Two posts from the Meet and Greet thread on the SJU (PA) message board recently.
From Hoganite 91
What I took from it is that while Jill and Billy will try to maintain the Hawk tradition, they want things moved into the present and will not be tied to the past. It’s a new era, and they want Saint Jospeh’s to be THE school for the Philly players. I met Billy briefly, and wow, he is extremely engaging, as are the members of his staff. He said all the right things in his speech, especially about playing fast and being in shape. I am really excited.
From Twincities SJU Hawk
What I liked the most was hearing Billy talk about how Jill and him have been reaching out to departments across campus to try and get students to help out. His vision is to have students in the Analytics major work with the team. He wants to get marketing students to help with connecting the program and students in a modern way. Seems to me with the move to free tickets for students that there will be a strong push to get students back to games and reengaged with the team.
First. "THE school for Philly players" is a little presumptuous i think. Channeling James Franklin? Let's see how this works out. Red meat for the fan base.
Second, I have been a big fan of utilizing the students in a particular major to enhance the program. Some others have different ideas which is fine. I'd like to see La Salle do a much better job in this area.
Third, what is the school and program doing to effectively use Ashley? I understand it the Recruiting season with showcases and AAU Tournaments but there has to be time for something. Please help me but I only recall two public Meet and Greats when Ashley first got the job. One was in Center City and the other in South Jersey. Now is the time when you sell tickets. School is piecing out in dribs and drabs the upcoming schedule and saying to look for season ticket renewals soon. Is this our Marketing Plan?

They should convene a couple undergrads to figure it out.
But in all seriousness, the only thing that will sell tickets is winning. We saw that in 12-13 when Gola was routinely sold out. Get back to being a bubble team and everyone will show up.
La Salle does not need to do what Joes did. G didn’t leave and bury the school. People didn’t write Inquirer opinion pieces on how the school did the wrong thing. There was no backlash.
Keep the faith. Trust the process.

Typical La Salle response has been and I'm afraid is " winning will sell tickets." What happens in the meantime? Nothing. Hope and Wait is not a business plan. Do nothing is not a plan. Sorry that doesn't fly in my business.
Why shouldn't La Salle use students in Math (for Analytics) and Marketing ( promotion). Sure would look good on a resume. Might inject some energy into the place.
BTW I believe SJU had more attendees at the Meet and Greet than La Salle has as season ticket holders.
I receive an email from Temple EVERY week updating me on events and things happening in the Athletic Department. All I did was buy a couple of tickets for a La Salle game at Temple about 5 years ago.

The school just hired their first new athletic director in 23 years. A month ago. Putting some 21 year olds ‘on the case’ isn’t an answer. Everybody at the school is very approachable. The president and two higher ranking members of the department have accounts here.
I’m not going to bury the brand new AD or the relatively brand new coach. Lumping what they’re going to do with people that are no longer employed by the school seems unfair.

I'm not even referring to the new AD because he is NOT even on the job til August 1st. This is our last several decades. Did you ever hear of internships? They don't run the job they HELP with projects and gain EXPERIENCE. Gee isn't that a part of college? They ASSIST those in the Administration and that department. It's been happening for decades. I can tell you of dozens of examples I have experienced in my career where an intern helped my business. Some in marketing. It can only HELP not hurt.
What makes you think I haven't brought things like this up for the last several DECADES.
I can't believe what I am reading here. It makes NO SENSE. I'm getting shit and for throwing out ideas that our rival is stressing to help their program.
Again who said I was talking about Mr. Baptiste? I wasn't. In fact, I'm not even blaming Coach Howard. I'm "blaming" those in charge or responsible for promoting the program. Where are the events this Summer where Coach can meet alums? I went on the Alumni website and see there is one in Ocean City NJ in July. I have NO IDEA if Ash will be there. Even if he is that is ONE event. That is not marketing. In fact it speaks on lack of interest in marketing the program.
I didn't lump them in with anything. It's not Ashley's responsibility to SCHEDULE events. I know for a fact he wanted to get out there and do as many events as possible. He asked "how are you going to use me?" Unfortunately he injured his leg after the first two publicly promoted events ( besides Raftery event in the Fall and recent golf outing) and that was that. What are we doing THIS SUMMER.

I gotta agree with Jelly on this. It seems to me that an in-depth BB marketing plan developed by students, if done in an exhaustive and novel manner, should be credit worthy academically and extremely valuable to the program. IMO, students are pretty good at knowing what students think and what might work well with them. Plus, they can constantly be talking with and getting suggestions from their peers in the process. Heck, just doing that can get students thinking about hoops.

I agree with your overall premise in your posts on this thread that La Salle should have been marketing this all along. We should be marketing, marketing, marketing incessantly to create awareness and excitement around the brand. I'm not saying we have to spend big dollars, because there's a lot of inexpensive things to do to get the program in front of alumni. The more they see it eventually some will come. Sure winning helps, but I think good marketing can bring people back in and of itself. The one thing I'll disagree with you on is I don't think Joe was giving you shit.

Agree 100% on getting the students involved in some of this. Let's use that business program that is so highly touted and put it to use internally with marketing and promotions. This would encourage more student ownership of the program and, quite possibly, make them alums who keep their interest and support of the program.
I scratched my head for years wondering why we couldn't sell tickets online when we had a computer science major and masters programs in IT.
Let a team of students own marketing with some guidance as a project. It would get them great resume experience.

Interesting contrast between the La Salle MBB roster page and the WBB roster page. Someone on the ball and someone asleep?

the one thing that really jumped out at me is christian ray at 6'6", 220 lbs. hoping that coach ash uses every eligible player and goes 10 deep with the rotation. every one of them has the ability to contribute this year. 1 through 8 will probably average 20+ minutes each but hopefully 9-10 can both get on the court for somewhere around 15 minutes each. Well, it is #CRAYWEEK!
