Let's level up though -- it's a pipe dream -- especially when you're assessing academic programs and laying off employees. Hopefully we're looking at more efficient and higher return spending as the solution and not just eliminating spending.

Hopefully we're looking at more efficient and higher return spending as the solution and not just eliminating spending. I don't think that's too much to ask for. I think the University-wide rebranding that was talked about during the President's Tour speeches shows that it's acknowledged they understand you need to spend money to get a return. Not sure how many big projects they'd do in that rebranding/marketing realm at once. My gut says this is a project for the next AD, sans the interim title, but in the realm of possibility.

I disagree with that sentiment from this standpoint - Bradshaw almost certainly dealt with outside marketing firms while at Temple. He would be able to work with said firm knowing La Salle's strengths/weaknesses both from the outside looking in and inside looking out.

Not saying Bradshaw isn't qualified, because he more than is to do this. Simply, I'm not sure that someone operating under the interim title would be given the reigns to do something that's so revolutionary or outside the box in comparison to how marketing and promotions have been handled in the past. I'd be more than happy if he simply started an RFP process for marketing agencies.

Is that awesome or what? Great marketing idea he got from two fellow Explorers. Wonderful job to pull it off and get on stage. He looked like he fit right in there. He was feeling it. Edit: what is it with La Salle and St. Louis lately? Edit2: Colleen just tweeted him and he said that he is getting interview requests. CBS3 wants to have him on tonight. He is a La Salle Ambassador and said he will wear his La Salle shirt on the interview. Maybe this deserves it own thread.

Understanding this is a "basketball" forum, there's this whole long thread asking for fan involvement and attendance ideas. I go to a lot of La Salle road games in general; tonight I saw men's soccer up at Rider, which was a rather unique experience for me in that there WAS a substantial attendance at an NCAA game. What would it take for us to enjoy the similar rewards of a campus that is still immersed to the fullest potential in athletics, including but not limited to on Saturday nights? What would it cost in terms of staffing, facilities improvements, and dedicated external resources? Well, for one thing La Salle already has a very committed following, fans that have been with our team through thick and thin. But our numbers are lacking except for marquee event or two a year where we show up out of the woodwork. While La Salle waits for VCU or St Joe's to play us and then we "get out the word" for them, Rider seems to have figured out that investing in the fan experience is a worthwhile year round effort. They don't necessarily care about playing La Salle in particular on game night. (I overheard someone refer to us as "DeSales, I think?") They just came out for a worthy event that was strategically and professionally constructed to be fun, family friendly, and energetic. 1. "Zoo crew" were on hand to do T-shirt tosses after every goal. They patrolled the sidelines with smiles and chatted with the season ticket holders. 2. The DJ played actual relevant and familiar warm-up music from Bon Jovi "Have a Nice Day" all the way up to 2017 hits, with NO young girl pop, and NO rap lyrics at ALL. Having the DJ/announcer pump up the crowd with some radio-familiar tunes is such a nice departure from the way La Salle usually does it which is too often as mere time filler and loud volume as possible with very repetitive (For instance, playing U2's Elevation at every third media timeout) or uninteresting "mixes" (Re: dance team). 3. Student section for a soccer game wrapped around two areas of the field. They brought a drum and other noise instruments. At halftime, they relocated to further hound our goalkeeper. When the ball went out of bounds, someone would try to catch it or "head" it back into play. They looked like they were just having a blast. And ALL of them were in Rider gear. 4. They even had it catered! Everything was low priced, cash only based, with an external vendor providing all the set-up. They worked out an arrangement with the university AND local high schools to comp every student their first soda, after that everyone could opt to pay for $5 footlong hot dog, $4 funnel cake, $4 fries, and $2 lemonade. Loyola Maryland has similar concessions at their $60M outdoor complex. We at La Salle do have some fine catering option available on campus, and numerous meal outlets offer buffet style regular fare. But most of our games start at 7, and our food services draw people AWAY from the event. Instead of seen as competing with the dining services, it should be a collaborative effort with the student union. There should be promotions like Patio food night at McCarthy Stadium!!! Or, water ice or how about a root beer float? These promos would cost less than $2,000 to implement, as far as I know. Dividends are good: The last time La Salle offered hot food at a game, I noticed student attendance was about 4 times what we normally draw. Maybe this seems like something we ought to try more often than twice every five years. It's not a guaranteed success, and it won't resolve the school's underage alcohol problems, but it would turn some attention to on campus offerings instead of giving in to the fact that a lot of students like to either return home on Fridays and drink, or stay in their apartments and drink. 5. A ton of people were there before the game, and stayed after the game, and the parking lot was always FULL to the max during the game. I had trouble finding parking. And while I would say around 400 plus were dedicated soccer fans, numerous people were just out an about casually or barely even watching the game, they seemed to just be sucked up in the moment. Imagine what it would be like if people centered on campus for 2 hours a week just because La Salle had treated a basketball game against Rider, for comparison purposes, as the biggest deal on campus that week? I think La Salle actually suffers from lackadaisical fanbase and I hear it's because we're not in a major conference like Penn State or Villanova, even Temple anymore, but hopefully Rider shows us that there are opportunities for smaller schools to blow away expectations, and renege any excuse not to go to the event because you're worried no one else is going to be there, or because the stale pretzels might not cut it as dinner. Am I right? Look! A real scoreboard Wow! Great PACKED new bleachers, with sideline level views The student section was actually rather spread out, I think about 17 times as large as this snapshot would indicate, and they were noisy and supportive Best part of the night for me was the availability of carnival food like funnel cake!

Excellent post. Great work. Thanks and hopefully the message gets across.
PS if La Salle is going to have a Dollar Dog Night it might be a good idea to NOT run out of hot dogs BEFORE halftime.

Meh. It's something, so credit there. But start this stuff sooner. Tough to build the excitement by handing out some pizzas a week before the season. Should start this stuff months ago.

"Months ago" would have been the week school started and it did start with the incoming class during orientation with teaching them the fight song, coaches talking to students and even tossing streamers. There has been steady barrage on social media building up to the beginning of the season. The players themselves have been at various locations on campus handing out the student tickets, Explorer Entourage t-shirts and engaging and encouraging students to attend the opening game. The athletic department has been very engaged in building up excitement for Saturday. It amazes me that even when they do stuff that has been suggested by people here that there is still criticism that it is "not enough" or "not early enough."

I think the timing is right. If it’s done further in advance it just becomes noise in the background. Make a big push the week leading up to it. Get people excited to come out to the first game but the biggest momentum swing will be from the result on the floor.
Return from the Sweet 16 with a dud at home against Manhattan or lose on a buzzer beater to TX So. when the community has high expectations for the upcoming year and it’s 10x the work to gain their attention than it is in the days leading up to the season.
Deliver on the hype in game 1 and you’ve bought yourself some more rope with the fan base.

That Manhattan game in 2013 was far from a dud. They lost in 2OT and it was a great game. There was no dip in momentum after that game- it happened as the year wore on and we were mediocre the whole year. The year itself was a dud, but I don't think it's accurate to say that Manhattan game put any kind of a damper on things.

So, there was a halfcourt shot for $500 cash but the guy left it a bit short. What he had to do to qualify was to check into enough games on the fan app.
While I would not be eligible to play the contests by non student status , regardless I do check in to the games to make it interesting for me, and so far the most people I've seen to check in to any given game is 8 or 10 people and I don't understand that....
I really think the concept of competing for #1 fan was cool but it might be a generational thing, or not marketed sufficiently, as there are fewer than about 7 people who qualified to check in at most or all of the games. If you participate, you also get an alert/notification reminding you on every home game day. You're also supposed to be able to post photos and share them to other platforms. I thought, it was a great new concept and I'm glad La Salle tried something in this area, but it's so far underachieving and not really showing it might be integral yet to the game day experience.

Hey, even big schools struggle to get students to games ... I'm not sure a team that is 12-13 and 3-9 coming into the night with a snowstorm passing through is the most shining example for comparison of student attendance sizes.

I meant to say something after the last game. One of the '71ers in my section (there were 3 of us) outfought a couple of kids and came down with one of the t-shirts being thrown into the stands. We were trying to figure out the connection to La Salle or basketball to what was on the shirt. It said "Goodbye - Farewell" around what looked to be a badly rendered SEPTA logo (blurry, wrong colors). Was it a reference to Dr. G, the A10, division 1 sports, the rest of the season?
It appears that someone unloaded a bunch of seconds and they decided to unload them in turn. I hope to God that they did not pay anything for them because that will make me rethink my next donation to the Explorer fund.

I can't believe they were still using tokens. I can't believe I can't buy season tickets without physically calling the ticket office. And you can't buy women's season tickets, period. I inquired twice and was advised to save my money and just show up general admission whenever I feel like it, which hasn't been happening because I don't feel invested.

Just have to say that I LOVE- LOVE our fight song. Always sing it at home. True story-5 years ago I was in excruciating pain w a herniated disc; had surgery set and was going to Holy Redeemer for a pre-op. I could hardly move but had to ,get downstairs to leave house. But, I collapsed at top of steps. My wife was screaming and crying-going to call 911. I said WAIT-lets try the Fight Song first. She thought it was the pain meds. Anyway, I broke out into the FS, Marie joined in and I was able to get down the steps.A few days later I was in surgery and upon coming out I am in recovery, apparently urged docs and and nurses to join me in singing the La Salle Fight Song. Doc asked my wife if they should do a psyc. workup. She thought about it-but declined. another classic from the screamer.
