I have almost zero faith that the president or BOT will step up to the plate and invest in the program facilities-wise. I hope I am wrong. We may find ourselves in a watered down A-10 with the addition of middling schools from the CAA. And despite what the delusional SJU (PA) fans say on their forum, they will be right there with us. But who knows, the La Salle administration might even prefer that conference scenario, small time, small mind, and small dime.

Brother Mike is the main problem. He could push a facility upgrade through and get support from the BOT.
I have never been a Brother Mike fan after giving him a fair shot when he was hired. He is the typical Chrisitna Brother administrator with little vision in today's world and La Salle has suffered because of it. The fact that he has been in the position this long is an indictment on the BOT but ultimately he is the main reason for La Salle's lack of progress.
Don't give me the building of the dorms etc..Colleges all over the country are doing that. He hasn't grown the endowment or put La Salle in a position for future success.

I don't think you can so casually dismiss the the building of dorms, dining halls, the whole west Campus thing. I agree the issues with the endowment and the basketball situation are strikes against him, but I think he's done some good work as well.

Having first hand knowledge of this situation, this is not completely on Brother Mike. The BOT, of who Brother Mike answers to, told him that they are fundraising for the Business School in lieu of the Arena. The school has been trying to get money for the business school for several years and well it hasn't been going well.

I would think a president with the ability to persuade people could get this done. His ability in the area is a problem IMO.

Unfortunately, it is likely too late to salvage our conference position. The 7 BE hoops schools are not going to include us in any new big east basketball conference. I suspect that even with a new arena we may have been left behind. La Salle is not a money school. We have a relatively small student body and what seems like only a handful of alums who are really into the program. While it pains me to write this, I can't come up with a reason why we should be included in a new conference. At this point, my only hope is that wherever we land we have the type of success we had in the MAAC. While we all wanted to move into a bigger conference, we did have some exciting teams in that era. My biggest fear is when the football powers leave the NCAA because they don't want to split the pot with smaller NCAA D1 schools that basketball among the non BCS schools will be the equivalent of DII.

Check out this ESPN Podcast with Katz and Greenberg: espn.go.com/college-sports/story/_/id/8742607/seven-catholic-schools-leaning-leaving-big-east-sources-sayAfter Greenberg spouts that the SEVEN ORPHANS will want to include St. Joe's in any new catholic conference, in the next breath he says a poor facility will leave La Salle on the outside looking in. Guess Greenie's never seen the Taj Mahal in Overbrook...

An honest question, take this program, exactly as it is, and put it into a decent, but not great arena (think GW's Smith Center). Would that be enough to convince this seemingly new league to add a 3rd Philly area school to the mix?

I think we would have a much better shot yes, but still don't think we would get the offer. Maybe we would get an offer to join a few years down the road if G takes this team dancing and wins a few games, and then does the same thing next year.

Depends on the other option, I imagine, but I think we'd be helped out a lot more than most 3rd in a market teams by the Big 5 status.

OK, next nonsense hypothetical: If we offered to play all league games at the Palestra until such time that a new arena or renovated TGA was opened, would that be enough?
......I'm just having some fun coming up with questions here, I know this isn't a viable option.

(What's stupid is there's really no excuse for St. Joseph's of PA to be the clear cut #2.) Aside from some renovations to their gym, some good current NBA alums, a prolific coach who gets himself regularly onto national and local radio stations, a recent undefeated regular season, a rivalry with Nova akin to a mini Duke v NC, a mascot with tradition who actually fires up the crowd at games, and a deep recent run in the NCAA, actual NCAA tournament appearances in the last 20 years, and a lack of a coaching carousel there really isn't much difference between our two programs.

Sadly you hit the nail on the head. I live in North Jersey, no one knows LaSalle, it was embarassing saying I went there (sad but true) because no one knew where the hell it was. If they did they made fun of our stupid mascot, team name, small gym etc. Everyone my age (mid to late 20s) knew St. Joe's because of the Jameer / West team. Sad but true. On a side note if you google La Salle acceptance rates and then St. Joe's acceptance rates, ours is more stringent. Is this correct?

My bigger question is, the old big east will be competing with the new big easy for the same TV deal- only one deal can be had. In addition, if the 40MM is now split 12 ways instead of 16 that's also a little better right? From a pure dollars and cents perspective.

Also- for those with BOT contacts... If it comes down to staying in the best BBall league or being knocked down a few pegs but have a new biz school would the BOT have the foresight to realize the biz school is useless with no university recognition?

I was a business major, and I really fail to see why a new business school trumps an arena for our next large capital investment project. College Hall was the best facility on campus back when I graduated ('09). With the conference realignment, any investment in a basketball arena seems more and more like a pipe dream.

The problem is this: I'm not sure there's any scenario where we would have ended up in the new league, but we'll never know because our arena would never allow us to get past step 1.

Once and for all, BOT must decide whether to support a BB program that can compete with STJ and other similar schools in a very good BB conf. This is the definitive moment for perhaps the next50-100 years for the University. LSU helped me achieve a degree and then go to law school. LSU helped me become a man and a more moral person. Academics come first. But, in order to be in position to attract good students, we cannot be seen as the backwater school of Phila. If we go back to a lesser conference after fighting so hard to get to the A-10, we will be a laughing stock for decades and if we cannot attract good students, then we will have a pretty new Bus. Bldg but with a student body far inferior to the one that I was part of. This is not about BB. IT IS ABOUT BUSINESS, and it is scary to think that while the BOT is focused on a new Bldg for business that they are ignoring the building blocks that the U. needs most for business- to wit, street credibility amongst prospective students who will not matriculate to a U.that the public at large uses as a punching bag- or perhaps even worse-ignores. If the BOT does not get it, they do not understand business and things will deteriorate quickly. This is not a close call. LSU BB is on the brink, but so is the U. I hope that the BOT can understand this,

Which wasn't my point. I'm not disputing that they are the #2, I'm saying there's really no reason they should have passed us like that to become the no doubt #2.

I don't think being #2 will make any difference here. St. Joes and La Salle are not going to be invited to the new big east. We now have to make the best of our situation. We should be able to contend annually with the remaining A10 teams so there may be opportunity here. Like in the MAAC, we should contend for a conference title every year and get back to the NCAA tournament. We really are without options here but I hope we commit to being a top team wherever we land.

LSU, StJ, ST Bonny, Duquesne, Fordham, Richmond, Rhody, GW, Iona, Sienna, Drexel and Manhatten would be an ok conf bec. it has an upside,i.e., schools that can grow into better BB programs in that they have had some success. Not counting on UMASS. Va. Com could be diff maker bec of their cred; keep them in and we r ok; w/o them, would want G. Mason.

I would see that league as just a lot of team that are never going to touch the NCAA tournament. If only 1 team is guaranteed a spot...I wouldn't expect many, if any, at-large bids knowing the kind of teams these schools would play in their OOC schedule + conference schedule. I would not be a fan of this scenario.

Well, I'm not sure there's a scenario you're going to like. We're going to have to make do most likely, and something like he mentioned is probably the best case scenario.
