calm down. It would be too scary if they didn't invite us, because that would mean we weren't worthy of consideration.

Yeah, as long as we don't accept, there's no harm in them inviting. It's also worth noting that Dick Weiss is the main college sports reporter for the NYDN, and this article is not by him.

Agreed with rcoz. The decision to move conferences is more than just 1 sport for a school like La Salle. Our other programs have shown to be very competitive in the A10 (Track, M+W Soccer, Swimming) and I would expect backlash from those teams for a move to what should be considered a lesser conference.

Swimming, Track, and even Soccer don't make any money, so I do believe the decision will (or at least should) some down to what's ultimately best for the basketball team. If we were national powerhouses in these other sports, that might be something, but just being in the upper part of the A-10 isn't going to mean much in the grand scheme of things.

Do we make money with basketball now?

I think the simple fact that we are mentioned in this article illustrates how bad our situation is. Are there other articles anyone has seen that has other current A10 members being mentioned as moving to lower level conferences? I assume the only sure thing in all of this is that we are not in any way being proactive to protect our interests.

I saw an article in the NYT mentionaing us as a condidate for the Catholic 7 so really neither scenario holds a lot of water for me.

Easy solution: Get a D-1 football program and join the ACC. Done.

What happens in 2 or 5 or 10 years when most schools can't afford the liability insurance that's going to get attached to football?
(Serious question.)

You're making the assumption that the decision makers do what's best for $$. We already know this to not be true so I don't think you are giving the other programs enough merit.

I bet they totally have a meeting set for after the holidays to discuss what preemptive planning should be done.

I don't think Kevin has anything to do with this. At this point it is Brother Mike and Tom Brennan. The A-10 is meeting on Thursday.
It is becoming obvious that the end result will be a watered down A-10 which is still better than the MAAC. Question seems to be who will A-10 reach out to add more teams?

If its really just X and Butler, we basically swapped VCU for X. Not perfect, but hardly "watered down", right?

Looks like SLU is also going and most likely UMASS at some point.Losing Temple X, and Butler is what I call watered down. The league now is a beast but potentially losing all these program I would say it will be watered down but still palatable.

Thoughts on extending an invitation to Drexel in the foreseeable future? La Salle/SJU (PA) would be OK with adding another Philly school?

Thoughts on extending an invitation to Drexel in the foreseeable future? La Salle/SJU (PA) would be OK with adding another Philly school? No for me. If I were A-10 Commissioner for the day ad now sit at10 teams: Dayton, Duquesne, Fordham, GW, La Salle, Rhode Island, Richmond, St. Bonaventure, St. Joe's, and VCU............I would go to 12 teams and divisions and play each school in your division twice and the other division once. I would add two teams from George Mason, Davidson, and Siena and hope I could grab two of those teams. Not sure if Mason or Davidson have any interest but I would start there.

Didn't Davidson just turn down a chance to jump to the CAA? If they turned down the CAA they're not going to join the A-10. Charlotte went from a really good program into a very eh program over the course of its tenure in the A-10 and it was largely because of geography. Although I would love to have Davidson.
The MAAC just added a few teams from the Northeast Conference. I think this may have been done in order to mitigate the impending loss of a few schools to other conferences.

Good point re: Charlotte. I remember when them and SLU came in, Charlotte was supposed to be the bigger deal, and was actually the better team the first couple of years they were in the league.

With Xavier and Butler seemingly out of the A10, I would love to see Old Dominion and George Mason come into the league.

I think an interesting question is did we ever really leave the MAAC. We seem to be a MAAC level program playing in the A10. We have had little success since leaving the MAAC and if we have made a larger financial commitment, it isn't obvious. The reason the Iona game scares us and we lose to CCSU and Bucknell is that we are still playing at the MAAC level. We should either accept the invite to return to the MAAC or begin to operate like an A10 level program.
