I'm oddly interested in peoples thoughts on the Papal visit. Has the media hype and Nutter's over the top security scared people away? Will 1.5 million people really flock to town? Over-under?
There was an article in the Washington Post then, in the Inquirer, intimating that Philly is making too much of this whole event and can't handle the pressure in the way that Washington or NYC could. Hotels have not been totally booked and SEPTA passes are still available.
Is anyone attending any of the events? Renting their homes? Escaping to the shore for the weekend?
Just curious.

I think the WAPO needs to shut the f#@$ up, personally. Yeah, it's being overhyped, what isn't these days? Philly has had very good success with the Made in America concert (though this year's performers are pretty weak overall) and has had lots of big events with minimal problems. I think the whole Papal zone thing is pretty over the top, but I guess you can never be too careful these days. Heard on the news last night people are starting to think a lot of people are coming for the World Meeting of Families, then leaving before the Pope's mass.

It would be much better if the Pope came unannounced to the local Catholic Churches in the area on Saturday and Sunday of that week. I also think most of us would rather hear his views on how we need to defeat the evil known as Radical Islam, a real threat to our future, rather than his views on global warming.

I spoke to someone today who lives in NYC. The Pope will say a Mass in Central Park. This person said that NYC has made little fanfare according to him. No special trains. No special travel restrictions. I'm sure the NYPD and all the law enforcement agencies are prepared but it hasn't reached "Popemageddon" like here.
What really got me was the announcement I heard on television to treat this like a major snowstorm and buy milk and bread for those few days on the weekend.

Actually I do according to polling. Only 31 percent view "global warming" as a most fearsome weapon of mass destruction... Gosh, I wonder if that's because most people don't worry about anything beyond themselves and their expected lifespan. Can't be ...

The Pope's views on Radical Islam are well documented. The only problem is the media hasn't focused on these comments because they are not controversial enough.

hykos, I pray that Francis has a solid solution to deal with defeating radical Islam throughout the world and to stop the mass migration of Muslims to European countries. ISIS must be defeated so these immigrants can return to their home countries. Let's send Chaput over to handle ISIS, he's good at shutting things down and is ice cold. Little wonder he has not be elevated in church rank. We've had some pretty lackluster archdiocesan leaders in the last half century. Philadelphia deserves better.

Chaput is not one of Francis's guys so that is why he is not a Cardinal. I don't agree with a lot of things with regard to Chaput but he has had taken major steps to clean up the fiscal mess.
This job was dramatically more difficult than he was lead to believe when he came to Philadelphia. His recent interview in the Inquirer IMO made him sound like he was tired and can't wait for his retirement date. Yes, he will NOT be a Cardinal when he leaves.

Good stuff by school...
Are you involved in the World Meeting of Families?
Tell us about it!
In less than a week, His Holy Father Pope Francis will arrive in Philadelphia for the world’s largest gathering of Catholic families—and many Explorers have key roles in this unprecedented event. What part will you play?
We want to highlight the ways, big and small, that La Salle students, faculty, staff, and alumni are involved with the Papal visit and participating in the first World Meeting of Families (WMOF) ever to be hosted in the United States.
•Did you help organize or plan any of the festivities? •Are you working in the press room or providing coverage of the event? •Does your business or restaurant have a Pope special? •Is your workplace a corporate sponsor for any of the WMOF events? •Are you volunteering at or attending the Papal Mass or congress at the Philadelphia Convention Center?
Let us know how you are getting involved! Share your stories, pictures, and contact information with us at socialmedia@lasalle.edu by Monday, Oct. 12, and you just might find yourself on our website or in the upcoming issue of La Salle Magazine.
And keep us up to date on all your adventures during the event from Sept. 22–25 by using the hashtag #WMOFExplorers. Don’t forget to show your school pride in your La Salle gear!

Will Francis step foot on SJU of Penna.'s campus and commemorative banner raised at Fieldhouse?

I like how Pope Francis subtly reminded Congress and the rest of our politicians that they were elected to serve the American people and not themselves. He went and served lunch to 300 poor people rather than have an extravagant lunch with Congress.

Saw a piece on the parking situation by the Ben Franklin Bridge in Camden. As of 4pm today, only 250 spaces were sold of the 8000 available spots. If you decide to park on Saturday, the price is $44 for the day. I saw they were charging $50 last Summer for parking at the free concert on the AC beach. State stepped in this year to pass a law on price gauging. I guess it doesn't apply to the Pope or Camden. One way to close the income gap. BTW, I read the article about the number of SEPTA Regional Rail tickets purchased as of Wednesday. Warminster was about average with about 42% of their allotment sold.
Problem no one talks about is when every wants to head home after the Sunday Mass. Remember the disaster after the Phillies WS Parade when people wanted to all head home. I know someone who couldn't get on a train for 4 hours after the parade.

A couple of years ago, the City Six had a scheduled Sunday morning Community Service project. They wanted to clean up Cobbs Creek Park. Lots of athletes participated. G was there with the entire team. La Salle, Temple and Drexel were there. No Penn. No Villanova. No SJU. I forget what the excuses were but if memory serves me. Penn didn't even bother making an announcement. Nova said they screwed up thinking it was another Sunday. Don't recall what SJU said if anything. Interesting who attended and who didn't don't you think?

Papal Visit Underwhelming? Resoundingly, no.
Philadelphia shined as a global city. A moving and inspiring visit to our region. I think everyone can take something positive from the Papal Weekend. Pope Francis' humility and humanity are awesome. And kissing babies and praying with children afflicted with challenging disabilities - start the waterworks. True Lasallian values.
Catholic education was featured prominently. Setting aside the SJU of Penna. Papal detour, much play on television for Catholic institutions. President Colleen on MSNBC, Christian Bro. Ernest Miller FSC on Channel 6, a La Salle pilgrimage down Broad Street from school on CBS3 - led by a brave young freshman woman who is battling cancer. Commercials/sponsorships for smaller Catholic institutions such as Holy Family, Neumann and Rosemont. O'Hara and Shanahan marching bands at arrival and departures. Did not hear the word Villanova uttered once all weekend on television, odd?!
An unforgettable event for Philadelphia and the Roman Catholic Church in the Delaware Valley.

I agree wholeheartedly. Pope Francis humbled himself by serving the poor lunch in DC rather than having a high-priced lunch with members of Congress. He reiterated the rights of Freedom of Religion by visiting the Sisters of the Poor. Most importantly he said "Remember to Pray for me". It was a very special visit for all Catholics. He touched the lives of many Christians and those of other religions as well.
