Sorry guys, feels like I blew it by acknowledging a level of general humanity rather than applying some factor that includes win-loss record. Sorry. Sorry. Really embarrassed here. My fault, I must have missed the appeal to humanity in mis-characterizing how we talked about Giannini and saying "this guy deserves no sympathy."

Phil started on Hawk Hill in 1985. The Walking Madonna came to 20th and Olney in 1988. Both suffered the same fate.

Get a reality check. This was orchestrated with taking care of Phil as much as possible - why would they do it any other way? Press release listing none of his accomplishments seems less than orchestrated to take care of Phil. La Salle had a more glowing press release about Brennan being canned, and that's a guy with a birdhouse on his head on here who may have been one of the most incompetent employees in the school's history. "...and that's a guy with a birdhouse on his head here....". This is a classic conceptualization by Gnocchi and something which separates this board from all others. (along with the avatar of G smashing his head against the assistant coach).

None of us have the slightest idea what actually happened. Do you think they just surprised him, just kicked him to the door after 30-some-odd years? I don't know squat, but I highly doubt they treated him with anything other the highest levels of respect. Get a reality check. This was orchestrated with taking care of Phil as much as possible - why would they do it any other way? I have some knowledge of how it went down through a mutual family friend. Yes, it's hear say but I trust where it comes from. Considering what I heard and what is being reported by SJU, the media and on social media it makes me come to a certain conclusion. So yes, maybe there is a chance they did the right thing. I just doubt it but having an idea of his character I'm sure he will swallow his pride and feelings eventually. IMO, there was just a much better way to let him go. Considering the names be circulated around I think they could of waited another week or so, issued a press release together, maybe even a commemorating video of his legacy and moved forward. Simply put, Phil deserved better, much better.

An editorial note: A three-paragraph farewell announcement, which included a clumsy reference about the intent “to develop a sustained culture of excellence" — that was a shot, beyond unnecessary, straight to insulting. Maybe Martelli didn’t read it, but it’s hard to read it any other way. St. Joe’s had three straight losing seasons. But such a phrase seemed to miss the bigger picture of all Martelli had achieved.

St. Joes could have given Phil a farewell tour next season. However, they would have to hire a successor now. The successor and Phil would have to be okay with it, in order to avoid a recruiting nightmare.
Phil was trying to get DiJulia to negotiate a contract extension last year. The AD told Martelli that he couldn't do it. We can infer that Phil Martelli still wants to coach basketball. Who is to say he would be okay with being a lame duck coach for a season?
This sucks because Phil could've had any job opening in the country 15 years ago, and he stayed on Hawk Hill. It's horrible that he's had to grieve his father's death in the middle of his last basketball season at St. Joes. I think all of us, most of whom aren't very warm to Phil, realize this. I think most of us are capable of separating ourselves from being fans to realize that Phil, despite his abrasive personality and his warts that irk us, is a good coach, and he was great for St Joes over the last quarter century. I think most appreciate his charity work and being a champion for The Big 5.
However, unless Phil would agree to a farewell tour with a coach in waiting, who would also have to be along for the ride, there wasn't going to be an easy way to part ways with him.

Really curious to see where he goes next. GW? The thought crossed my mind but I'd be torn. The familiarity and relative record of success are pluses, but do those outweigh the string of recent losing seasons and potentially limited term length?

‘To delvelop and sustain a culture of excellance’..... This is not the way to start. She has the right and responsibility to hire and fire anyone who does not preform up to standards but she needs to do it while maintaining the dignity of the institute. She failed here.

Was just talking to a friend who is a sju of PA alum. She was not happy with the email. I just went back and looked for the email about G and la salle parting ways. The la salle one is 100x better easy. And I think we all (albeit begrudgingly) would admit Phil did more for sju of PA than G at la salle. And I was as appreciative of G as anyone, the sju of PA email real stunk.

IF St. Joe's was to select Jameer Nelson - It would have made perfect sense to do it like Temple and have Phil give Jameer a full year of guidance to learn and prepare. Particularly since Jameer has no coaching experience like McKie. If the Hawks don't intend to select Jameer and if Martelli would have no interest, then this post is moot.

Because I can’t interpret this any other way than you taking a shot at her physical appearance, but I also am legitimately amazed that someone would think that’s an OK thing to post. So please tell me I’m misunderstanding and it’s not a dog shit misogynistic comment.

Before I forget. Even though our home game with SJU won’t be a Big 5 game, a great rollout-ish idea for next season:
A fathead of Peter Boyle as Frankenstein and a chant to the tune of THWND of “Martelli will never die!” Because I think the ghost of Martelli will hang around that program the way Speedy’s did

And the Hawks have, at least temporarily, lost a recruit. I say temporarily because maybe the new coach reels this dude back in.

I say temporarily because maybe the new coach reels this dude back in. not likely the new coach will want this kid. hawks beat out coppin state and a mix of low-mid majors for him. i'm pretty sure the new coach will want to use it on a higher level player. whoever gets the job will probably try to keep the commitment from hakim hart.

So, was I correct in the nature of your comment? And if so, do you honestly expect me to believe a similar comment would've been made about a male AD in the same situation?

Also, Phil's statement is both a nice sentiment and evidence an amicable parting probably wasn't going to happen. Which is totally understandable from his side and a tough situation from the school's.

I hope we are at least trying to poach some of their prospects. Remember the Phil must go website? They may very well wish he was back coaching after their athletic director makes a piss poor hire. Karma is a bitch.

Not surprised that he does, but thought it'd be one of those "I'm going to assess and in a year from now he makes it known that he's available" type of things.
