...and this resurfaced for what reason...? For no good reason. We have all been excited about our prospects, as recently as about three weeks ago when Ash grabbed another A10 upset (Richmond) and another recruit. And 90%+ of us were excited by this hire in 2018. They hired who all the people wanted, not just one person wanted. So no, it is not fair to use this sad moment to resurface a petty argument from 3 years ago. We are in a very bad place right now but we can I'll afford to lose supporters to more infighting. And then, it'll be so convenient to blame "the administration" for lack of alum engagement and fundraising while the actual disengagement was being born and bred here.

It resurfaced because I was truly curious on Del's take. As a self-professed expert on basketball and the recruits and the coach and the local scene, Del gushed over Ash's hiring. Del also said Hikim was an amazing get, and Moore would be a 2x all conference player under Ash.
Now, given that the Ash hire hasn't yielded the type of results we expected,we don't have an all conference Moore, and Hikim is gone, I'm left to conclude one of the following:
A) Del's ability to evaluate talent isn't really that good. B) Del's gushing over Ash was premature and he really isn't good at evaluating coaches C) all of the above
That being said, I'm curious how the guy who put himself out there in multuple formats and said 20th and Olney will be every local recruits first stop thanks to Ash is seeing things now. He has been eerily quiet on Ash's performance.
I guess I want to hear from the "expert".

No, you weren't curious, this bumped thread is a "gotcha" moment.
Yesterday some of the guys played like they couldn't wait for this season to be over. One particular guy, who it seems is unhappy with his place in the depth chart and whose good performances have been sporadic only, we learned is auditioning for other programs. (He, unlike Eddie is not going to the big east.) I know it is Ash's job and I know a lot of experts have pointed out how "re-recruiting your own players" is now a bigger part of the equation for all coaches than it was when the sit out year disincentivized bailing on a struggling program. But as soon as the transfer eligibility change came up, we knew this would be a challenge for any La Salle coach, so let's stop pretending it's Ash's specific failure that he brought in with him. We did the same exact thing to G on this board, and I would think now a lot of us could realize something, that you can replace the coach, you can replace the facility, you can switch conferences, that doesn't just turn you into a powerhouse program overnight. Look, Temple has done all three of these things! I don't see them sniffing an NIT bid this year, either.

I think when people leave the board, you are in denial about why it happens. You assume it is because we had a losing season and they will come back as soon as we win 20 games. Nope, this place just simply does not foster LS supporters, it chews them up and disengages them, quite intentionally I must say. There is no subtlety when it happens. I have found that my most insightful conversations with Del have occurred via the message feature. This isn’t a way to facilitate constructive dialogue. (I know I don’t believe I said that either...) .

Was his performance sporadic (or, one could argue, that of the whole team) because of his playing abilities...or because he wasn't being used properly by the person being paid $400K a year to figure out how to get the best out of all HIS players. I think it's the latter, but I am truly curious on phillyhoops4life 's take .

I think we have got to cut Del a break. He thought Ash was a great choice like every one of us.
It just hasn't worked out. The real question is how quickly can this be rectified?
Ash is in deep trouble. He needs to think quickly how to best plug the holes from a sinking ship. He actually could benefit from the new rules. In past years, a coach in the last years of his contract with a bad team and player exodus was doomed. However this Spring and Summer there could be as many as 2,000 transfers available to choose from.
Many of those transfers will be experienced unlike previous years and like every year players who want to be "the man" and those who want to lead and score the ball will have plenty of opportunity at 20th and Olney.
Question is whether Ash can convince the better players to come and can he evaluate talent and find the diamonds in the rough that La Salle so desperately needs to find to compete.

This is fine and I don't want people to leave either, but just because you give a million dollars and have a seat-back does not mean you get to control dialog on the board. In the first conversation I had with Colleen regarding this board, it was about how the only thing that the moderators will do will be to keep things civil and respectful. And I would not steer conversations to be "rosier" for the school that I thought were made in good faith. We had other conversations along those lines and I would often keep a closer eye on the actual language being used, but that's it. We try our best, but there are some people that do their best to blur that line. They have been warned, put on suspension or banned outright in two cases. This is the internet and it's the anonymous internet, for the majority of this board. People are going to say things that are wrong and other people should be able to correct them. Debate should occur. if high-dollar donors are turned off by the negativity surrounding a team that has 5 winning seasons in 25 years...perhaps debate is not what they're looking for.

If four people have logged off permanently because they didn't like it here, I'd contend maybe they shouldn't have been on here in the first place, or didn't really understand how this works. There are a lot of donors on here still, and I know donors who don't have accounts but come on here and read stuff. As for Colleen, I always thought it was a bad look that she posted on here. Do you think the Presidents of other local schools are on fan boards? I'd rather her have been perusing resources on increasing enrollment (at its lowest in years) and raising money than seeing the latest arguments about which defense we should play, what recruits we should go after, and how we have a ridiculous amount of turnovers and poor foul shooting. No one is forcing you to be here and post. A message board, by its nature, has people that express opinions, and differing opinions, and presents a medium for arguing, discussion, debate, etc...sometimes not in the nicest or most civilized way. If you want to start a board where everyone holds hands and is all rainbows and unicorns about Ash and the future of La Salle basketball, have at it.

My thoughts on the predicament faced by La Salle (St. Joe's, Drexel and Temple) have been clearly spelled out... Every single game that is played features a losing coach. Indeed, I watched Speedy lead the Explorers to 8 straight losing seasons... I watched Dr. G struggle year after... Coach Howard was clearly among the best qualified for the job when it opened up... I applaud La Salle for hiring it's 1st Black Mens Basketball coach 3 years ago... As for what ails the program? Here are my thoughts.... delgrecowilson.com/2020/03/14/the-big-10s-successful-attack-on-philly-mid-majors/

I think Ash has done a decent job recruiting, especially locally... Ray, Brickus, Clark, Beatty, Croswell, Ward are all local kids...
Like nearly very other program in America, Ash is experiencing some difficulty managing his roster... Specifically, retaining kids has become especially challenging...
I've seen Ash's team play intense defense some games... I've seen them compete with the best in the A10 at times...
There have also been moments where the team looks disinterested and, perhaps even, dysfunctional... Kids leaving a team during a season is NEVER a good look...
My entire argument was that he was a highly qualified candidate for the job when it opened... I respect the decision to make him the first Black head coach in the history of La Salle University basketball... I also respect the subsequent decision to hire a Black AD at La Salle...
The point... Is NOT that Black Coaches are inherently better or will win championships... The point is that candidates should NOT be excluded because they are Black... La Salle has demonstrated a willingness to install Blacks and women into leadership positions...
Kudos to La Salle...
If a President, AD, Coach or any other employee fails to meet established expectations in their level of performance intense scrutiny is warranted...
Overall, I think Ash has been OK... I'd give him a C or C+...

Ashley Howard is a friend and has been so for 20+ years...
The La Salle job is very challenging... In order to truly compete you have to recruit at the same level as Penn St, Rutgers, Temple, Seton Hall, VCU, Dayton...
Tough, tough task for the Explorer program...
On multiple occasions, Ash and his staff rumble only to come up short when fighting the BIG BOYS for a prized recruit...
Most recently, Taquan Woodley came down to La Salle, Georgia and South Carolina...
Where would YOU rather play? Would you like a $300 per month stipend or a $3,000 per month stipend? Would you rather fly commercial or private? Would you rather play in front of 1,500 or 15,000?
Tough, tough job...

As I said in another thread, no matter how this plays out, Ashley Howard was the right hire, and I was immensely proud of my school for making that hire almost 3 years ago. Nobody should be excluded from a seat at the table because of what they look like, and I'm proud that La Salle gave Ash an opportunity, and I'm rooting like crazy for him to get it right.
Last year was a step in the right direction. This year was a head scratcher.

I am stuck between D+ and C-. The St Joe's losses prevent me from going any higher (fresh in memory and so painful). I am not anywhere near thinking the coach should go (or an F) like some here seem to be. Would love to see a clear eyed analysis of why the team had so much inconsistent execution. This definitely factored in to my grading.

I think Del's article in the blackcager which stated it's the big guys and then the rest of us sums up the problem for the mid majors. 4 of the 5 city teams that played this year had losing records. The Power 5 and Big East will soon be the only DI programs with the rest of the country being DI(A). The transfer rules and cost of attendance have two effects, one helps kids share in the money and find the right fit after making a bad original choice but also makes it easier for them to get the best kids. We have some talented players but do we even have one complete player. Why do kids choose LaSalle or StJoe's when cost of attendance money is much lower and facilities are lacking. How many of our kids chose us when they had legitimate offers from the big 6 conferences? The transfers from big conferences that come back to mid majors almost always do so because they are not playing at the big school. Now with the transfer rules if a kid has a big year at a mid majors, the bigs will grab him through the transfer portal. Big schools worry about one and done, mids worry about one and gone. Posters will compare us to St. Bonaventure and ask why we can't do what they do. I think to understand that we have to look at the administration. If we can't give Ash a better facility at least let him recruit jucos and CC players. We have had two good years in what seems like forever under 4 different coaches. I would give Ash at least two more recruiting classes and let him recruit from every available resource. Losing has become systemic here and to change that everyone from the President on down has to be all in.

If you give him two years you have to pay him for three and you push the tear down and rebuild back. Yes, it is much harder for mid majors now. Bottom line is you commit to complete within this conference or leave. You have to compete within the conference that you are in. La Salle can't be one foot in and one foot out. As far as recruiting, since the 1980's La Salle has had to find under-recruited players and diamonds in the rough. Develop players. I could care less if the players come from Philly or not like Del gives props for. Philly does not have enough talent to sustain the local college landscape. La Salle must recruit the globe for players. Our problems are often self-inflicted. From G to Ash the playing time and distribution of minutes has been perplexing for me. We do not commit to a system and recruit just those players to excel in that system. I think that is only way we can compete anymore. No way Ash leaves now but when we do make a change I am only on board with hiring a successful lower level coach that plays his system and can recruit those players to fit that system. Any one else I think cannot sustain a competitive program in this college basketball landscape.

I hold out hope that next year he's able to start moving the program forward again. If we're looking at the same type of record next year, then I would say we have a problem.

As far as recruiting, since the 1980's La Salle has had to find under-recruited players and diamonds in the rough. Come on. In the 80s and 90s how many Philadelphia kids chose La Salle despite higher offers. That just doesn't really happen anymore, and certainly not at the Simmons/Butler level.

Problem is...bringing in that talent is only the first step. Developing that talent and getting them to execute becomes the more important aspect of the job once they are here. I think this team had the pieces in their players to be a 0.500 A-10 team if the pieces were put together the right way. This team underachieved this season. If you are seeing the players, as we all have, looking disinterested and even dysfunctional in the games, what do you attribute that to? Is it the kinds of players he is recruiting aren't the right character? Are he and his staff not being effective as motivators to keep the players engaged and focused? Is it an Xs and Os problem? Is it that Ash is not a good practice coach or game-day coach when we see mistakes repeated? What am I missing about Ash's ability, in his job as head coach, to get the team of good recruits..his recruits that he seemingly brought in to run his system...to perform to the level they are capable of as a team? Is the grade of C for his recruiting, for his player development, for his game-day coaching?

I'm not speaking to any individual recruit, past or current, but if you have the option to go above La Salle and choose La Salle, it might be because you see yourself as a focal point and not a complimentary piece. I imagine its hard for a coach to really know how those dynamics will play out and if kids don't mesh, it leads to a less-than-a-sum-of-their-parts situation.
To use our favorite guy here, one Ryan Daly worked out for St. Joseph's of PA. I'm thinking three Ryan Daly's wouldn't.

La Salle's bread and butter should be the Jhamir Brickus/Christian Ray/Daeshon Shepherd types. The local kids that are 2* and maybe a 3* recruit that just gets overlooked. I would recruit those kids exclusively. And then you try to bring in a higher rated transfer who wants to come down. Does this win you a national title? No. But the cohesion should make you competitive. There is so much talent in this area that goes under-recruited or overlooked. Tap into that. Stop trying to get kids who are only angry it didn't work out at a higher level.

Hartford was the only D1 offer he had in high school, which I believed he accepted and then rolled back his commitment. Delaware got involved late in the game, Daly goes to UD, plays well for 2 years, and decides he's too big for Newark. He ends up at St. Joes, and has a productive career individually. The dude did leap frog 2 schools that showed him love when nobody was interested in him.

The recruiting is complicated for mid majors. If you get too many kids who are decent recruits they all expect to play starter minutes and when they don't they look elsewhere. I understand that kids want to play but it makes it difficult for schools like ours to have depth. Coaches at mid majors sell playing time but if someone better comes in then the minutes aren't there. I don't believe Ayinde transferred because of Ash, I believe he transferred because of Brickus. I understand but it makes it difficult to get a strong backup pg. It's difficult to convince a kid who was all league in High School that 12 minutes a game should be enough for him especially when his high school gym was bigger and had better crowds. These are tough times for the smaller mid majors.

I think it is Ryans Daly as the plural. Like Attorneys General. This makes sense to me as a recruiting plan. Per this year, to get these guys to gel particularly when you are dealing with a lot of new guys so to speak as a nucleus, you likely need a solid preseason, that preseason time to practice/drill. Arguably a greater need, it becomes maybe more important? This was a largely missing piece this year that I am giving a lot of consideration to when assessing the utterly disappointing outcome. I think this is one of Lunatic's major points.
