So who are you going to listen to - Cataldi or Gargano?
I used to like Gargano when he first started but he is as big a clown now as Cataldi.
Does anyone still listen to celestial radio or is it satelite for everyone now?

I've never listened to Gargano as I'm out of range for Philly radio for the most part, but I did hear Cataldi a few times back when I first lived in the area. I can't imagine anyone could even come close to that pompous blowhard.
These days. I listen to a mix of Sirius and NPR.

The callers are just louder, drunker and less educated. Missanelli really brought Philly Sports talk out of the shadow of Eskin, who was insufferable. While Cataldi has a following that he'll drag over to the station, I still will listen to him over Cataldi. It's nice to have local sports talk in the morning that I want to listen to, but the other guys are just headache-inducing.

Listening to any of those guys talk to younger women was peak uncomfortable radio. Even present-day Francesa is billions of miles ahead of any of those guys mentioned above.

As a mets fan, thats what covering them in October will do to you lately.
I usually stick to the 97.5 app for coverage of specific interviews and the occasional live stream. Can't stand cataldi, which is kinda his thing.

Can't stand cataldi, which is kinda his thing. This. There are so many people that can't stand Cataldi that there are pages upon pages of mentions of all the things he's said that were insufferable or unlistenable over on the philly.com page. Comments on the page are now closed. It's the sign of making it in radio, who can get more haters because haters = listeners. And haters generate more hype than anyone with nice things to say could.

New England carpet bagger Angelo collected checks for "teaching" journalism down at the Comm. Center for a number of years. Gail Cataldi attended La Salle. And movie buddy Bill Wine makes appearances on the Morning Show. Yet despite these connects it did not stop Angelo and Company from having a great laugh at La Salle Basketball the Monday after the team was selected for the NIT. Outstanding La Salle alum and human candy apple Gonzo came on and after talking about the NCAA Field, everyone had a great laugh when Gonzo said that even if they expanded the field to 96 teams that La Salle would still not get in because the program is so bad...Less said on the show about the school during the Summer of 2008 the better.
Then, after falling to the Shockers, Cataldi took the position of accusing La Salle of letting the city down. Total and non logical position but nothing new for Angelo who loves to be a provocateur.
Phillip Martelli has a standing invitation to the Morning Show.
Gargano, to his credit, did a full show during the Sweet 16 run about La Salle Basketball and had some great guests, memories from those great seasons, etc.

I would listen to 4 hours of Francesa's sleeping over 1 hour of Cataldi's 55 year old frat guy who doesn't really know sports schtick.

Sure, but you said any of the guys above. Cataldi is the bottom of the barrel. Missanelli, for me, at the top.
Gargano...somewhere in the middle.

Good Missanelli I enjoy. "Shut up nerd, I 'played the game'" Missanelli I do not. He lambasts the bad callers, which I support. Guys that called in today to preach about how Tim Tebow is a "perfect fit" or "ran this offense in college" or "will be the most dynamic field goal placeholder in football" (last one was real). These are all incorrect, crazy arguments. He doesn't prop these guys up. He buries them. And he should because they shouldn't have a place on the airwaves.

Sure, but he also buries people who are very right. Half the time I don't think it mattered why someone called, he was just looking for an argument.
(And don't take my rankings above as endorsing modern day Francesa by any means. Its picking where I want you to punch me.)

I've never lived in NY, so Mike Francesa is just a funny deadspin story to me. From the clips I've seen though, I'd probably turn him off.

Trying to avoid jumping in about NY sports talk radio, since the thread isn't about that really, but I'll make a more general point:
Sports talk radio stations need to talk about sports. Any one that melts in "guy talk" which is really just about about hot girls, or stupid stunts or whatever, loses major points in my mind. Nothing drives me more crazy, regardless of city, time slot, or if its national or local.

Right. Whether or not you like him, or more specifically liked them when he was with Russo, you couldn't argue their knowledge. Take every single caller they ever had and put them up in trivia and 199 times out of 200, they destroy. They could be annoying (Chris) or bad or boring (Mike) or completely unfun, but they never pulled the ratings bullshit*, it was always (and still is with Mike) sports and only sports. If anything, what makes him unlikable** is his sports-only focus on life in general.
* I'm pretty sure Russo has gotten away from this with his own show. Together they were perfect at balancing each other out.
** Francesa takes pride in working the day after his kids' births because "what was I gonna do ... look at them". That's super gross.

I'm just looking forward to the next few years when podcasting and remote recording quality takes a big leap. It is my preferred medium at this point but the production is still getting there. Our games audio still can improve as well.
Would love for kale/ degler/ josh/ anyone to do a weekly or bi weekly cast during the season. Cover big 5 if there's not enough listeners for 20th + O. I felt insightful coverage, post game and coaches interviews were lacking this year. The stations hardly touch college athletics now it seems. Joe did you post a lot of that stuff in the past?

I felt insightful coverage, post game and coaches interviews were lacking this year. The stations hardly touch college athletics now it seems. Joe did you post a lot of that stuff in the past? So here is the problem with this not being school sponsored. For a school like La Salle, there are just not enough listeners to support the time (and definitely not enough to get it sponsored). We looked into doing a sponsored podcast on Big 5 and there just has to be a guarantee of listeners. For most time pre-February, even for the big schools, it is just tough to get ears. With NFL, College Football and Christmas...normal people (people that don't post on message boards) just don't have the time or commitment. I always tried to post videos of the post-game pressers because it is easy, but unless it is your full time job it is just hard to get anything outside what is readily available. Josh has dedicated the time to doing it all. 100s of high school games, all college teams in a 100 mile radius...and he does a great job. But that is a full-time gig and then some and doing that AND anything else is very difficult.

I actually worked on Cataldi's show for two years, so I'm a bit biased, but I put on Gargano's morning show the other day and it was horrendous, so I flipped back to Cataldi right away. As far as the afternoons go, I was skeptical of the Innes/Bruno show for a while, but it's starting to grow on me.
That being said, Gargano did have some great shows during La Salle's Sweet 16 run. Joe obviously knows what he's talking about with the challenges of getting a Big 5 show going, and what he's saying makes sense. I wish local college basketball was bigger than it is, but honestly it's just not big enough of a deal lately to get mainstream people talking about it on a regular basis. I wish that wasn't the case.

I actually had Cataldi's class in sports writing. It was truly awful. He was an incredible bonehead. I remember him ripping me because we had to do a book report (not kidding) on our favorite sports book. I picked "The Last Shot" by Darcy Frey. He said the book couldn't possibly be good since he never heard of it.
I assume he taught at La Salle just to check out college girls. His daughter went to La Salle when I was an undergrad, so maybe he taught the bare minimum of classes needed to receive tuition reimbursement. But he was truly awful.
He's such an embarrassment. I remember he made a big deal about Michael Sam kissing his boyfriend after he was drafted and how "gross" it was. Like listening to some 60-year-old slob ogle strippers on a show isn't gross? Or how Wing Bowl is the true depths of humanity?
The biggest piece of human garbage in the Delaware Valley's sports radio market is Josh Innes. The only talent he has is ripping off the generic shock jock playbook. Come up with "shocking" topics (like his Porn March Madness)? Check. Race bait? Check. Manufacture a rivalry with another sports host? Check. Complain about your "issues" with management in a horrible attempt to seem rebellious? Check.
Our sports media in Philly is largely filled with mouth breathers.

Not a huge Gonzo fan but if they're doing that on the air, he's right. Not even because it's racially insulting, mostly just because it's insulting to anyone who completed the 4th grade. Talk about sports or get the fuck off the air.

Just saw where Bruno is gone from 610.
Apparently that fat $&@@ Innes was too much to take.
It's only a matter of time before Innes says or does something and gets fired.
