was described as having achieved "the first conference title ever won by an Explorer team." Perhaps that's what you saw/read somewhere. John Uelses is the only individual Track and Field NCAA National Champion (1964, Pole Vault) from La Salle, although two other La Salle Track and Field athletes were Olympians (Ira Davis in 1956, 1960 & 1964; and Al Cantello in 1960). Uelses (first to go over 16 feet in the Pole Vault) and Cantello (Javelin), were world record holders!! Uelses - YouTube video - breaking 16 Ft. 'barrier' indoorsUelses - YouTube video - outdoors, setting the official world record of 16' 3/4"Cantello - YouTube video - brief bio & clips

Yeah I’d never heard of a national championship. Cantello became a super successful cross country coach at Navy and good friend to Charles Torpey. Two peas, those guys.

I'm glad this has been clarified. The source said La Salle College won its first team championship in this sport in 1950. I read the word national into it, but I now see it wasn't there.

Joe it looked to me he might have injured himself slightly just before the final curve. Do you think so too?

Joe it looked to me he might have injured himself slightly just before the final curve. Do you think so too? Having been in enough races where the winners were going to be seconds ahead of my PR and in the half you only get one move. I didn't see a limp, but the move was at 250m not 200 and he got closed in. Once the Indiana guy got him, the muscles tightened.

I did notice what you were saying at 250 meters but didn't describe it as well as you did.

Congrats to the Men's Cross Country team and the Women's Cross Country team for their finishes at A10 Championships in Richmond. The Men finished second with Kedir and James making All-Conference. The Women finished fourth with Grace Mancini and her sister Liz making All-Conference. Liz took home the Conference Most Outstanding Rookie Performer.

Congratulations to Grace Mancini for placing second at Regionals and qualifying for Nationals on Nov. 17th at Madison WI. Her two sisters Liz (finished #30) and Eleanor (#88) did well. There is one more Mancini running as a HS SR at O'Hara. Parents must be very proud.
The team finished 11th.
Special acknowledge to RS SR Megan Connell who finished her XC career. As a FR, she represented the USA at Junior Nationals but suffered injuries for much of her career. Great to persevere.
The Men finished 7th overall with 3 Top 50 finishers and another 3 in the Top 100.
Congratulations to the coaches and athletes. Good Luck to Grace Mancini.

Fantastic run by Mancini. She'll compete for a top 25 spot at Nationals if she runs like that.
Good run for the men.
