Pay each player what he or she is worth. From that money, player then pays his tuition, books, etc. So the 8th or 9th man on a basketball team (or that 3rd of 4th string offensive lineman) gets far less than the star. See how many schools can still field competitive teams and how many althletes get their scholarships cut.
Be careful what you wish for here, fella's (and ladies.)

I'm interested in what happens because while I agree the current NCAA structure is ghastly, I reallly think the payment argument only holds up for D1 Football, mens basketball, and women's basketball at like 20 schools. At the other levels, athletes really are compensated by a free education. A volleyball player at La Salle would be much better served with a scholarship, even a partial one, than getting paid whatever the going rate would be. I fear that if all athletes are to be paid, we'll see cuts at every school that would make Temple's recent actions look minor in comparison. Think football, basketball, then whatever women's sports are needed to balance out Title IX.
Florida State football could and should, be forced to pay it's players(which they already do - I mean legally). But I don't think that should be the blanket rule. Will be interesting to see what develops.

Will be interesting to see what develops. If you are paying what the market calls for, wouldn't Title IX have to go out the window. If not, where does the money come from to support all the non revenue sports? p.s. Did anyone see the Pompous Jay Bilas and Digger Phelps debate this on Game Day? Interesting exchange. Digger pointed out how many NFL and NBA players are bankrupt after leaving the league and asked what the union did/does for them.

Title IX will not be going anywhere. Would take an act of Congress and would be political suicide to champion it's elimination.
