Well, Zack is away from the basket a lot. He gets the ball up top as a safety valve. He sets picks He also works out of the high post in zones. That's how he's used and he's been the best player this season, pretty much.
Credit George Mason for gameplanning JW out of the game. He was fronted and double/triple teamed anytime they looked to get him the ball. We made some really bad entry passes. Mason wanted the guards to beat them last night and they didn't.
Last night's loss wasn't on G by any stretch of the imagination. We missed shots. All season long. We've missed easy shots, let alone the hard ones.

... G ... must learn to settle down. Asking G to change his stripes after a quarter century of coaching is like asking JRoll to stop hitting popups...

On coach again. Why isn't't Wright in the game for that weak side rebound on the GM miss. Guards can"t box out guys 6 inches taller Wright was in the game. Zack left his man to try to block Wright's man's shot so he didn't box his man out, leaving Petersen stuck with a bigger guy on the follow. Duren had the ball on the left wing with 15 seconds to go when the last timeout was called, allowing Mason to set its D and for Hewitt to tell them they had a foul to give. With the ball in Duren's hands, might've been interesting to have seen the Explorers just play it out. Yeah, agreed with Duren. He had a good angle to do something, too. The problem was GM having an extra foul to give. They should have been in the double bonus by that point. The refs last night were truly awful. We did try and get to the rim and there were a bunch of calls we didn't get. Yet George Mason got a bunch of really awful touch fouls. I hate blaming refs for losses. But they were a major problem last night. They got in Tyreek's head.

In 2012/13 the team's player with the most Field Goal Attempts took 23.8% of the team's shots and converted at a rate of 41.9%
In 2013/14 the team's player with the most Field Goal Attempts took 22.3% of the team's shots and converted at a rate of 33.6%
In 2012/13 the rest of the team (obviously) took 76.2% of the team's shots and converted at a rate of 46.1%
In 2013/14 the rest of the team (obviously) took 77.7% of the team's shots and converted at a rate of 43.1%
Hard to blame it all on one player, however, one might make the argument that last year, the difference between the primary option on offense and the rest of the team was close enough to argue that the distribution of attempts was properly balanced as the difference was 420 Basis Points (46.1 minus 41.9 = 4.20). In 2013/14, the offense was not properly balanced based on the personnel available as the difference between the offensive focus and the rest of the team was 950 Basis Points (43.1 minus 33.6) and one might argue that the offense was not properly balanced and a distribution of offense that more closely correlated with 2012/13 may have been more successful despite the supporting cast's reduced Field Goal %.
Let's assume the result of the following formula in 2013/14 was the same as it was in 2012/13 where the player with the highest # of FGA = "Focus" and the rest of the team = "OTHER", by shifting the weighting in 2013/14 from "Focus" to "Other"
[(OTHER FG% times % of team FGA)]
in 2012/13 the result of this formula is 0.351 (0.461 times 0.762); in 2013/14 the # is 0.335
In order to raise the result of the formula from 0.335 to 0.351 we need to either raise the FG% or %of Field Goals attempted. Since the shooting results are what they are, the only true variable that could be changed is the # of Field Goals attempted by the "Other" group, which brings the % of attempts from 77.7% to 81.4% on the season. Because we can't increase the total # of Field Goals attempted, we also must reduce the % of shots taken by the "Focus" player from 22.3% to 18.6%. The result of this change would mean 61 Additional shots for the "Other" Group and 61 fewer shots for the "focus" group, roughly 2 shots per game.
Using the rate of Points/FGA for the "Other" group and multiplying it by the 61 more Field Goals they would attempt, it would mean an additional 75 points scored on the season, or roughly 3 points per game.
Consider the following ties/losses in regulation:
Manhattan (tied at regulation) VCU (tied at regulation SLU -2 GMU -2
Add 3 points to the La Salle total in each contest and there is likely a totally different vibe to this season, especially considering that some might point to the Manhattan game as one that may have had a lasting effect on the season and most certainly the VCU and SLU games had a carryover effect.
This is not to say that every loss would have been avoided, but it is interesting to see how close things really were to being wildly successful.
As the good doctor said, the difference is tiny, but it is everything.

Two interesting paragraphs from Marc Narducci's game report in the Phila. Inquirer.
" Mills had 12 points, giving him 1004. Not bad for someone known more as a defensive specialist."
Sorry Marc, Sam was recruited as one of the best all-around guards in the East Coast. ACC schools like Georgia Tech and SEC schools like Auburn were recruiting him as a scorer who could also play defense.
" Unlike last season, the high expectations for the program no longer exist, at least outside the Explorers' locker room."
Finally, let me say with regard to the GMU game that the officials were "interesting". I don't care if Joe Lindsey does five Final Fours and Mike Sanziere does a Final Four. They were horrible. I hope I never see Leslie Jones again. Fine I said it. I won't get fined or suspended by the A10 for calling out the officials by name like Phil Martooni(named Jamie Luckie) did. BTW, anyone see a reprimand or suspension for Phil by the Commissioner for his post game comments?

It is an absolute disgrace that Martelli was not publically reprimanded for singling out that ref in the post game press conference. Nice to see Phil is returning to his old obnoxious egotistical self now that the Hawks are tasting a little success.

Don't understand some comments by Joey's on A10 board bad mouthing us as if they are great. I guess the Joey's posters don't realize the disaster that awaits their team the next two seasons minimum. Joe's loses their top three rebounders, three of the top four point producers and four of the top eight players. They will be a very bad team next season (maybe 10 wins if lucky)regardless of how you slice it and they would be far better off zipping it but it is probably already to late for that. We on the other hand also lose three guards but two of those guards hardly had good seasons and the players coming in particularly Roberts and Price are bigger and better players. Replacing Duren is by far are biggest concern (Say hello to J.Schuler who had a great season with A.Stukes fighting him for time). S.Mills had a so-so season with T.Garland (around 32% from 3 point) and K.Lewis (around 25% from 3) really struggling. Price and Roberts both shot around 40% from three point area as freshman which is very good. Believe Martelli and Dunphy both will be gone after next two seasons.

Above everything I have to say that Sam Mills has really come on. He has been aggressive and not afraid to take the shot and even drive over the last 3-4 games. As I've said before, G is not a good coach. The last few games he's used the top 5 plus Peterson for almost all of the game and it was starting to work. Tonight, Wright was nowhere to found in the first half and for part of the second. I know he had two fouls but the starting unit was starting to come together, at least better than most of the season. Tonight we didn't go with the starting unit for most of the game and we were absolutely killed on the boards. So sad. I hope that if he has some good horses next year he knows what to do with them. I disagree very much. This was senior night in a game that won't mean anything to the NIT committee because the NIT committee won't even have a page on us. The game won't even affect our A10 standings or seed one bit. Naturally, he started the four seniors and gave them significant minutes. Not saying he played to lose, but there isn't only one line-up you can put out to win a game, and that's not why we lost. As I said, we lost because we didn't get to the line. Mason had a foul to give at the end of the game! That cost us time on the last play. We didn't even have the option to go to the line the whole second half while Mason did get there for some free points.

sorry I don't think that the team went into the game with the idea of it doesn't matter if we win or lose. It does matter and they did play to win.

The conference RARELY publicly reprimands people, it's their policy. I did a google search and the last A10 public reprimand I found was in 2007. I'm sure Martelli heard from the league. They just didn't tell people about it.

If we played Duq with the same execution etc. as we did our last 2 games, against Fordham and Mason they would beat us too! The team appears to have been on a quest for the bottom!
