Watch Explorer alum John McCarthy lead the Philadelphia Union vs. New York Red Bulls tonight in the Penalty Kick series after the two teams tied in regulation, 1-1. John McCarthy has been the goalkeeper of choice for the Union during US Open Cup matches as Sylvestre is ineligible. And McCarthy showed a lot of gusto by fending RedBulls off, after the Union went down a player, for an 80 minute stretch, making nine saves and allowing just one goal over 34 shots. www.youtube.com/watch&v=aNa_GKctX3g&t=9949

John McCarthy, filling in for the injured Andre Blake, tied his club high with 9 saves, this time in an MLS regulation match, in the Union's 3-1 victory over second place FC Dallas on Saturday. McCarthy also previously just had been honored with the "Save of the week" as voted on by MLS viewers. This is his third season as back-up stopper with the Union.

Tough spot to be in given that Blake is sooooooo good. That was my thought coming into the season, that he would get next to zero meaningful playing time. But since he's proving his worth in Blake's absence, I think he's going to make a career somewhere after this. Whether or not it's in Philly full time doesn't seem to be an impediment to his career trajectory. He'll be at a minimum MLS capable as long as he stays healthy for the next 5 to 10+ years, and teams would be smart to sign him after seeing what he's capable of.

Yup. We're set now with Johnson in goal but we played two full seasons with Saunders and Saunders was below replacement level. Goalies seem either crazy variable or scarce (or both).

McCarthy stopped two penalty kicks against his former club (Philadelphia Union) this afternoon to win the MLS Cup, 3-3 (3-0 PK's)!
His moment to shine and a proud moment for La Salle. When he subbed into the match, the announcers mentioned he played for La Salle University.

I think we can all agree a La Salle grad taking out a Philadelphia professional sports team is just about as good as it gets.

It is really amazing... Doesn't play all season (only made 1 appearance before this) and then does that.... I hope that MLS Cup MVP award comes with a good chunk of $$$$.
Really hoping he gets a starting job somewhere... At the MLS level, he really has never gotten a chance has always been the 2nd or 3rd choice.

Its a pretty great story. Goes from out of MLS entirely to back in for expansion to this.

Blake makes 8x as much as him and was MLS Keeper of the year.
Extra special...John and his wife just had a baby, John the 4th, exactly 2 months prior. John's dad also played soccer for La Salle...maybe in 18 years we'll be getting the 3rd generation of John McCarthy on the pitch.
