In case anyone was unaware, JFK visited La Salle in 1958 and received an honorary degree. A plaque marks the spot which is now inside the chapel. I read that on November 22nd, 1963, many of the men at La Salle were looking forward to a popular annual dance to be held on campus, the dance like everything else on that Friday was cancelled. Other La Salle honorary degree recipients from the Kennedy family include Sargent Shriver and Tim Shriver. I believe Ted Kennedy and Bill Clinton held a late October vote rally at the Hayman Hall back in 1999. The late 50's were a particularly busy time for then Senator John F. Kennedy as he began to make speeches and appearances across the country to raise his national profile for 1960. Villanova bestowed an honorary law degree on Kennedy in 1957. SJU (PA), well they were busy flapping and missed the boat...

Great work, sic. There was a memorial to JFK in the chapel, on the spot where he gave his speech after receiving the degree (I assume it's still there). The chapel was an auditorium in those days.
The story of the cancelled centennial dinner is one of the most poignant in La Salle's history.

JFK was the first Catholic president and became popular because he cut tax rates. He successfully got us through the Cuban Missile Crisis and had the vision of the USA being the first to land on the moon. He most likely would have supported Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton for reducing the size of government by cutting taxes.

JFK was born in 1917 in Brookline, MA, which is a suburb of Boston. He was given the nickname JFK because his initials were JFK. JFK also had a son who was JFK Jr and JFK Jr got that nickname because his initials were also JFK but he was a junior to JFK's JFK senior. JFK Jr also died.

Having emphasized that....One of the last things I did at La Salle was go to a speech by Hubert Humphrey in May 1971. La Salle was renaming the old library in honor of Governor David Leo Lawrence. (Lawrence actually worked to get LBJ the Democrat Presidential nomination in 1960.) I have been trying to get a copy of that speech. Would La Salle have a recording of this? Would La Salle have a copy of the speech?

Would La Salle have a copy of the speech? On the third floor of Connelly Library sits two or three full shelves devoted to the Presidents. I believe they are called something like the Official Presidential Record of (insert President from FDR on) ? I can't really recall their actual title but they are an extensive collection of the public schedule and any and all official utterances by the President. I remember when I was at the La Salle I read the speech Clinton gave in Haymen back in 1999 which was in one of the volumes. I do not know if these volumes include the Vice Presidents. Might be worth a shot if you're down at the campus? Otherwise maybe an email to the La Salle University archives department?

Thanks.
Humphrey was LBJ's VP. When he gave that speech at La Salle he was on the bench. I believe he returned to the US Senate. He was a great public speaker.

Yes it does. If you ranked the presidents 1-44 in terms of best to worst and also ranked them 1-44 in terms of public speaking ability, the lists would be identical. A president who is a great public speaker is a great president. A president who is a poor public speaker is a poor president. No exceptions.
