Think you are missing Bobby and KJ's point. The story hasn't fully developed to where we have actual proven facts from both sides. The point is that the reflexive action of mocking one of our own and making fun of a pretty serious circumstance that could have an impact on his life and career without knowing all of the facts is pretty shitty. Absolutely not missing the point and I agree. You can see my first statement above; it wasn't the usual sarcasm and it certainly wasn't assumption of guilt, but it also wasn't a defense, and that's all for a reason. I don't know Overton just as much as I don't know any other former college basketball player or most any other person in the world. Circling the wagons and reflexively defending or absolving someone because he used to score baskets for us is no better than mocking it away or convicting him. If you know Doug personally, by all means this is a different situation. If your sole reason for defending him and questioning the accuser(s) is because he's a La Salle basketball alum, that strikes me as a serious problem. Bobby obviously knows him personally. I don't and I was not "reflexively defending or absolving" him nor was I "questioning the accuser(s)" but I think it is shitty to reflexively mock him (as others have done, not you) particularly because, at least by all objective evidence, he has represented himself and the school very well. I think he has earned the benefit of the doubt until we have all of the facts.

If you know Doug personally, by all means this is a different situation. If your sole reason for defending him and questioning the accuser(s) is because he's a La Salle basketball alum, that strikes me as a serious problem. Bobby knows Doug personally. I know some people that know Doug personally. I've met and spoken to him on a handful of occasions over the years but don't know him well enough to personally evaluate his character, but he was nothing but kind and courteous to me. I have a very hard time believing he's some deranged flasher because I value the opinion of Bobby and the people I know who know Doug well. And as far as I know, there's nothing in Doug's background that would lead you to believe he'd do something like this. I just think it sucks that people on here felt the need to make a joke out of a situation that could ruin the life of a fellow Lasallian before all the facts are in. And I see the jokes are still coming too. That's great. Maybe next season when Doug is at a game, you should stop and introduce yourself and do your stand-up routine for him. Believe me, I'm no prude when it comes to things that make me laugh, but I just thought it was uncalled for. I don't blame Bobby for lashing out. He's been close friends and like a brother to Doug for 30+ years. I'd do the same if it was someone close to me. If he did do it, it's just plain sad and he needs help and will have to deal with the aftermath. But I just don't see it.

I'm not making a judgment call either way, and lets even detach this from Overton and apply it more universally, but its probably worth remembering the fable of Kirby Puckett. Or Bill Cosby. Or (long list of "I just can't believe s/he would have done this" celebrities). And there is, without a doubt, harm in that viewpoint if you don't have a personal relationship or only have a tangential one; it actively discourages victims.

Here is what the idiot reporter didn't print. Doug was walking his dog (the reason he was there in the first place) and needed to take a leak so he went off of the trail to do so. So why not embellish the story with false accusations. The read has him looking like some fucking predator/pervert which is not the case. Some folks don't want philly folks crossing into the county anyhow so why not make that claim. But the big issue is that they pick the wrong one to mess with. Known him for 32 years and this is not him nor has it ever been him in this light.

I think that this is the thread that has finally pushed me over the edge and I will be logging off for good. I am not sure how any alum or fan of La Salle could see this thread or many others as anything positive at all for the university. I think that all would be smart to listen to the wisdom of your mother who told you that if you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all.

This is such a sad situation. We all need to let this unfold before casting stones. I lived next to Doug Overton in the townhouses for a year and I can tell you it would be difficult to find a more standup guy. He was friendly and extremely approachable with always a smile on his face. This incident does not sound at all like Doug. He played 4 years at LaSalle and 11 in the NBA and never once was there a bad word written about him. He kept clean and thats just the person I remember.

I think we do a fairly decent job of letting people say their piece, but sometimes things get a little out of hand and something needs to be done. I won't apologize for that.

That take misses the fact that nobody local outside of about 250 people could pick Doug Overton out of a lineup. I 100% agree that this screams of racism, or at least racist tendencies. A black guy relieving himself in a majority white area was probably scary to whomever called the cops. But let's not act like Doug Overton is a household name/face. He would be to us and some others, but that is about it.

What I found odd. There was an update on the story on Wednesday. The update contained info that was shocking (no need to repeat as it sounded outlandish) That piece of information was quickly removed from the news story. Gave me pause about how this was all reported locally and how it's a rat race to be first to report.

Before anyone over reacts and this goes too far, I would think most people would agree with your view that this was racially motivated. But nobody (relatively) knows who Doug Overton is, so his decades of good character doesn't mean anything except to prove that this is probably baloney to those that know of that character.

That take misses the fact that nobody local outside of about 250 people could pick Doug Overton out of a lineup. It also misses the good damn space in La_Salle. But I digress. I bike that trail often, it's literally on the Philly border, opposite of Manayunk and nestled in between City Ave. Seeing a black man isn't uncommon, so let's not act like we're deep in the Main Line. The racism argument only goes so far IMO. I respect it, but you don't get multiple witnesses citing some veey, very specific details unless there's some serious credence to their claims. One even said she saw him before and recognized him, but his actions weren't normal this time obviously... Who's to say the witnesses are white, anyway? But Delgreco's take also works off the same flawed logic that royally screwed Bill Cosby and Jerry Sandusky doubters... "But he's a good guy, and he never did anything before... Here's his basketball stats to prove how great he's been..." I'm not saying Overbrook is a pervert, but I'm also saying NONE OF US ACTUALLY KNOW. You think you do, but I think there's multiple (and I mean multiple witnesses) that gave detailed reports that don't exactly match the "just taking a leak on the side of a trail" narrative. No one thought Cosby could actually be a rapist, but look how that's playing out... And no one thought Sandusky and his non-profit was a vehicle to molest little kids, but shocker... No one actually knew who the real Cosby or Sandusky was, even close friends and associates. Penn State sure regrets doubting the claims based off his assumed 'outstanding' character, and now they've settled on $23 million fine for their mistakes. I get this is a very personal topic for some, and I respect that, but it's a dangerous game to write it off. It's also dangerous to damn him to hell until all the facts come to light.
