I am sure, like others on the board, I got invited to go to this unveiling today. Did not go. To me, it made no sense to not do this on a game day. Whoever planned the unveiling without tying it to a game needs to buy a clue!!

Whoever planned the unveiling without tying it to a game needs to buy a clue!! Pretty much a disgrace that this wasn't done on a game day and open to the public. And this comes right on the heels of them "honoring" the 25th anniversary of the 1989-90 team. That was an embarrassment. Instead of doing it at halftime and showing a 3-4 minute highlight reel and allowing Speedy and/or Lionel to say a few words to the crowd, we got a 30 second video and the team trotted out there during a timeout late in the first half. And at halftime we had to watch 4 students who couldn't even make layups have a musical chairs contest. Pathetic.

I had absolutely zero clue about this...i see we're pretty good at communicating this to our alums and planning it on a day when few people are on campus

I did not hear about this either. Why in the world would you want to make this a private ceremony? LaSalle basketball needs as much attention as it possibly can get. Don't we have marketing majors at our university. Let's actually put to use what they're teaching our students and start marketing our flagship sports program.

this is a huge failure. Any chance you have to stoke excitement and pride in the program should be planned accordingly and done right.
What kind of elitist attitude does that show to make something like this quiet and PRIVATE? This is something that is really cool, could have been done correctly to get free exposure for the school, could have made the school look great with a proud dedication to a great phila man and was completely missed.
What a joke of an "unveiling".
Glad for the Gola family, this is something that Tom certainly deserves as Mr. La Salle.

It's not a statue, based on the pictures on Twitter. It's a small sculpture.

Glad to see others were upset besides me with the "honoring" of the 1989-90 team.

Okay I have to take it back a little bit. I was imagining something a little... grander. I understand this a bit more now. I thought this was a legit Bill Russell at city hall life size style commemoration.
Still a good gesture. La Salle has had good luck with statues in the past.

Me too. Can you imagine calling a press conference for that. It is the Minnie me of Gola. Glad they did it though. Nice gesture. The guy is a legend.

While not as bad as originally envisioned, wondering if any consideration was given to placing a more life size type statue of Gola somewhere in or near Haymen or did they just run with the first idea that was proposed. Certainly would have been appropriate as there is, unfortunately, very little possibility that La Salle will be winning any more NCAA Basketball Championships any time soon. Also, if asked to contribute to such a statue, I, along with others, would have done so. (Does not appear there was any effort to collect funds towards this effort).
Finally, am still leaning towards the idea that the unveiling should have been tied to a game and open to the basketball following public. Assuming the available open space immediately in the statue area would not support the "crowd" do we not have the capability to broadcast the unveiling in the gym? Just wondering what, if any, vetting of this whole idea was done before implementation as it seems, while commendable, it has somewhat of an opportunity lost element to it.

I also think it should have been unveiled before a game. And also, why so small a sttue?
Only heard about it by a Sonny Hill reference on his Sunday morning program on WIP. Not exactly well publicized, although there was an article about it in today's Daily News.

Maybe the family was consulted and it was determined that Tom would have felt more comfortable with something of this size as opposed to a life size statue.

Glad to see others were upset besides me with the "honoring" of the 1989-90 team. I remember sitting in the stands and going "wtf?" when they trotted them out for 30 seconds during the timeout. It was such a small time move on their part. The AD is clueless.

I'm about as lapsed as you can get in terms of christianity, but isn't there a commandment against false idols?

The size of the statue is in line with the fab renovation of Hayman into Tom Gola Arena without seating under the baskets.
Maybe La Salle should just stop trying to honor a national legend since they're so bad at it. I hadn't realized that they even completely screwed up the presenting of Lionel's team. Brennan must work extremely hard at being inept because this level of incompetence does not come naturally.
BTW, the hand coming out of Brennan's chest is a classic.

"Tim Legler is going to be in for the game next weekend. I was thinking we should do something to acknowledge him."
"That's a great idea."
"I was thinking a gift card to TGIFridays. We can leave it at the front desk of his hotel."

I am glad that they are waiting for the opening of the new arena to have the life-sized statue of Gola. The Phillies didn't spring for the statue of Harry the K but the fans did.
Maybe it will take a fund-raiser to get the life-sized statues of Gola and Durrett for the new arena.
