Ed Snider passed away at 83. I was a huge Flyers fan starting back in '71. The two Stanley Cups in the mid-70's were great. They got close a few other times, but could never get over the hump. He seemed like a very caring owner and he was there from the start. He did a lot of good for the town over the years. Rest in peace.

Keith Jones told a story this morning on WIP... Back in 1999 or something, when LeClair was called for a bogus penalty in the playoffs that costed them a game (and I think the series), Snider came to the locker room concourse and told Jonesy to say anything he wanted to the refs, saying he'll cover any fines... And after Jonesy had some choice words, Snider then did the same thing.
Later, Snider told Jonesy that he got off much better than he did, with $2,000 fine in comparison the $50,000 fine Snider received. And he did, in fact, happily pay Jonesy's fine.
Passionate, relentless, and a hell of an owner. He was someone that made you want to win. And someone that cared about the players, fans, and the city. He was int he process of building three new skating rinks throughout Philadelphia, in South Philly, Germantown, and Mantua / West Philly. Sounds like a real decent human being. Big loss to the hockey community.
Guess we're destined to win the Stanley Cup now... Sorry, resident Rangers fans.

Don't remember that goal or anything about that series especially not Dwight King's interference that wasn't called because LA was down at the time of the goal that would have been called if they were up at the time of the goal ha ha ha this doesn't bother me at all I think its funny and whatever I don't care.

1967, freshman year went to like 4 Flyers games. It cost $1.50 to get in. The subway stopped at Jackson so you had to walk a few blocks to the Spectrum.
They used to give away tix that first year.

Lower level $3. First game was a give-away of tickets for the contest of naming the team. Anyone who had sent in the name "Flyers" got free tickets. Be neat to see the articles from back then as to the suggestions for the name. And then the roof blew off.................

I started following the Flyers in earnest when I saw a pic of Ed Van Impe on the Bulletin's sports page smashing an opponent into the crossbar. I was probably about 12 years old and said "this sport is for me!".

You can't get a more Flyers moment than that Simmonds fight.

You can't get a more Flyers moment than that Simmonds fight. The part when he was given a roughing call with the major, totally negating the boarding call we already had coming our way? Yeah, stab me with a spoon. RIP King Henrik

And your announcers praised it. It was sooooooo Flyers. 15 playoff teams try desperately there to score, 1 team tries desperately to prove they're the toughest.
Henrik is fine. He just wanted Raanta to get some playoff time after all the shit that went down last year in Chicago. He's fine. He's better than fine. Not hurt at all and his face still looks as beautiful as always.

Right, naturally they would praise it. Until they started realizing that a)Your leading scorer (pathetically) in Simmonds was in the box for the remainder of the game when you're trying to comeback against Holtby and b)he negated a powerplay. Boners.
Raanta could steal a few games, especially if you guys stop making Zatkoff look like Mike Richter.

It wouldn't be the playoffs if we weren't making the other goalies look incredible.
I like Raanta, but he seems like the kind of guy with a bad ratio of smarts/self-awareness to skill. Like obviously he's a top 50 goalie in the world, but he can get himself mind-f'ed at times. Perfect regular season backup (except for the game against the Kings).

Oh, totally. Even in Chicago when Crawford went down, Raanta would stand on his head. Two weeks later, he's down in the minors because he got out-played by Scott Darling. Total head case at times. Reminds me of every Flyers goalie ever, except that one time we went to finals by platooning an ancient Brian Boucher and Michael-f'ing-Leighton. Bobrovsky - once a Flyer, suddenly a Vezina trophy winner. It's so comical, I hate it.

I keep waiting for Mason to go back to Mason but its not happening. I figure it'll be the second they desperately need him. Like when he gave up goals to Carcillo and Pouliot in G7 a few years ago

Like when he gave up goals to Carcillo and Pouliot in G7 a few years ago Mason will keep being Mason, until the Flyers learn how to actually score more than 2 goals in a game. Their ineptitude in the offensive end is absolutely bonkers. The only thing I've got is Boucher stopping Olli Jokinen in the shootout to send us to the playoffs, and send the Rags home. Being a hockey fan isn't easy sometimes, but being a Flyers fan is really hard most times!

Game 1: With team down 1, late PP negated because of a fight Game 2: 101 foot goal Game 3: Complete meltdown, fans throw dead owner tribute bracelets onto ice Game 4: ?

Attended. Paid too much money. Stab me with a spoon. Ticket prices for game 4 have plummeted to $45.
I've got a bracelet. Mine didn't leave my arm.
And in all honesty, the national media has made a mess out of an already bad story. The bracelets had nothing to do with Snider. They simply lit up, and they were used as a pump-up tool for a light show pre-game (which was super freaking neat). Glad I saw the one and only, because that won't be returning to Philly anytime soon.
And I'm not condoning it, but the throwing of bracelets were because the team outright gave up. They stopped playing, stopped caring, and checked out. And the fans were pissed, somewhat rightfully so. To give up on the night they were honoring Ed Snider was disgusting, and the fans reacted. And hell, that's proven by the fans cheering for the delay of game penalty.
I'm fighting an uphill battle here. Philly will never outrun or escape the stereotypes of brutal fans, and this ain't gonna help it. Atleast I can say "I was there when we made it rain LED bracelets" the next time someone says "you threw snowballs at Santa".

Game 4: ? Embarrassed I didn't see "bench your goalie" coming for Game 4. The buzz throughout the fans was a secret hope that would have happened for Game 3, despite the obvious improbability they'd abandon Mason. There's something to be said for that "X-Factor" when a team is playing in front of a back-up - they get juiced up. Whomp. Too big of a hole to climb out of. But watch, they'll take them to 7 just to pull at my heart-strings.

I just find it funny that its gone from "THE FLYERS HAVE FINALLY FOUND THEIR GOALIE!!!" to "we need to pull the dude who has given up 4 even strength goals in 3 games". Yeah, it's easy to lose sight of that. But 2 of those goals have been AWFUL, one at 110feet and the other from an unscreened shot from Ovie that had no business going in. I'm not sold on Mason - he played great down the stretch, but he's inconsistent at best. Makes an incredible save one moment, allows a head-scratcher 5 minutes later. I don't think he's got the stuff, but mostly confidence, to steal a game for any team. The offense isn't doing its job either, but Game 3 for example -- Flyers score in first minute. A few minutes later, Mason allows a weak powerplay goal from the point. It's the playoffs, you need to make a save or two to keep your team in it - and he hasn't done that. And it's deflating, especially when a team comes out hot. Can we borrow the King?
